Letter from
grandson Russell T. Bigelow:
21 July 2008
While I have never made it to one of the Reunions,
one of my cousins, Elizabeth Bigelow Warren has. She also visited Australia
several years ago where our grandfather was born. He is listed in Volume
2, page 484, as a son of Leander Lowell Bigelow (8), who would be my Great
Grandfather. The information provided on page 484 apparently came from
my cousin's visit to Australia as she provided the same documents and info
to me. My grandfather, listed as William George Shehan 16251.3724 actually
went by William Ralph Bigelow after arriving in Trinity county, CA.
He married my grandmother on October 24, 1888. Per the local newspaper
notice, he was listed as William R. Bigelow. My father, 3rd oldest child
and 2nd son was named William Ralph Bigelow, Jr. My grandmother listed
my grandfather as William Ralph Bigelow on the affidavit of birth for my
father. Obviously the George and Shehan came down from the family (his
grandfather was George and his mother was Shehan). I do not see or
have found where Ralph came from. No one knows why my grandfather came
to California as there were no known friends already here and no relatives.
Even my older cousin Elizabeth (goes by Betsy in the family) who lived with
my grandmother until getting married did not know.
In connection with your work on Volumne 3, which I
presume will cover the generation of the children of William George Shehan
(9) I do not know if the information previously furnished by my cousin includes
that generation-her father was my father's older brother. I know that she
attended at least one Bigelow reunion and was the one who obtained information
in Australia. As I understand it, Leander Lowell Bigelow (8) went to
Australia from Maine, USA after some cousins. Some of the latter if
not all stayed there while he came back to Maine in 1868-1870 period.
I recently answered an inquiry from one of the Australia
relatives asking for information from any descendent of Leander Lowell Bigelow
which was in an earlier issue of FORGE. He responded back to my reply
in August 2006. Was going to accumulate more information as he could and
forward it on but I have heard nothing more. Since his query was in
the FORGE OF October 2005, he probably has already furnished the Society with
the same information that I received.
I would be happy to provide more information that
you may need for our branch of the Bigelow Society to the extent that I
have it; As I said previously, I expect my cousin may have provided it all
as when I first retired, I started to categorize my inheireted records and
articles since my older brother had no interest and my cousin sent me the
geneology form to complete for our immediate family.
