My name is Cleve Powell and I grew up in Arlington (67 yrs.) I'm retired
from the Corps of Engineers and did a lot of Surveying down on Key Largo for
the Nike /Hercules missile site and later for the Biscayne National
Monument.
I belong to the Old Arlington Inc. group that is preserving the history
and I'm really interested, actually excited, about finding your web site
through Roberta. I've been helping to keep your Cemetery cleaned up through
my friends. One lives on Hoffman and he mows it and another has a tree
service and he has done some cleanup. But all that aside I remember seeing
the original mansion when I was about 10 and my memory is that it was
located up on the bluff about a block south of Floral Bluff rd. The "ravine"
with the spring was just south of the house. Some people agree with me and
the map on the web site puts it there pretty much. BUT some old timers tell
me that it was down closer to Arlington rd. Can you help me on the location of the house.

I have heard from different sources as well as examined the property.
I am quite sure that the Bigelow property had its southern border at the
ravine. The northern border being Floral Bluff Rd, west-the river and east
a road known as Chaseville county road. Below are examples of documents
recently obtained
I recently came into possession of written documents and surveys that
delineate the property of the Bigelow Plantation.
The original deed was N-619, and a part was deeded to son Eugene in Trust Deed N-47 dated January 1st
1867.
Title of Paper: "Discussion of original deed N-619 & Location"
Robert Bigelow to Eugene Bigelow, Trustee for his wife Anna Frances and
her children
All that certain parcel of land containing 75a being a part of the wellknown
Park Trust, being and lying on the East side of the St. Johns River in County
of Duval, Florida. Bounded as follows: The first line begins at a post in
the margin of the St. Johns River and runs East 29.75 ch to a post, bounding
the lands of Robert Bigelow; the second line runs South 12 ch to a post; the
3rd line runs West 15 ch to a post; the 4th line runs South 20 ch to a post;
the 5th line runs West 25 ch to a post in the margin of the St Johns River;
then runs North along the margin of the river aforesaid to place of beginning:
Also a Note:
The above appears to have been the first piece cut off on the North
of the original N-619.
This was in March 15, 1869 between Eugene Bigelow to Gregor McG. Breadalbane:
"3.08 acres bounded north by lands of Mary B. Breadalbane, East by lands
unknown; South by lands of Eugene Bigelow; etc with posts and persimmon tree
on bank of St. Johns River......"
From Cleve:
Part of a 1950 US Quad sheet of Arlington that I think shows the house at
the end of a dirt road represented by dashes opposite the words Eggleston
heights and south of Floral Bluff I'll convert the chains in your legal
to feet (66'=one chain) and see how it fits
