This is my first visit to your site, and it looks
very interesting! I have 28 genealogy reports at my home page, including
the descendants of John Bigelow of Watertown, MA. I am not a direct descendant
of John Bigelow (Biglo), but my step grandfather was John Edwin Bigelow,
b. Nova Scotia, d. 1932 in Kensington, Contra Costa co, CA.
John Edwin 9 Bigelow (Benjamin David 8, David 7 , Ebenezer
6
, Amasa 5 ,
Isaac
4, Isaac
3, Samuel
2, John1). As John
Edwin Bigelow was the only father my mother ever knew, I added the Bigelow
line to my genealogy reports. Thanks for your efforts.

WAB:
Lena Taber was an identical twin to her sister, Lora. They were born
in Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California, in 1874,
the fourth and fifth children of Orrin and Calista Taber. Their parents
had come to Colma, San Mateo County, California in
June 1869, from their home in Manchester, New Hampshire, travelling
by ship to the Isthmus of Panama, then by ship to San
Francisco. They brought with them their first two children, Charles
age 3 1/2 years and Orrin Jr, only 10 months old. Lena's
father started the Guadalupe (in 1880 the Christopher) Diary in Colma,
where in 1871 their third child, Samuel, was born. In
1872 the family moved to Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California,
where he engaged in farming. Here Lena and Lora
were born. In the Fall of 1875, the family moved again, to the nearby
city of San Jose, also in Santa Clara County, where her
father opened an agricultural implement store for Frank Brothers of
San Francisco. He was still in this business in 1881,
according to her father's biography in the History of Santa Clara published
in that year. Sometime prior to 1894 the family
moved to Oakland, Alameda County, where, in 1898 Lena was married to
Ural Sumner Hughes of Franklin, Venango County,
Pennsylvania. The marriage license shows him as "of Pennsylvania and
a resident of Stent, Tuolumne Co, CA." They were
married in her father's home on Hobart Street in Oakland by Rev. August
Peterson, Pastor of the Norwegian and Danish ME
Church of Oakland. Ural disliked his first name, and went by the name
of Fred. He was apparently a minister at that time,
possibly a Methodist, but when, shortly after their marriage, they
moved to Washington, DC, he was identified as a salesman.
The nespaper article describing their marriage, refers to him repeatedly
as "Rev. Hughes". According to comments made by
Lena to the compiler, he was removed from his ministerial duties by
the church for immoral conduct. In Washington, DC, 9
February 1899, their only child was born, Lorena Frances. When Lorena
was very young, her father walked out on her
mother, leaving her destitute and, understandably, very bitter toward
Lorena's father. Lena worked as a seamstress in their
home to provide income, and doing this work one day she accidently
knocked over an oil lamp which ignited her clothing,
causing severe burns from her shoulders to her knees. Her husband's
failure to come to her, even in these now even more dire
times, caused his family to come to her aid, and essentially disown
their son. The Hughes family in Franklin, Pennsylvania,
provided the best of medical care to Lena and took in Lorena while
her mother was hospitalized. In about 1900 the crippled
Lena and her young daughter travelled by train to Oakland, California,
and lived with her father, who was then living in
Oakland. Lena was a very determined woman, and even though she had
been told she would never walk again, with the
excellent physical therapy she received in Pennsylvania, she made a
remarkable recovery, and walked very naturally the rest of
her life. Lena and Lorena moved with Lena's father to San Francisco
in about 1901. Times were very difficult, because her
father was frequently on the road for long periods, and provided insufficient
financial support. In a letter in the possession of the
compiler, she, in 1904, wrote a brother that she considered herself
very fortunate when she ended the month with five cents! In
April, 1906, the San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire destroyed
the city. Lena, Lorena and Orrin's home was not
destroyed, but the family had to cook in the street, as no chimneys
were to be used. Then the family was moved temporarily to
the Twin Peaks to camp. Lorena had vivid memories as a seven year old,
of watching from Twin Peaks as San Francisco
burned below them. In October, 1906, only six months after the earthquake,
Lena married John Bigelow in the quake ravaged
city and moved to Berkeley, across the bay in Alameda County. John
Bigelow had two sons, Benjamin, age 6, and Roy, age 4.
John's first wife, Ethyl Fairchild Bigelow, died in 1903, when the
boys were only 3 and 1 year old, respectively. Jack, as he
preferred to be called, was a good provider, and Lena, for the first
time in her life, was without financial worries. It was a
difficult marriage in other ways, with Jack always showing favoritism
to his own sons, to the detriment of Lena and Lorena. The
new Bigelow family lived in several homes in Berkeley, and for a five
year period in Long Beach, Los Angeles County,
California, and also in Calistoga, Napa County. In about 1928 Jack
and his two sons, who built homes in the Berkeley area
under the firm John E. Bigelow and Sons, built a home for the family
in Kensington in the Berkeley hills. It is a magnificent
house with four bedrooms on two floors, a covered driveway, four car
garage, five lawns, full basement, and a solarium with a
large balcony above with a beautiful view straight out the Golden Gate.
In 1932 Jack Bigelow developed cancer and died.
