"Edwin Benjamin ¹⁰ Bigelow, Sr. son of Edwin Josiah, William Francis, Josiah, Joab, Josiah Richardson, Jotham, John, Samuel, John) was born 03 September 1909 in Chicaogo Cook Co., Illinois, He died 29 December 1983 at Port Washington, Wisconsin of a heart attack.
   He studied violin for eleven years.  His violin was received as payment of rent to his mother from a tenant in Chicago, Illinois.   We still have the violin.  It was apraised and the information we have is that is was made in Germany in the 19th century - not an antique but is of good quality and has good sound.
   He quit high school when he was sixteen years old.  He traveled the country, going first to Alabama.  In 1925, he was in the Alabama National Guard.  While sitting on his horse, he accidently shot the end of the horse's head off when the horse turned its head as Edwin was shooting his pistol.
   In Texas, he worked on a ranch and once found a rattlesnake under the sheets of his bunk.
   He drove across Death Valley in a Model T Ford with a couple of friends.  While in California, he worked in the Imperial Valley picking grapes, olives, etc.  He learned how to drive a truck there.  He remembered going through Wyoming noting that people there wore side arms.
   In 1929, he worked as a motin picture projectionist.  He received the job through his father (Edwin Josiah Bigelow) who was a projectionist too.  The projectionist field at that time was unionized, so knowing someone or being related to someone was the only way to get hired.
   After getting married and having two sons, housing was hard to come by.  The flat where the family was living was to be vacated so the landlandy could live there.  Edwin bought 5.8 acres on the Milwaukee River in Grafton, Wisconsin, about 17 miles north of Milwaukee.  There, he built a house, garage and utility building with some help from his brother-in-law.  Edwin was a self-taught man.  He used three books for building his house.  We treasure these books now.  He was always up on the latest inventions sometimes simply taking something apart to see how it was put together.
   He dealt in stamp collection and sales of same.  He started both of his boys on stamp collecting when they were born.
   To make extra money while in Grafton, he bought a new McCormick-Deering Farmall Cub Tractor with all the attachments.  Besides use on the "Bigelow Farm" Edwin would cut grass for the Town of Grafton.  His son, Edwin, now has the tractor which is used for shoveling snow in winter.  It starts and works just fine!
   He taught himself to paint and do pen and ink drawings.  We have several of his works." For a short length of time, he ran a photography store. He was always taking pictures. When his son, Edwin Jr and his wife, Charlotte, went to the Orient in 1966, they brought back several camerasfor him. (submitted by a family member at the Bigelow Reunion in Ft. Edwin Bigelow passed away on Dec. 1, 2004, at the age of 68. In 1955, he launched a lifetime career when he began working in resin synthesis at Freeman Chemical in Port Washington, Wis. Ed moved into technical service for Freeman, and in 1976, he became technical director for Moline Paint. He later returned to Freeman and in 1985 became product manager for coatings, a position that incorporated sales management and distribution. When Freeman became a part of Cook Composites and Polymers (CCP), Ed was named national sales manager, a position he held until 1999, when in semi-retirement, he became a market development management consultant to CCP. Ed will be missed by colleagues and customers alike. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Sutton Bigelow; his children, Jason and Jessica; and a large extended family.
