New Note 04/23/05:
From: Lisa <nichols@acsworld.com>

Dear Rod:
I am researching the Randolph-Alexander
family history and was wondering if you could help me. I was sent
information on Lebbeus S. Bigelow and Priscilla Randolph by a distant cousin.
I noticed your E-mail on the information.
Priscilla (Randolph) Bigelow's sister,
Salena Randolph, married James E. Hunter (great-grandparents). Would
you have any information or pictures on the Randolph family? I have
Family Group Sheets on the Randolph's and Alexander's from Greenwood Furnace
State Park, Huntingdon County, Pa.
Also, I am looking for William Randolph
(Born-1780, Died-1857) and Mary Dukeman/Duchmann (Born-1783, Died-1855).
William and Mary are buried in the Hill Cemetery, McAlevy's Fort, Huntingdon
County, Pa. I understand there is a
Native American heritage in the Alexander-Randolph family history.
Would you have any knowledge of this heritage?
I would appreciate whatever you would
be willing to share. Please let me know any costs involved.
Sincerely,
Ruth W. Nichols

The Lewistown Sentinel ran this obit for Bert:
BERT BlGELOW DIES AT, AGE 65
Once Famous "Southpaw Much Beloved By Many
To Ben Bigelow has come the everlasting peace. Bert
died at 11:15 o'clock Saturday night at the Lewistown Hospital following an
operation. He numbered his friends by the thousands. Nearly everyone knew
Bert or heard of his uncanny prowess as a baseball pitcher.
Bert made his debut as a twirler of far more than
ordinary ability with Barrville nearly forty years ago and tales of his diamond
feats are still told when old timers reminisce. 'I'hese fans of yesteryear
invariably agree that Bert Bigelow possessed sufficient curves, control and
speed to have been a star in the big leagues. But Bert never had any urge
for either fame or fortune or to play on teams other than his native county.
During the last years of his life before being stricken
with the illness that caused his death Bert lived in Lingil Valley, doing
odd jobs for the writer about Laughing Waters and for some of his other neighbors.
He was a friend to every man, woman and child for miles aronnd the area in
which he lived, They all knew and loved Bert including the writer. News of
his death caused many profound expressions of grief.
Although he was 65 years of age he was always young
in spirit, always eager and active, so fond of life, it is hard for the writer
to believe that Bert is'nt coming back again to tho cabin in Lingle Valley
which he shared with his brother John, known far and wide as "The Jedge"
And who proceeded his younger brother in death lsst March 22.
Indeed Bert will be there. Aye, he will return in
spirit time and time again and often here at the foot of the seven mountains
for many years to come Bert's neighbors will recall him with happy memories.
The writer has never knew a more unselfish man,
He loved people and he literally poured himself out in lightening some one
else's load. There was absolutely nothing that Bert would not gladly and
cheerfully do for someone he considered his friend. I doubt if he evor gave
a fleeting thought to possible recompense.
Life to Oscar Egbert Bigelow was giving not receiving.
He was one of the very, very few men the writer has ever known whose friendship
carried no reservations whatsoever.
For the brief span of five or six years Bert tasted
greatness on the pitcher's mound and the plaudits of the multitude assailed
his ears. In the three decades that have elapsed since my friend was just
an humble working man, anxious to give an honest day's work for an honest
day's pay or no pay at all, if the one he was doing his stint for had no
money. Those who really knew Bert Bigelow will mourn him as one from a broken
Mold.
I'LL NOT FORGET, I'LL EVER BE HIS FRIEND
TILL MEMORY FADES AND I HAVE REACHED MY OWN JOURNEY'S END.
I'LL NOT FORGET UNTIL FOR ME THE SUNLIGHT ALSO DIES,
IN THE LINGLE VALLEY'S SKIES.
---M.M.

Wilber Bigelow, Bethlehem, where he is in charge of the tree nursery of Leigh
