Mayor Wallace Bigelow Died Early This Morning
Wallace Bigelow, mayor of Baldwinsville, died at his home, 12 West Oneida street at 5:45 o'clock this (Thursday) morning. He was 48 years old.
The abruptness of his death came as a shock to his family and the entire community.
He was taken ill Monday as he drove to his business in Syracuse. He delivered his daughter, Nancy Bigelow, at school, the Central City Business institute, and, although ill, drove his car home where he had remained since.
He complained of acute indigestion. His death, however, was due to a heart attack. He was taken seriously ill last night and had medical attendance through the entire night.
Mayor Bigelow would have been 49 in one more week. He was born in Baldwinsville October 13, 1890, the son of Otis Munro and Lillian Swetland Bigelow.
He received his preliminary education in the Baldwinsville schools and prepared for college entrance at the Kingsley school, Essex Falls, New Jersey, from which he was graduated.
Mayor Bigelow was graduated from Sheffield Scientific school, Yale university, in June 1913, with the degree of civil engineer.
Following his graduation, he was employed by the Public Service commission in New York City, at which post he remained for approximately two years.
On October 7, 1914, he was united in marriage with Miss Gladys Miller of Baldwinsville.
For approximately two years, he was employed by the Troy trailers in business in Washington, D. C.
With America's entrance into the World war, he enlisted in the Motor Transport corps of the United States army, and was place on duty at Camp Jackson, Florida, for the duration of the war.
Following his army service, he returned to Baldwinsville and entered the Miller Equipment company, Syracuse, dealers in all kinds of construction equipment. He later formed a partnership with James Miller in conducting that business.
Mr. Bigelow first became associated with village government when he served as village trustee in the late 1920s during the administration of the late Ernest N. Dristle as mayor. Singularly enough, upon Mayor Dristle's death, Trustee Frank Root became acting mayor. Today, Trustee Root, upon Mayor Bigelow's death, again became acting mayor.
Mayor Bigelow's death follows that of his father by only a few months. Otis M. Bigelow, long president of the Baldwinsville State bank, died on June 29 at the age of 90.
Mr. Bigelow was elected mayor of Baldwinsville in a spirited contest with Raymond L. Madden at the annual village election in March, 1935. He was re-elected without opposition in 1937 and again without opposition in March of this year.
He has had a turbulent administration as mayor due chiefly to the Works Progress Administration sewer project which voters of the community, in special election, decided to carry out by voting an appropriation. Although he had repeatedly declared that he had not voted for the start of the project, his engineering background has stood the village in good stead as he shouldered many of the details in its construction. Adoption of the milk pasteurization ordinance also helped to make the administration memorable. He also presided during Baldwinsville's mammoth jubilee celebration a year ago.
Flags on public buildings in Baldwinsville were flying at half mast this morning.
Mr. Bigelow was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, called Sachem hall, while attending Yale university. He was also a member of the Baldwinsville Presbyterian church and was a member of Seneca River lodge, 160, F. & A.M.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gladys Miller Bigelow; his mother, Mrs. Lillian Swetland Bigelow; one son, Payn Bigelow, 24, a sophomore at Purdue university; one daughter, Nancy, 18, a student of Central City Business institute; one brother, Payne Bigelow of Syracuse, and two sisters, Mrs. Robert W. Keyes of Utica and Mrs. J. Carl Connell of Baldwinsville.
