Under  John (9)  1848-1931- is my great grandmother   Minerva Bigelow Swain (1876-1941)---I think there is a sibling missing-understandable since John married 3 sisters!
I think there was a  David Bigelow- Minerva's brother David paid for my grandmother Ella Swain to go to Ferris State, MI for 2 years--  circa 1924. David would have been in Bear Lake MI  area- since  Leo Swain lived at his Summers House for a while after 41

Pat Bigelow, founder of the Bigelow Society and did much of the research that became Vol. I and Vol. II of Bigelow Society.  She was the first contact this genealogist had to become a member in 1976.  She passed away before I had a chance to meet her although I corresponded with her after that until her death. She was a remarkable lady.  She also descended from John (1) Rin 2944 the immigrant.  She was visiting in Columbus, Ohio and died at Riverside hospital. Pat grew up on the family's farm in Webster Twp., attending a one-room, 1-8 grade school.  She attended and graduated from University of Michigan High School and subsequently attended the University of Michigan as an undergraduate.  She transferred to the University of Alaska, then located in College, Alaska.  She was 1st teacher at newly opened Eielson Air Force Base, 20 mi. or so outside of Fairbanks.  The base education officer, "Ed". Bigelow, of Grand Rapids, Michigan found her very special.  They married October 1, 1949 in Fairbanks.  After the birth of their daughter, Kathryn "Kit," the new parents returned to Michigan so Ed could learn printing at Ferris Institute in Big Rapids.  Again, Pat taught- in a one-room school.  After Ed's graduation, they returned to Alaska where Ed worked on the weekly paper in cordova, Alaska and daughter Sylvia was born in 1952.  By then, Ed was diagnosed with ileitis. They worked in California at Lakeport and Ukiah, eventually settling in Plainwell, Michigan en route to the VA hospital in Michigan.  In 1954 Pat contracted bulbar polio which was to have long-lasting impact.  She was hospitalized many months, a quadriplegic.  Ed suffered more and more from ileitis but continued working as a printer.  Despite the hardships, Pat devoted herself to the education and life learning of the girls, often taking on many other children to tutor.  Books and music filled each of Ed and Pat's homes over the years.  They shared keen interests in history and settlement of the U.S. and it is not surprising that together they formed the Bigelow Society while living in Jonesville, Michigan after Ed's early retirement from disability.  Pat focused on the tracing of genealogies and writing many articles which formed the basis of the quarterly Forge publications.  In early years, their production tools were mimeograph, stapled and imaginations, but together they helped ignite and foster many other people's interest in their family history and genealogy.  In 1976 Ed and Pat moved to Fairbanks, Alaska to make their home with daughter Kit and family.  In 1984 Ed preceded Pat in death.  Pat immersed herself even more in genealogy and publication of her first book as well as family matters.  In June 1987, Pat took on a remarkable journey, with daughter Kit, ten year old grandson Alex, and a 19 year old college student, traveling from Fairbanks, Alaska to a new home in the Cleveland area.  Pat was thrilled to be able to attend the 1988 Bigelow Family Reunion at Hiram College in Ohio.  Pat's interests in family and history led to a trip to Columbus, Ohio on April 30, 1989 in order to visit with a niece and see a museum exhibit.  She died unexpectedly in Columbus on May 7th of heart complications following a week's hospitalization.  She left two daughters, Kathryn (Mrs. Timothy Jensen of South Euclid, Ohio) and Sylvia, (Mrs. Joseph Wallace of Dexter, MI)  Three grandchildren, Alexander Jensen and Jessamyn and Thomas Wallace; and one sister, Amy M. Fee of Dexter, MI.  She was cremated and memorial services were held in South Euclid on May 13 1989.  Interment was with her husband at Bear Lake, MI.  SEE FORGE, January 1997, Vol. 26, #1 "Tribute to Pat Bigelow 1924-1989" with her picture on page 7.  Laurel (Bigelow) Barklow was the other founding member of the Bigelow Society.
