VERA BIGELOW   " MY GRANDMA"

Vera was born the fifth child of ten of Catherine and William Bates in Lousana, Alberta on September 7,1910. She passed away in the Red Deer Hospital January 10, 2002 at the age of 91.
Vera attended school in Lousana   She often mentioned many of her experiences traveling by horse drawn school bus to and from school. It seemed that all winter they left for school in the dark and it was dark when they returned home, leaving no time for play. She talked about the terrible snow storm.   It was snowing very hard and the wind was blowing causing big drifts. The students had to get out and walk in front of the horses to lead them through the snow drifts.   After she finished school, she worked as a mother's helper for various people. This is when she met Owen Bigelow.
Vera and Owen were married October 12,1933 in Didsbury, Alberta. They moved to Lac La Biche River in January of the next year. They were many miles from the town of Lac La Biche where they had to go to get supplies. In the winter travel was done across the lake. On one of those trips the horse that was pulling the toboggan started jumping around, broke the ice and fell in almost pulling in the toboggan with Vera on it   Fortunately Owen was able to keep the toboggan out of the water. Vera had to roll out onto safer ice. She said she had a hard time rolling across the ice as she was very pregnant with their first child, Cecelia. They then had to walk some miles for help.   While Vera and Owen lived in the Lac La Biche River area Cecelia and Myrtle were born.   Later they moved to a place north east of Plamondon where they farmed and raised cattle. There Phyllis and Marvin were added to their family. The Plamondon area was a very friendly community where much fun was had through the hardships and many good and lasting friendships were made that are still on going today. Vera and Owen spent about 15 years in the Plamondon area after which they moved back to the Wimborne and Huxley districts, eventually moving to the original Bigelow homestead.  There they continued to farm and raise cattle until they retired to Red Deer in 1970.
Vera and Owen were fortunate to be able to travel a fair amount. Their first major trip was in the spring of 1969. They, along with Ida and Albert Smith and Sister Beatrice, drove across Canada to Nova Scotia, where Owen's father was raised. They met with many "Bigelow cousins". They went to Hawaii and visited with Uncle Sam and Aunt Betty Bigelow, to Mexico then to the East Coast again. They enjoyed camping and fishing with family and friends. While at home they enjoyed the activities of the Golden Circle in Red Deer, bowling, quilting, singing, playing cards, and dancing.
Vera enjoyed her family, especially the young ones. She looked forward every year to the annual Bates and Bigelow family reunions. She also enjoyed all kinds of roses although she never seemed to have much luck growing them. She was an avid housekeeper and gardener. She would play a game of crib any time of the day and most likely she would win.
Vera and Owen celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on October 12, 1993, three days before Owen passed away. Vera then moved to Waskasoo Towers in Red Deer, where she lived for 6 years before moving to the Pines Lodge, where she lived until her passing.
Vera is survived by three daughters and one son; Cecelia (Ron) Myers, Kelowna B.C., Myrtle (Jack) Werbicki, Sherwood Park A.B., Phyllis (Gary) McKay, Calgary, A.B. and Marvin (Diana) Bigelow, Elnora. A.B.; 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters; Nellie Coram, Red Deer, A.B., Blanche Downs, Snohomish, Washington, Annie Clifford, Innisfail, A.B., and Grace Kee, Calgary, A.B., three brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews and friends. Vera was predeceased by her husband, Owen and two grandsons.
