New 2021:
I live in a house known as the Wilcox Tavern (1775 - 1815) and "later known as the Bigelow Hotel" in Norfolk, CT
Through various records in town hall my home was the Bigelow Hotel under the propriety of Mark Bigelow - the son of Capt Benjamin Bigelow (brother of Lemuel and Robert.) After the death of Mark and his wife Lydia - the house became the residence of their son, George R. Bigelow and then his daughter, Sarah Bigelow - who sold it to Mildred Mitchell in 1929 for $5000.
I have been asked to write a history of my house for the local paper - and aside from Ezekiel and Rosanna Wilcox (Willcocks) who built the house circa 1768, the Bigelow family lived here the longest.
I noticed on your website for the Bigelow Society that you have a photo of a home in Norfolk (later remodeled by Alfredo Taylor) and you identify that house as the Bigelow home. That house is around the corner from my house. My house is well documented in Norfolk history - and town records confirm - that this was the Bigelow home. The house that you site as Bigelow on your website was the cottage for Airly Beacon - another great home on Laurel Way not owned by the Bigelow's. At least that is what my records show.
My questions are:
-Any further information you may have on the Bigelow Hotel in Norfolk would be greatly appreciated.
-How did you identify that home on your website as the Bigelow house?
I do have photos of Bigelow's here on the porch dated mid and late 19th century.
I have attached a present photo of my house - as well as two "Bigelow" photos one from the 19th century (circa 1870's based on the clothing) and the other by photographer Marie Kendall from circa 1911. The house was known as Willow Heights during this time frame as well.
Anything you can share is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
All the best,
Michael Selleck
