This portrait of J. W. Bigelow appears
on page 78 of The Canadian Horticulturist, vol.XVII, no.3, 1894. J. W. Bigelow
was born in Canso, Guysborough Co. in N.S., Canada in 1833. He lived there
until 1869. He ran a shipping business in Canso for many years. In 1869 he
moved to a farm outside of Wolfville, King's Co. He was involved in horticulture
and fruit science and had an orchard of his own. "The photos of my great,
great grandfather. His orchard you mentioned was inherited by his son-in-law,
David Graham Whidden, my great grandfather".... Howard Whidden.

8 BIGELOW, son of William Johnston 7 ( Daniel 6 , Amasa 5 , Isaac 4, Isaac 3, Samuel 2, John1) and Sara
(WHITMAN) BIGELOW, was born at Cape Canso, NS on 02 October 1834 and
on 20 October 1857 married Sarah Ann Payzant who was daughter of James and
Lois (Nichols) Payzant. She was born on 21 February 1833 at Wolfville,
NS. James and Sarah resided in Wolfville and James died there 21 June
1917 and Sarah's death date is unknown.

twice: (1) (21?) 04 Nov 1894 Annie A. Bishop (b 30 Nov 1862; d 31
Dec 1906) m at New Minas Baptist Church, she was the dau of Edward L. and
Sophina ( ) Bishop; m (2) _ ? date Gertrude Publicover (1858-1912);
no children from either marriage. Resided Northwest Canada in 1888.
Kings Co. Hist. Soc. shows James Payzant Bigelow as being born 13 Aug 1858.
James Payzant Bigelow worked in the Northwest Territories; also listed as
a farmer in NS. (Kings Co. Hist. Soc. 2/22/1997 NS.)
