BIGELOW Frederick Shattuck—
86, died Tuesday February 19 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in
Lebanon, NH. He was born March 16, 1915 in Concord, MA, graduating from St.
Paul's School in Concord, NH in 1934 and earning a Bachelor of Science degree
from Harvard College in 1938. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in
1942 and was commissioned in the US Army Medical Corps from 1943 to 1946.
He held an internship and was Assistant Resident in Internal Medicine
at Massachusetts General Hospital, and was Resident in Medicine at Boston
VA Hospital from 1947 to 1949. His teaching, research, and hospital practice
included positions with Harvard Medical School, the Thorndike Memorial
Laboratory at Boston City Hospital, with particular interest iri Hematologyand
Fort Devens in Ayer, ma. He served as a member of the Admissions Committee
of Harvard Medical School and was Physician to the Harvard University Health
services in Cambridge, MA until his retirement from academic and clinical
medicine in 1979. In 195O he married Beverly Horner in Milton, MA, they
raised four children in Chestnut Hill and Sudbury, MA before retiring
to Norwich, VT. Mrs. Big• low died in 1994. A great lover of the outdoors
his avocations included active family vacation trips to Nova Scotia,
Newfoundland, Alaska, Norway, British Columbia, Maine and Colorado, skiing,
tent campjng, and mountain hiking. He also immersed himself in 17th century
English history and always enjoyed keeping track of far flung family
members and friends. He was a supporter of the Norwich Public Library, served
on the boards of the Norwich senior Housing Corporation and the Norwich
Fire District, and for many years delivered meals to Upper valley residents
through the Meals-On-Wheels program. He also was a member of the Saint Barnabas
Parish in Norwich. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Lamar (Mary) Soutter
of Concord, MA. He also leaves four children -
Beverly (Bigelow) Chesnut of Palmer, AK;
Frederick Shattuck Bigelow, Jr. of Hopewell, NJ;
Mary Bryant Bigelow of Norwich; and
Nancy Horner Bigelow of Fairbanks, AK
and six grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday March
9 at 2 P.M. at St. Barnabas Church, Main St., Norwich, vt followed by
a reception in the Church Hall. Knight Funeral Home in WHITE RIVER JCT.,
VT is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions
may be made to the Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire, 46 South Main St.,
Suite 1, White River Jet., VT O5OO1.
