Obituary
Laura
Anne Biglow, age 89, of Ashland, Wisconsin, died on Friday,
December 11, 2009, at the Ashland Health & Rehabilitation Center,
in Ashland.
Laura Anne was born, on October 15, 1920, in
Ashland, the daughter and eldest of the five children of Crague C. and
Mildred M. (Byrne) Biglow. A brilliant student, she graduated from
Ashland High School at age 16, in the class of 1936. She then attended
the College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, earning her B.S.
degree in medical records and graduated in 1940. Following a year as
Medical Librarian in Rapid City, South Dakota, she enlisted in the
W.A.V.E.S., serving the war years at the naval hospital in San Diego,
California. After serving her country she attended Northwestern
University in Chicago, Ilinois, and graduated with a master’s degree in
public health in 1947. She served as head of records at the Staten
Island Naval Hospital, New York, New York, and retired from the P.H.S.
with the rank of Lt. Commander. Not wanting to slow down after
retirement, Laura Anne became director of education for the National
Association of Medical Record Librarians in Chicago, Illinois. In this
position, she established baccalaureate programs in universities,
colleges and junior colleges throughout the United States and its
territories. She also oversaw the curriculum for the correspondence
courses established through the Association. Upon her retirement for
the second time in 1986, she was awarded the honor of being selected as
the employee of the year by her colleagues in the National Association
of Medical Record Librarians. The award was presented to her in Boston,
Massachusetts, and attended by her family. Laura Anne loved her family
home and hosted the much looked forward to Fourth of July family
picnics each year for her extended family. She was very active and past
president of the Monday Club and she served as a member of the Ashland
Parks Committee. She was a minister of the Eucharist at Our Lady of the
Lake Catholic Church in Ashland.
Survivors include: her sister, Barbara B.
Quinlan, and her husband, Russell, of Meriden, Connecticut; her cousin,
William Biglow, and his wife, Hazel, of Ashland; and numerous nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her
brother, Col. Robert R. Biglow, and his wife, Genevieve; her sister,
Mary Brownell, and her husband, James F.; her sister, Patricia Stevens,
and her husband, H. Donald.
A visitation, for family and friends, will be
held at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland, beginning
at 10 a.m., Wednesday, continuing until the hour of service.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11
a.m., Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at the Our Lady of the Lake
Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Paul Pare’, O.F.M. will be the
celebrant.
Interment will take place in the Mount Hope
Cemetery, in Ashland.
Memorials are preferred and may be directed to
the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and School in Ashland.
Our Ashland Chapel will be assisting Laura
Anne’s family with her memorialization.
