<>     Well, I guess we’re cousins.  My name is Sam Whitesel, I’m just shy of 65 years old.  I grew up in Petersburg, PA in the home of my grandparents, Plummer and Edith (Bigelow) Piper.  I knew the Bigelow’s well and visited often with many as a child.  Edith was the oldest child of David Young and Martha Matilda “Tilly” Orner Bigelow. We called them Mum and Pup.  I have tools from David and some of the household furnishings that he built.   David died when I was very little but we visited Mum regularly until her death when I was about 8.  I still see the house they lived in when I am in Huntingdon, where they last lived.  I knew Edith’s brothers and sisters since they stopped in whenever they were around to see their oldest sibling and I remember the anguish in our home when uncle Walter and Aunt Catherine’s son and family were killed in the van/train collision.
Thank you for doing family research.

I am working on Ancestry.com.  I still need  to add my grandfather's siblings.  Two of them are still alive.  I am attaching a photo of David
Bigelow's family.  Grandma Ruth is standing directly behind her father. Mabel is on her right and Edith is on her left.  Peg is one of the twins seated.   I think the other twin is Mary and I' not sure who is who in the sons.  The other picture is Grandma Ruth and Aunt Edith.  Brenda  (listed under Stayrook family tree)
Ruth May Bigelow Henderson was my great-grandmother.  I was 8 years old when she died but I remember her well.  My grandfather was Robert Clark Henderson and my mother was Caroline Ruth Henderson Stayrook.  I also knew Mabel well and have memories of Aunt Edith and Aunt Peg (she lived in Chicago but visited a couple of times when I was a kid).  If you want info on my line of ancesters, let me know.  I am putting my tree together and your site was helpful for verifying information I had.  Thanks.  Brenda

Have you ever heard of Israel I. Bigelow, who lived  in McAlevy's Fort, Penna., in 1859?  He was my great grandfather, and I can't locate him ANYWHERE!  (Great grandmother was Mary Young Bigelow.)  Thanks for ANY help!!!
These Bigelows - my forebears, lived in the Huntingdon area of Penna.,- McAlevy's Fort, Bald Eagle Valley, all in the
same area. My grandfather was David Young Bigelow, born Oct. 30 or 31, 1859, in McAlevy's Fort. My father was David William Bigelow, born Sept. 16, 1901, in the Huntingdon area. My name is Doris Bigelow Scheidemantle, and I live in
NY. I would dearly love to learn more of this of this line.  In the Spring we hope to stay a few days in that area and investigate. I was born and raised in Altoona, Penna..  I am hoping to find some kind of lead at Historical Societies, etc. Will let you know if and when I ever find out!!! (Incidentally, my grandfather, David Y. Bigelow, was married to my grandmother, Martha Matilda Orner, from the same area.)   Thanks for any help!!  With a name like Israel I. Bigelow, ggf MUST have been related to others of the same name!!!
That's the one!!!  My grandfather's obit says his father was Israel I., but this is definitely the one, because the Mary Young is correct, the brothers and sisters are correct, and the Oct. 1859 date of birth is correct. (I just reread the obit and the dates for my grandparents are Oct. 7th and 8th, respectively>)  I am so excited  I can scarcely sit still.  THANK YOU so very much!!!  Now I have something substantial to go on!!!  Will stay in touch. And thanks again.  Your help is much appreciated!!!

Hi Rod.  I wonder if you could help.    I have seen an obituary for Mrs. Israel Bigelow  (this would be Mary A. Young), and the date of the newspaper was 2/2/1889.  It stated that she was 70.  We all know how newspapers can get things wrong, but the date on the paper is 1889.   The dates given for her on Israel's page in the Bigelow Society are 1832-1899.   Is there any way we can find out for sure?   I have searched all over and cannot find anything more about her.   (I know this is the same lady because her survivors are my grandfather and his siblings, and the place of burial is correct.) Do you have any suggestions?    Thanks much for your help.Finding her has been a real challenge!            Doris

Hi.  I am wondering how many of our Bigelow clan sport a nice
dimple in the chin?   My grandfather had one, my father and five of his
eight siblings had one, and I have one.  Is this a Bigelow trait?     My
greatgrandfather was Israel M. Bigelow, married to Mary Young.  My grandfather was
David Young Bigelow, married to Martha Matilda Orner.   I am curious to
know if there are other Bigelows with this delightful chin feature.
Thanks.

# 1.........5 Die in Tragedy
Huntingdon Native is Killed

A Huntingdon native, the Rev. Edwin Lewis Bigelow, 39, of Grand Forks, ND, was one of the five persons
killed in a bus-train accident in Grand Forks on Sunday.
The minister's wife and daughter Pamela 7, were killed in the same tragedy which also snuffed out the life of the
Episcopal Church bishop of Fargo, ND.
Three children, including the Bigelows' five year-old son Chris, were hospitalized with injuries after the crash, which occurred at an unmarked grade crossing at Highway 2 and the Northern Pacific Railroad tracks at the west ridge of Grand Forks.
The Rev. Mr. Bigelow was born in Huntingdon in 1925, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter I. Bigelow, now of 2612 Beale Avenue, Altoona. The father worked as a salesman for Reeves Parvin Company at Huntingdon until 1943 when the family moved to Altoona.
The dead minister was graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1942. His family is widely known here and the dead man has five aunts in the Huntingdon area: Miss Mary Bigelow, Huntingdon; Mrs. Plummer Piper, Petersburg; Mrs. Wade Snyder, Mount Union, R. D?; and  Mrs. Ruth Henderson and Miss Mabel Bigelow of Alexandria. A sister of the dead man, Mrs. Eleanor Zimbler, lives in State College.
In addition to the Rev. Mr. Bigelow, his wife and daughter, the other victims of the fatality were; the Right Rev. Richard Emery, 53, Episcopal bishop of Fargo, and Sherrell Simons, 18, Mandan, ND, a student at the University of North Dakota.

#2.............Bigelows are interred in Arlington
A Huntingdon native, the Rev. Edwin L. Bigelow, his wife, Phyllis, and their daughter Pamela 7, of Grand Forks, ND,
were buried last Thursday in Arlington National Cemetery.
Mr. Bigelow, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bigelow of Altoona, formerly of Huntingdon, was killed when a train hit the Volkswagon church bus he was driving at a grade crossing in Grand Forks on Sunday Feb 23.
In addition to the minister, his wife , and his daughter, another clergyman and another youngster were killed. This makes the death toll five in the tragic accident.
A veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, Mr. Bigelow, 39, was chaplain at the Episcopal Student Center of the University of North Dakota.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two children; Lindsay 10, and Christopher 5, who was injured in the accident which took the lives of his parents.
