PETERS, Gerald Fullerton
Bedford, passed away May 3, 2009, in Dartmouth General Hospital at the age
of 93. Born in Lower Onslow March 14, 1916, he was a son of Bruce and Blanche
(Bigelow) Peters. He was a welder by trade and was involved in the repairing
of both naval and merchant vessels at the Halifax Shipyards during the Second
World War. Later on he had a long career in the construction industry working
for Construction Equipment, Sagadore Cranes and Purdy Brothers in Halifax.
He had a passion for boating and the sea, captaining first the Wasp, followed
by the Sam & Judy and finally the Fundy Tide over a 50 year period. After
moving to Bedford in 1952, he joined the Armdale Yacht Club, where he was
a charter member up until the time of his passing. He served as the Fleet
Captain at the club on several occasions and regularly shared in club cruises
with his family and friends to places such as the Bras D'Or Lakes, and along
the south shore of Nova Scotia spending many summers with family and fellow
sailors at a quiet marina in Back Harbour, Chester. He is survived by his
wife of 69 years, Katherine (Spence), Bedford; daughters, Margie Gillam,
Halifax; Donna (Andrew) Anderson, Halifax; Helen Archibald, Waverley; sons,
Rick (Tammy), Dartmouth; Fred (Janet), New Glasgow; special daughter and
caregiver, Sharmon (Rick) Petrie, Lakeview; sisters, Eva (Frank) Nowlan,
Bridgewater; Florence Montriat, Victoria, B. C.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter, Patricia;
granddaughter, Angela Burke and son-in-law, Allan Archibald; brothers, Roy,
Carl, Earl; sisters, Helen, Grace, Marian. Memorial services to take place
Wednesday, May 6, at 11 a.m. in Bedford United Church in Bedford, Rev. Diane
Tingley officiating, reception to follow in the church hall. Family flowers
only. Donations can be made to the Autism Care Center of the South Shore
c/o Bridgewater Senior/Junior High, 100 York Street, Bridgewater, NS B4V
