My name is Roger L. Wittum.  I am a great grandson of Lucy Bigelow (B159B3.423).  The Bigelow Society is fascinating and tells much of the history of our country - as does the history of the Wittum Family that goes back to 1652 at Kittery.  I was looking at the page for Lucy Bigelow (B159B3.423) who married Frances Marion Wittum and then one of their sons was Sherman Garfield Wittum (159B3.4234) and would like to suggest a couple edits.

There is a question mark as to when Frances Marion Wittum and Lucy Bigelow married.  It was in 1867.  They lived on a farm in Chesaning, Tuscola, Michigan immediately next door to Lucy's sister, Maryette (? sic) Bigelow (10 Sep 1841 - 16 Jul 1923) and her husband Guilford Dudley Parrish (1832-1899).  I believe this occurred (since Frances Marion Wittum and Lucy Bigelow Wittum were living in Mundy, like many of the Jairus Bigelow family who had moved from New York to Genesee co., MI) due to Maryette and G. D. Parrish already having a farm there.  The Wittum family and the Parrish were very close - in fact during the Civil War, one of Frances Marion Wittum's uncles, Harlow B. M. Wittum (1838-1864) wrote many letters to the Parrish family while serving with the Wisconsin 10th Infantry.  He unfortunately was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga, Sep 1863 and died 4 months later in the CSA POW camp at Belle Isle, VA.  I have copies of these 26 letters.

Back to Lucy.  One of the sons of Lucy and F. Marion was Sherman Garfield Wittum who married Winifred Eliza SMITHINGELL (correction of the name given) (17 Sep 1882 - 24 Dec 1955).  The final edit would be that after my grandmother Winifred died, my grandfather did indeed marry a second time and it was to Sadie Kelly in 1956, but there is absolutely no indication she was a Kellogg.
Thank you so much for your work.  You must get multiple letters like this everyday.
Stay safe,
Roger L. Wittum, MD Email: < ptrca@aol.com>

This is the family reunion which I think might (?) be a Bigelow family reunion. On the far left in the foreground is a young man with arms held across his front and wearing a hat. That's my grandfather, Garfield Sherman Wittum (1880-1968). The photo is believed to have been taken in the summer of 1894 (so he's 14 and that fits the picture). Near the far right, in the backrow, in front of a tree trunk there's a small green X. That was placed years ago and is referred to on the back as "Uncle Alfred". Could this be Alfred Bigelow, born in 1858 and in 1870 lived with the Sanders family in Etna, Mecosta, MI? At any rate, I don't recognize any of these people as being Wittum family and in the 1890's, the Wittum family in Michigan wasn't this large. With my grandfather attending and being only 14, one would rightfully think it had to be a reunion of one of his parent's families - consequently I feel this is a Bigelow reunion. Tell me what you think..Roger Wittum