Lena lived in the home alone until 1937 when her daughter, Lorena,
recently widowed with two children, Carolyn, age 7 and
William, age 5, came to live with her. They remained in this home until,
due to Lena's heart problems, in 1951, they sold the
home and moved to a home in North Berkeley on Tacoma Avenue. Lena died
in 1958, and Lorena and her two children
continued to live in the home.
John immigrated, 1868. Destination: Seattle, WA. He petitioned the
court to become a citizen in Seattle, WA ?, 1876. John
was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Berkeley,
Alameda Co, CA. He resided in Berkeley, Alameda Co,
CA 13 Jun 1900, 1941 Berkeley Way. John was listed as the head of a
family on the 1920 Census in Berkeley, Alameda Co,
CA. He resided in Berkeley, Alameda Co, CA 14 Jan 1920, 2336 Ward Street.
John Edwin BIGELOW was employed before 1932, in Berkeley, Alameda co, CA.
The following biography of John E. Bigelow was written by the compiler,
WAB:
John Edwin Bigelow was born in Kingsport, Nova Scotia, Canada, in January,
1868. Later that year, he and his parents
immigrated to the United States, and lived in the Seattle, Washington
area. His sister, Emma, was born there in 1874, as,
perhaps, was his other sister, Mae. In 1876 his father, mother and
he were naturalized as U.S. citizens. As he was only eight
years old, this was unusual, but the 1900 census states that was natualized
in that year. In 1900 John, who became known as
Jack, is included with his family in the Federal Census, living on
Berkeley Way in Berkeley, Alameda County, California. The
records are strange, with his father listed as David B. Bigelow, where
he should have been listed as Benjamin David Bigelow.
Jack was already married (in about 1899) to Ethyl Fairchild of Colorado
and they were living with his parents and their infant
son, Benjamin, born in January of 1900. Jack and Ethyl were, apparently,
married in Colorado, and she died, in Berkeley,
giving birth to one of their children in October, 1903. Their second
son, Roy, born 1902, was only one year old when his
mother died, leaving Jack to raise two young sons without a mother.
Sometime around 1904 Jack met Lena Taber Hughes,
who had returned to the Oakland area with her five year old daughter,
Lorena, following Lena's severe burns in Washington,
D.C. suffered shortly after her first husband, Ural Sumner (Fred) Hughes
deserted her and Lorena. Jack and Lena were
married in October 1906, in San Francisco, only five months after the
1906 earthquake and fire almost totally destroyed the
city. Lena, Lorena, and Lena's father, Orrin, were living in San Francisco
when the earthquake struck, and they all had vivid
memories of it, and the fires and aftershocks that followed. The Methodist
church where they were married, must have suffered
extensive damage, but the marriage certificate indicates they were
married in that church. Jack may have been living in Berkeley
at the time, as he was in 1902 when Roy was born to his first wife,
Ethyl. In about 1908, Jack moved his family to Signal Hill,
above Long Beach, California. They had vacationed there, and Jack decided
to move there, never realizing that the land on
which they lived for about five years was over an extensive field of
oil. Signal Hill is now an unattractive, derrick filled area, still
producing oil. Unfortunately, Jack Bigelow did not reap the benefits
of the oil discoveries made only a few years after he sold
their home! In about 1913 the Bigelow family moved to Napa County,
California, living in the Calistoga area of the north end of
the beautiful Napa Valley. Vinyards were not extensive in those days,
as the primary cash crop was prunes in Napa County.
Lorena, Ben and Roy all went to school here, all three graduating from
Calistoga High School. The family returned to Berkeley
in about 1918, where Lorena went to the University of California, later
finishing her studies in Pharmacy at the University's San
Francisco campus. When Jack's sons, Ben and Roy were of age, the three
founded the home building firm of John E. Bigelow
and Sons, and built many homes in Berkeley and in Kensington in the
Berkeley hills. They also constructed a magnificent show
place of a home for the family in Kensington, which was completed in
about 1928. This was the last home for Jack Bigelow,
dying in the home of cancer in 1932. Lena continued to live there,
when, in early 1937, Lorena's husband, Cedric, died in
Napa Valley, so Lorena and her two children, Carolyn and Billy, moved
into the home with Lena. In 1952 a heart condition of
Lena's forced the family to sell the home and move to a single level
home on Tacoma Avenue in the Solano Avenue area of
Berkeley. Lena died in May, 1958, a wonderful, loving mother to Lorena
and Jack's two sons, and then very much a
co-mother in the raising of Lorena's children, Carolyn and Bill Barnett,
while their mother worked as a hospital pharmacist to
support the family. She was a great lady, very intelligent, but largely
self educated, with a wonderful personality. Unfortunately,
Carolyn was only two years old when Jack Bigelow died, so she never
really knew her grandfather, and her brother Bill was
born shortly after he died. Jack Bigelow was an excellent provider
to Lena and the family, but was a difficult man, and
unfortunately hid his obvious effection for his step daughter, Lorena,
showing perhaps too much attention to his own sons, Ben
and Roy. But he was a far greater man than Lena's first husband, Ural
S. Hughes, who did not seem to want anything to do
with their mother, Lena, or their child, Lorena.
