Hi Rod,It has been a while since I have corresponded with you and I have some more information on Edwin Bigelow who married Ida Forester.  I will try to organize it in the next week or so and forward it to you for consideration.  It could replace ALL the information I sent before that is on Edwin's page, if that would be possible. Some of it is correct and some is addition since I've obtained most documents, that I could find, as far as marriage, death and civil war records which showed all of their children and the dates they were born, etc.  It sure filled in a lot of blanks.Since that time I've found his and Ida's gravesite, which didn't have a stone.  I worked with a gentleman in Jackson who went to a lot of effort to obtain and set a new Civil War stone from the Government.  The just got it set right before winter last November.  It is a great looking stone.  Are you interested in a picture of the stone too? I've been fairly busy with other matters and am having "family search" withdrawls and can't wait to get back to it.
Thanks
Phyllis Irish

Descendants of Edwin Burnham Bigelow

16C43.27      Edwin Burnham 7 BIGELOW, son of George M. 6 ( Eleizer 5 , Joshua 4 , Eleazer 3 , Joshua2, John1 ) and Hannah (LOCKE) BIGELOW (Source: Marriage Certificate.) was born 09 December 1838 in Springfield, Oakland co, MI, and died 22 September 1916 in Jackson, Jackson co, MI (Source: Death Certificate. Registered Jackson, Jackson co, MI).  He married (1) MARY A. STEVENS (see below) 07 February 1865 in Fenton, MI (Source: Bigelow/Stevens Marriage, From Edwin Bigelow Diary, Page 198, Town and date from Civil war Pension records), daughter of SIMONS STEVENS and MARY CRAWFORD.  She was born 1841 in Maine (Source: Death Certificate), and died 28 May 1877 in Minneapolis, MI.  He married (2) IDA E. FOERSTER HUNT  03 September 1883 in Jackson, Jackson co, MI, daughter of GEORGE FOERSTER and ERNESTINE WEISS.  She was born 27 November 1854 in New Orleans, Parish of Orleans, LA (Source: Civil War Pension records.), and died 20 September 1919 in Jackson, Jackson co, MI (Source: Death Certificate Jackson co, MI).

Edwin attended a rural school in Davisburg, a grade school in Pontiac and an academy in Detroit. His father's death in 1854 slammed shut many doors of opportunity for Edwin.  Age 17 he worked on the steamboat Forester for several years.  In Spring 1858 he enrolled in the Michigan Agricultural College at East Lansing but left school about July because of lack of funds and before earning any grades for the term.  He taught school in Pontiac and worked in the Davisburg area.  Civil war in 1862 through 1865.  He moved to Minneapolis in 1867 and worked in as a pharmacist in a drug store, and lived there until 1877 when his wife, Mary, died.  Disconsolate, he sought solace in the Tennessee back country, living alone and trying to work to forget his loss.  An ax glanced from a branch and cut his foot, and when infection set in he bid farewell to the Tennessee hideout.  He returned to Jackson and worked with his brother from around 1880 to 1884 in the photography business. The Bigelow Art gallery was located at 118 E Main.  He met and married Ida Foerster Hunt in 1883, widow of Horace Hunt.  The next decade Edwin tried a variety of assignments.  After selling his studio he was yardmaster at the Michigan State Prison and introduced Strawberry culture on the farm.  For a time he was a bookkeeper for a grocery firm.  In 1898, at the age of sixty, an endowment policy came due.  With it he built a drugstore at 402 Steward and operated it until his retirement in 1916.  He died Sept 22, 1916.  In his last year he was a regular attendant at every ball game in Jackson and had a certain seat reserved for him and enjoyed relating Civil War stories, and his diary was a treasure he prized highly.

In December of 2002 I contacted Bill Lowe, Graves Registration Officer, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Jackson MI.  I had been trying to find the cemetery where Edwin and Ida were buried. He spent some time finding the information and he discovered that there was a plot for Edwin and Ida but no gravestones.  He graciously offered to contact the Government for a free Civil War stone for Edwin and a wife's stone for Ida, erect them on their plot and take a picture for us. 9 months later the stones were in place and a huge debt of gratitude is owed Bill Lowe.    .

Edwin referred to Mary as "Mate"  in his Civil War Diary.

Marriage: February 07, 1865, Davisburg, Springfield Township, Oakland Co, MI

Notes for IDA HUNT FORESTER:
Ida Forester Hunt was the widow of Horace Hale Hunt.  A marriage license search could possibly list her last name as Hunt.
Forester spelling from Edwina Death Certificate/Roy RR records.  Marriage lisence listing and Edwina Birth Certificate says Foerster.   Forrester spelling taken from the Civil War Diary of Edwin Bigelow. Written documents all say Forester.  Typed information says Foerster or Forrester.
1865 birth year is probably incorrect.  Children with her fist husband Horace Hunt were born in 1877 and 1878.

Hello from Australia,
I have landed on your Edwin Bigelow website and whilst I can't connect to Bigelow I am descendant from Crawfords.  Mary Stevens' mother was Mary Packard Crawford and sister to my great-great-grandfather.
I have a photo of Edwin and a young girl taken by Bigelow photographer which I've been hoping to identify for years now.  Thankfully for your site, I can, although the girl is still a mystery as to who she is.  She was a pretty girl.
Trouble is only a month ago I returned the albums these were in to my cousin in Victoria.  I didn't keep a copy simply because I couldn't find a name to go with these, but always remember the E Bigelow written on it, and from memory the girl's photo the name Bigelow was printed onto the card.
Hoping this helps, if you want anything on the Stevens-Crawford side I can help to some degree.
regards
