Forge article:
William Perry Bigelow [15131.642] moved from Athol, Massachusetts with his family to Nora Springs, Iowa in the year of 1882. His reasons for moving west were given in the memoirs of his son, William Arthur Bigelow:
During the '70's much of the farm land in Iowa was in the hands of speculators. Then came years of wheat failure and grasshopper plague. As the few families began to arrive in the late '70's, they wanted to build schoolhouses and some roads. And so this move brought on what was known as non-residence 'Tax War.' The speculators refused to pay the taxes, so large amounts of farm land could be bought by anyone who would pay the dues and take a tax title. Now this was the time that the real estate men got busy and sent literature all over the U.S.
Some of my father's friends came 'way out' to Iowa, bought land, came back to Mass., 'settled up,' and went to live in Iowa. Soon, my dad did that same thing. Iowa has been a fast growing state. I saw good Iowa farm land sold for $6 to $10 per acre, then lived to see the same land (with improvements) sell for $300 per acre.
As for myself, I have never regretted the move to Iowa in 1882. The social condition at that time was raw, the winters were long and cold, and it was hard to get around in winter.
