I found a photo of "Paul Bigelow" among my "keepsakes". I decided I should figure out he was.
I am descended from Josephine Ayer Smith, daughter of Tamson Bigelow and Isaac Titchenor Ayer.
(I once heard that he was named because the family was close to, or at least admired Isaac Tichenor,
governor of Vermont 1797–1807).
I found Paul listed in the 1860 census as a member of Mark Bigelow's household. Thanks to your website,
I was able to find that Mark and Paul were brothers.
The child listed as Herbert H (son of Mark) on the Bigelow Society website is listed as female on the census. The name looks like Huldabert; it is difficult to decipher. Chloe, and Hiram also live there, along with
Hannah, their mother.
Looks like Tamson & Paul were cousins. There is no further info with it, age or date or place taken.
I will gladly send a scan of the photo if you want to see it.
Hope this may be of some interest to other researchers.

Glenda, who has contacted me, and I are working on the surnames of Hillan
and Schoonover together. You have information listed on the Bigelow family
which I believe there may be an error ... and the explanation below should
clarify things (hopefully) as to why I believe the woman you have given as
Mary Miller may in fact be "our" Mary C Hillan. I do have information on the
parents of Mary Hillan which may help some of the Bigelow lines to go back
another generation if things work out as I believe they may. Please do correct
me if I have made faulty assumptions or you spot errors in our research.
My desire is to do it correctly and properly... could care less if I'm "wrong".
=) Please do help us if you can!
Connie
Hi Glenda,
I'm feeling fairly confident that we have the family of Mary Hillan,
sister of Susan Hillan Schoonover but there are a few snags to work out.
One that I have found is on a Bigelow family web page, which mentions
a genealogy book on the family. This book apparently lists the wife of Paul
Bigelow as Mary Caroline Miller. It gives no parents or sources for Mary.
I am wondering if someone looked at a marriage record and simply misread
it as Miller which could easily look like Hillan in old handwriting. The
souce I have for the marriage was on Rootsweb. (see following) A closer look
at the original marriage record might be helpful. Mary is too common of name
to make assumption although the 1920 census certainly seems to confirm our
point of view with Susan being named as aunt of Jesse Bigelow (I'll get
to my conclusions on his name in a minute) with Mary Gustus as his
mother. The ages fit, the p.o.b. given for parents etc all fit nicely. Cemetery
records could possibly be helpful if we can find burial locations.

This researcher is the one who has Mary with the surname of Miller.
I am sending him a copy of this letter in the hopes of clarifying the parents
of Mary and to see if he has other sources which give her parents names.
FYI:

Now.... on to Jesse... I picked
up his name from Ancestry.com in the WWI Draft cards. The 1920 cenus was unclear.
However, he is listed in the 1930 Council Bluff Pottawattamie Co IA census
with his mother Mary still alive. (Note that his profession is consistent
in both census and draft card) Interestingly she is listed here with
the surname of Biglow (neither of them are BigElow but rather Biglow), she
is not listed as Gustus as she was in the 1920 census but the age is consistant.
The middle initial is unreadable but does not appear to be a C.... looks
more like a G... but hard to tell what on earth it is exactly! grrrr! lol
Researching on the name Jesse / Jess Fillmore Bigelow has lead to information
posted on the family by other researchers on Ancestry.com and other web
sites. Pointedly... the all end with the mother being Mary Miller but do
not give her parents so I really do feel safe that it is actually Mary Hillan/Hillon
daughter of John and sister of Susan Hillan Schoonover.
I have also picked up Paul Biglow (no e again) in the 1880 Solomon Cloud
Co KS census with wife and children.
BIGLOW
Paul 40 NY NY CT laborer
Mary C 29 IL PA IN
James 10 IA NY IL
Millard 5 IA NY IL
(Just a mention-next door is a James Hill which could potentially though
doubtfully be a brother of Susan's if he
shortened his name but that is a jump and very uncertain as I believe her
brother James died in the civil war. Census records show Susan had a brother
James b 1846 IL... likely the one who was in Co F 39th IA Inf)
This James and Millard are given to be the brothers Jess or Jesse. So
it all fits. Problem- I've looked and looked to find a Mary Gustus or Mary
Bigelow or Biglow in the state census for IA, KS, NE... and in the
federal census IA, NE, KS in both 1900 and 1910 and have not yet found anyone.
This seems odd. Maybe we are misreading the Gustus name??? or the family is
split up because Paul died??? Not sure.... will have to keep looking.
Did located Millard Begelow
in 1900 Belle Parairie Fillmore Co NE... wife Clara son Dewitt... also found
them in later census 1910 Sharon Springs Wallace Co KS and 1920 Payette Payette
Co ID. Had a dead end on James, the older brother. Jesse apparently had a
first wife named Nettie (WWI Draft Card) then was listed as widowed in the
1920... other researches give his 2nd wife as Judith Peterson which fits with
the 1930 Council Bluff Pottawattamie Co IA census.
Whew! Connie

Yes, do send me your Nebraska surnames and where

You’re thoughts are the same as mine, on Susan Schoonover in Council Bluffs. Sister Mary and her son may have had
Other Bigelow family in the area and Mary also might be buried in the
area. This is kind of exciting..ha!

Now, on to
the point of this note..
The marriage possibilities that I had listed down (needing further
research) for John Hillan's daughter Mary (sister of Susan) was as follows:
"Paul Bigelow? m. 1 Jan 1870 Madison Co IA
OR
Wm J Logue? m 10 June 1874 Lawler Chickasaw
IA he died before 1895
The 1920 census
you sent looks quite intriguing... I have Ancestry.com membership also, and
access so some of the Heritage Quest library though my local library card.
I'm heading off to take a look at that census.... I'm thinking the name you
sent that was difficult to read may be the Bigelow name...
