OTIS M. BIGELOW, LONG BANKER HERE, DIED THIS MORNING
Otis M. Bigelow, retired Baldwinsville banker and famous
collector of Indian and colonial relics, one of the village's
most beloved citizens, died at his home, 63 Oswego street, at 2
o'clock this (Thursday) morning. He was 90 years old. Funeral
services will be held from his home on Saturday.
With the exception of his years spent
at Yale university and a short period spent at a private bank in
Washington, D. C., Mr. Bigelow was a life-long resident of
Baldwinsville. He was one of a family of 11 children.A direct
descendant of one of Baldwinsville's pioneer families, his
grandfather having settled here in 1812,
Otis M. Bigelow was born on February
19, 1849 at the Battery farm, the son of Col. Payne and Hannah
Munro Bigelow. He attended Baldwinsville schools and prepared to
entrance to Yale by attending Homer academy and attending a
classical school in Syracuse for study of Latin and Greek. He
was graduated from Yale university with class of 1872.
Mr. Bigelow went to work in the First
National bank in Baldwinsville in 1873 when James Frazee was
president and Fred Morris was cashier.
When the Baldwinsville State bank was
formed in 1875, Mr. Bigelow became a part of that institution
assistant cashier and office boy. In 1893, when his father, Col.
Payne Bigelow, died, Mr. Bigelow became president, a position he
held for 36 years until January 14, 1931, when he retired.
During his years in the local bank, Mr.
Bigelow became famous for his collections. One of the finest
collections of Indian relics in the United States is that of the
Iroquois races which he presented to the State Education
department at Albany. He made this collection from around
Baldwinsville.
He also made a collection of beaded
bags. He also owned a remarkable collection of colonial relics,
such as early cooking utensils, spinning wheels, etc.
Mr. Bigelow and Miss Lillian Swetland were married on May 12,
1880.
He was a former president of the
Baldwinsville board of education and for several years served as
treasurer of the village of Baldwinsville.
For many years, Mr. Bigelow served as director of both the
Baldwinsville State bank and the First National bank. He became
a director of the First National bank of May 24, 1898 and served
until January, 1931.
Mr. Bigelow was a member of Seneca
River lodge, No. 160, F. & A. M. He was also a member of the
Yale club of Syracuse.
Survivors include two sisters,
Mrs. Louise B. Owen of Baldwinsville and Mrs. Frank Smilie of
San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. J. Connell of
Baldwinsville and Mrs. Robert W. Keyes of Utica; two sons, Mayor
Wallace Bigelow of Baldwinsville, and Payn Bigelow of Syracuse;
and nine grandchildren.
Private funeral services will be held
from his home late Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock, the Rev.
Phillip B. Cooley and the Rev. Frederick W. Fuess, pastor and
pastor emeritus, respectively , of the Presbyterian church,
officiating.
