son of George 7 ( George 6 , James 5 , James 4 , Jonathan 3, Joshua 2, John 1), and Martha (BOARDMAN)
BIGELOW, was born at Skowhegan, Somerset co., ME on 25 October 1835.
Skowhegan was called Bloomfield in those early days. He married 05
October 1857 Elvira Howe, daughter of Samuel Howe. She was born in Dexter,
ME on 06 September 1837. William attended Union College in Schenectady,
NY for 3 years. Then studied with Hon. James Bell of Skowhegan, and was admitted
to the bar in 1857. He entered the U. S. Navy in 1863, serving under Admiral
Dahlgren at Morris Island, Charleston, Savannah, Fernandina, and Hilton Head.
He was in the ME Legislature in 1868-69, an educational supervisor of Kennebec
co., 1869 and Postal Agent for New England in 1874 and later division superintendent
of the Railway Mail Service for New England. He also served as Postmaster
of the U.S.Senate. He died at Waterville, ME 13 May 1890.
