From: Ken Mutch mutch@slingshot.co.nz
From the records in the "web" it would seem that John 7 Bigelow (father
of John Smith 8 Bigelow) died 22/11/1885 and was buried in Palmerston
NS - however,
here is transcript from a grave in Auckland New Zealand also noted
is a newspaper report 5/8/1893 states John Bigelow died 4/8/1893 and buried
6/8/1893. So - are we in NZ looking at a different John
Bigelow or who is the one buried in NS?
Love a mystery.
Cheers Ken
Cemetery Records - Symonds Street, Auckland, New Zealand.

of Mary Bigelow who fell asleep in Jesus at Ponsonby October 31st 1883
aged 60 years,
secure from every mortal care by sin and sorrow vexed no more eternal
happiness they share who are not lost but gone before, also John Bigelow
aged 72 years,
in thy presence is fulness of joy." The New Zealand Herald of 5\8\1893
has John Bigelow died 4 August 1893 aged 72 years and buried 6 August
1893 from the
Union Free Church at Symonds Street Cemetery.
Subjects Bigelow, Mary, d.1883; Bigelow, John, d.1893
More from Ken:
1. 1592C.23t John 7 Bigelow. On the "web" he married (2) Mary Ann Calkins(Rockwell?). It has been a tradition in NZ to have "Rockwell" included in
many names in the Bigelow families. Has the name Rockwell been confirmed?
2. 1592C.231 John Smith 8 Bigelow. Born 1851 in Nova Scotia son of John 7
Bigelow above. Can you advise how I can get a copy of his birth certificate.

years ago about our family history. This year is the 100th
anniversary of my mother’s birth and I am compiling information
for a centenary life of her.Looking at the website
you maintain, I need to add further children of John Smith (8) Bigelow-28870.
You already have:

I hope I have them in the right

Dear Rod
On browsing the net, I came across the Bigelow
Family Tree and was most interested to discover that I have
relations all over the world that I have never even
heard of, let alone met. Allow me to introduce myself,
my name is Leonette Hathorn (nee van der Walt). Born in Sydney,
Australia on 26 July 1947 daughter of Violet Agnes Ruby Quinn and
Rudolph Stephanus van der Walt...but I am leaping ahead!
I have managed to ascertain via numerous sources
that I am a direct descendent of Amasa Bigelow born 11
February 1755 in Colchester, Connecticut. He being
the son of Isaac Bigelow and Abigail Skinner and great great grandson
of John Biglo. My great grandfather was James Amasa Bigelow
born 19 April 1852 in Pugwash, Nova Scotia who married Agnes Elizabeth
French in Auckland, New Zealand on 22 July 1875, my grandmother
was Cora Malvena Bigelow one of nine children born to them.
Cora Malvena married John Quinn and this is where I come unstuck as
unfortunately I do not have dates of marriage between my grandparents.
My mother Violet Agnes Ruby Quinn born 17 November 1908, is one of
four children (and still alive). I have some sketchy information
on the Bigelow genealogy but there are so many - where does one start.
Thanks to the internet some of the pieces of puzzle have been found.
I would appreciate information on the prospect of joining the Bigelow
Society once my heritage is ascertained and look forward to hearing
from you by return.
Yours sincerely
Leonette Hathorn

Hi, My name is Christine Morris from Australia ... further to my previous
Email.
I cannot get any further info from your data past James Amasa Bigelow
m Agnes French in Auckland NZ.
My Grandfather Henry Louis Bigelow (born 1888) was the son of Amasa (James)
and Agnes. 6th of 9 children.
Ernest, Amasa, Cora, Cliff, Charles, Henry, Agnes, Cyril and Lillah.
My Mother believes Amasa and Agnes both died in Sydney NSW. To my Knowledge
2 of Lillah's daughters are also still living in Sydney as is my Mother
Marjorie.
My Mother is one of 6 children born to Henry and Ellen (nee Hannah).
We have become quite a large branch of the family. My Mother had been
in contact with one of her cousins who was Madeline Quinn (nee Bigelow) and
has detail of her children.
I'm sure we could furnish you with added details which could be added
to the Web Site.
Regards
Christine.

We have a painting of the "Welcome" which was built in 1904 - the last ship built by the Bigelow yard in St Mary's Bay - shipwrecked at Whakatane in 1914 as I understand it.
The GEORGE HEBNDERSON was wrecked about a kilometre from where we now live in New Plymouth.

I have just received a message from UK stating the following:
George Eaton captained a ship call GEORGE HENDERSON which sailed from Pugwash,
NS, 4th December 1859 arriving Sydney, Australia 26th February 1860. Eaton
later settled in New Zealand. It would appear that the Bigelow's were
passengers on this ship.
It is believed that there was a Kathleen Bigelow onboard.
I found that John Smith Bigelow (our connection) travelled from Melbourne to
Sydney onboard the ADELAIDE 7th Feb 1871 as a passenger.
Further the schooner WELCOME arrived Ex Sydney 9th October 1882, info NZ
Herald 9/10/1882. At our house we have a minature life ring with the words S
WELCOME painted on it and a photo of a understood to be Grandmother (Anne [Goodall]
Brown) - Mother (Mary Anne [Brown] Bigelow) and child (Daisy Winifred [Bigelow] Dreadon).
Family Eaton were also passengers. There are connections between the NZ Bigelow's and Eaton's
but I am still looking. There are several Eaton connections in USA and Canada.
Note: Further info on this would be appreciated.
