The Bigelow house is the largest and finest examples of Italianate architecture in Port Perry.
The house was built on Cochrane St. in 1876 by Joseph and Elizabeth Bigelow and remained in the family until 1980, when Bigelow's grandson William Carnegie sold it.
R31117, Robert Carnegie, son of David and Marion Bigelow (McCaw) Carnegie (Emma Josephine (Bigelow) McCaw, Hiram, Joel, Joel, Benjamin, Jonathan, Joshua, John) was born at Port Perry, Ont. Canada. He was joint owner with brothers Harry, Gord, and Don (sic) of Carnegie Brothers Hardware in Port Perry for many years.  They sold the hardware business in 1976, but did continue to run a Superior Propane business for several years before retiring.  The Carnegie's of Port Perry, Ontario can trace their historical association to the community back to the 1850s through the genealogy of the family of Joseph Bigelow.  His life's story has been well documented in the "Forge".  In many ways, his business interests were instrumental in transforming Port Perry from a small rural settlement to a modern town on the outskirts of Toronto today.

R31119, Harry Carnegie, was born at Port Perry, Ont., Canada 09 Nov 1919, the third child and second son of David Carnegie and Marion Bigelow (McCaw) Carnegie.
He was a World War II veteran and life-long resident of Port Perry.  He and his brothers, Bob, Gord and Don (sic) had been joint owners and operators of Carnegie Brothers Hardware in Port Perry for many years.  The brothers sold the hardware business in 1976, but did continue to run a Superior Propane business for several years before retiring.

R31118, Gordon Carnegie, was born in Port Perry, Ont. Canada. He was joint owner with brothers Bob, Harry, and Don (sic) of Carnegie Brothers Hardware in Port Perry for many years.  They sold the hardware business in 1976, but did continue to run a Superior Propane business for several years before retiring.

R22877, David Carnegie, son of David Gordon and Marion Bigelow (McCaw) Carnegie, was born in Port Perry,Ont. Canada in 1923. Died age 72.  03 June 1996 at Port Perry.(Forge).  He married Margaret Janet (Bigwood). Carnegie's of Port Perry, Ontario can trace their historical association to the community back to the 1850s through the genealogy of the family of Joseph Bigelow.

R30399, Donald Carnegie, son of David and Marion Bigelow (McCaw) Carnegie was born at Port Perry, Ont. Canada. He was joint owner with brothers Bob, Gord, and Harry (sic) of Carnegie Brothers Hardware in Port Perry for many years.  They sold the hardware business in 1976, but did continue to run a Superior Propane business for several years before retiring.  The Carnegie's of Port Perry, Ontario can trace their historical association to the community back to the 1850s through the genealogy of the family of Joseph Bigelow.
