# 15197. Joel ⁵ BIGELOW son of Jotham ⁴( John ³ , Samuel ², John ¹) BIGELOW and his second wife Mary RICHARDSON, was born 20 June 1752 at Holden, Worcester County, MA. About 1773 he married Sarah STOWELL of Petersham (b at Nichewaug, MA), daughter of John and Sarah (PARMENTER) STOWELL. As his father had early removed to Gilford, Windham County, VT. Joel settled there, where he owned a large farm in the center of town, and where their children were born.
Joel was active in the Militia, and served in the Revolution, having the rank of Colonel. During the Guilford Incident between New York and Vermont concerning the jurisdiction over the Southern Vermont , he and his father took sides with New York. He was elected a member of the Assembly in 1784 from Cumberland County, as it was then called. He was also commissioned an Adjutant by the State of New York about that time. His wife Sarah, born circa 1750, died in Guilford circa 1821. Soon after, Joel moved to Ellisburg, NY to live with his son Jotham. He died there 14 October 1825.

15197.1 John, b 7 Nov 1774 Guilford, Windham Co., VT; m 9 Mar 1797 Rebecca GROW and had 1 son. He went west about 1800 and was never heard from again. After a few years his wife married again 24 Dec 1835 Hubbard RANDALL.

15197.2 Sally, b 20 Feb 1776; d _____ NY; m 07 Mar 1798 Joseph Willard. (see below)

15197.4 Joel, b 8 Mar 1780, allegedly went to Montreal, Que., and was a merchant there, but no evidence has been found.

15197.6 Jotham, b 28 Jan 1784; d 16 Aug 1860 Ellisburg, Jefferson co, NY;m (1) 1 Jan 1811 Celinda Bullock; (2) 25 Sep 1824 Nancy Nichols. 7 children.

15197.7 Richardson, b 5 Oct 1785; d 25 Jan 1812 Guilford, VT; m 27 May 1802 Sarah (Chandler) Hall. 1 daughter.

15197.A Tirzah b 7 July 1792; d ____ Watertown, NY; m, date unknown, Ambrose Hunt of Ellisburg, NY. No issue.

!Addenda: Cemetery inscription at Ellisburg show that wife Celinda was born Dec 1799, and died 22 Apr 1824.
Nancy, second wife, was born 24 May 1786, died 6 Sept 1866.(This is what the addenda states but these are wives of Jotham ⁶ [15197.6].
States for Joel #15197 p. 109, he m-1 Celinda 1799-1824 and m-2 Nancy 1786-1822. If so, evidently, Sarah Stowell was wife #3?

Sally 1776 who married Joseph Willard is my ggggrandmother. Lovell married my gggrandaunt.

OBITUARY - BELLEVILLE INTELIGENCER
With much regret we record the death of Mrs. Terzah Farnham, widow of the late Timothy Farnham, who was for many years County Superintendent of Gravel Roads, who predeceased her several years ago. Mrs. Farnham and her husband were both natives of the United Sates, she being a daughter of Sheriff Willard, of Oswego County, New York. Mr. and Mrs. Farnham came to Canada in early life and for many years resided in Canifton, but of late years Mrs. Farnham had lived in Belleville at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Farley. The deceased, who attained the good old age of 82 years, was a lady of wide christian sympathies, and was widely known and highly esteemed. She is survivied by the following family : Mrs. Mattie Farley, Belleville; Messrs. Timothy and Frank Farnham, Canifton : Henry on the farm in Thurlow, and William of Bancroft.

Mrs. Terzah Farnham, Relict of the Late Timothy Farnham, Called Home This Morning.
Death's messenger, who has been busy of late, laid his hand this morning upon Mrs. Terzah Farnham, relict of the late Timothy Farnham. She had been ailing only a few days, but owing to her advanced age, death was not unexpected. She was the daughter of the late Marvin Willard and was born in New York State 82 yeas ago. She was married there to her late husband and they came to reside in Canada about fifty years ago, making their home in Canifton. Mr. Farnham kept the toolgate at Canifton and was for many years the efficient superintendent of county gravel roads, being succeeded by Mr. Bleecker.
The late Mrs. Farnham is survived by four sons and one daughter, Frank, Timothy and Henry of Canifton, William of Bancroft and Mrs. Mattie Farley of Belleville.
The late Mrs. Farnham was widely known and highly esteemed for her many good qualities. Kind, charitable and of a strong Christian spirit she will long be missed by an unusually wide circle of friends.

Hello, I'm looking for info on: JOEL BIGELOW, (son of JOTHAM & MARY (RICHARDSON) BIGELOW was born 20 June 1752 at Holden, Worcester County, MA. (or) his son Jotham: Jotham 6 BIGELOW, son of Joel 5 ( Jotham 4, John 3,Samuel 2, John 1) and Sarah (STOWELL ) BIGELOW, was
born at Guilford, Windham county, VT, 28 January 1784. He married (1) 01 January 1811 Celinda Bullock of Guilford. After her death, he married (2) 25 September 1824 Nancy Nichols. They moved from Guilford to Ellisburg, Jefferson County, NY, where he was prominent in local affairs, and served in the State Assembly 1837. He was a Supervisor at Ellisburg 1831-1836 and died 16 August 1860
(or) his other son William M. (I dont know much about him). William is my 3x great-grandfather and I am guessing that he came to Ellisburg from VT to work for his brother Jotham.
Joel was also a Col. in the militia during the Revolutionary War but thats as much as I know about that.
I plan on vacationing in Guilford, VT next Sept to see what I can dig up (not literally) on my ancestors who came from there.
Any help on any of these men would be greatly appreciated.
