I only recently discovered that your surname and mine are derivatives of the same root.  I am descended from Robert Baguley (1550-1590) through his son Hugh (1580-1629) down to the immigrant Peter born in 1608 in Siddington, Cheshire and landing in Nansemond County, Virginia in 1635.  The name changed to Bagley during the 17th century and to Begley during the 18th.
Family legend has it that our earliest ancestor was transported to America for stealing a goose - and that the village was named for the family.  For years I have been trying to locate a village in England called Begley.
If you would like more information on your southern cousins, write me back and I''ll provide you with what I have.

I recently discovered your website - where you mention
a lot about the Hamon Massey and other Barons of
Dunham in Cheshire... Yet, I could not tell how the
Masseys' family line is related to the Baguley? I am a
direct decendant of Hamon the IV (see IV) thru his son William
older brother of Hamon the V. Any information that you
have would be useful- I also have information that
predates Hamon the I going back to the year 949..

On the subject of Herluin de Burgh - in my
research, his marriage to Frendsindis, only produced 2
children, both of whom were sons. While his marriage
to Arletta, produced 6 children , one of whom was the
unknown de Conteville who married William de la Ferte
Mace.  Emma tends to be the child that raises skeptism
on whether or not if she is a child of Herluin and
Arletta. Most of the 6 children, were sons, and only 2
were daughters. The sons did fight along their half
brother William the Conquerer.
  thanks again, Nichole

{ 16385 Alice De Vernon}. She was the daughter of { 32770. Ralphe De Vernon}.

Children of Richard De Baguley and Alice De Vernon are:

i... Ralph De Baguley, born 1500; died 1540; married Ciceley Massey.

ii.. John De Baguley.

iii. William De Baguley, born 1319.

{ 16386. Hamon Massey,} born 1210; died 1273. He was the son of { 32772. Hamon De Mascy IV} and { 32773. Mainwaring}. He married { 16387. Ciceley} 1253-1255.

{ 16387.} { Ciceley,} died Aft. 1275.

Notes for Hamon Massey:
All of his legitimate children were minors at the time of his death, their custody, until they attained what was then considered legal age was by the concession of Jacopo de Alditheley ( James Audley), Justice of Cheshire, given to Alicia de Bello Campo. He obtained control of several estates in Lancashire and Cheshire which were Ciceley's dower rights as Gernet's widow.

Notes for Ciceley:
In 1275 she was granted license to grant one-half acre to the lepers at Longueford.

Children of Hamon Massey and Ciceley are:

i... Hamon VI Massey, born Abt. 1256; died 1342 in Flintshire, Wales; married (1) Isabel De Beauchamp; married (2) Alice De Beauchamp; married (3) Joan Clinton.

Notes for Hamon VI Massey:
After the death of his only son, Hamon VI fell in love with Joan Clinton, sister of the Earl of Huntingdon, and he looked for any excuse he could find to marry her. His station of rank was such that he was able to have the church declare that his marriage to Alice Beauchamp, the mother of his children, illegal under a religious tenet: ie his marriage to Alice was invalid because she was a sister of his first wife. So the Church by a fiat declared that Hamon's marriage to have been meretricious, with Alice declared to have borne bastard children, and thus the children were declared illegitimate. Baron Hamon VI married Joan Clinton after he was freed from Alice, but no children were born from this union. Joan Clinton before her death in 1329, proved to be as extravagant as Hamon VI was profligate. First he sold his life estate to Dunham-Massey as well as other estates to one Robert De Frodesham. Afterward he sold the reversion rights thereto to Olicer De Inghon who was the justice of Cheshire.

ii.. Ciceley Massey, married Ralph De Baguley.

iii. Alice Massey, married William Stanley {WFT Est. 1403-1446}

Notes for William Stanley:
He was a member of the Audley family, some of whom left their name as Alderley, appended to the villages and estates which were located to the east from Knutsford toward Macclesfield. This family descended from Adam de Aldethelegh, who lived during the reign of King Henry I (1100-1135). The Stanley family would have been neighbors of members of the Massey family.

{ 65545. Agatha De Theray}.
{ 65545. Agatha De Theray,} died Aft. 1215.

Notes for Hamon De Mascy III:
He founded the Abbey Birkett at Birkenhead in the Wirrall Peninsula of Cheshire. He lived during the later part of the reign of King Stephen, and during the entire reign of King Henry II, Plantagenet which ended in 1189. Hamon III may have been compelled to forfeit several of those original estates granted to the first Hamon by reason of his participation in the 1172 Baronial rebellion against King Henry II. Hamon III operated in opposition to King Henry II from his castle at Ullerwood, just below Knutsford. His activities were undertaken in conjunction with those of Gervaise Psinel, the son-in-law of Ferrers, the Earl of Derby. It was Gervaise who held the fee of Pownell immediately to the East of Knutsford. Barons Hamon III, Geoffrey de Constantine of Stockport, and Richard de Morville at Lauder, seem to have been the leaders of the rebel Lords in Cheshire. In 1173 King Henry II's English Barons overcame Hamon III and the other Cheshire Lords. Hamon III was fined 300 marks; his companion Gervaise Painel, had his stronghold, Dudley Castle, burned to the ground.

Children of Hamon De Mascy and Agatha De Theray are:

i   Robert De Mascy.

Notes on William De Baguley:
Sir William de Baggiley (aka: de Baguley) born c1260 was knighted by King Edward I, and later married one of the King's daughters. Her name was Lucy Corona (see below). ( 2020 see below) She was born out of wedlock. This was quite common in those days for the King to have children from someone other than the Queen. Lucy's mother (a Lady in Waiting) worked in the King's court. Sir William and Lucy had five children. The children married into well-to-do families. During this time the Baguley family were quite well up in the aristocracy of England. They owned the Salt Mines in Cheshire and a mill for processing. This is where they made their money.
New info 2020:
Lucy Plantagenet Baroness Corona (1265-1316) was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England, according to Netherland’s Geneologie Online Trees Index, 1000-2015, which identifies her husband as Lord William deBaguley Sr., Knight; and her son as William deBaguley. Please notice that her birth year is recorded as 1265.
Medieval times were rampant in war and unbearable living conditions. My Mother had told me that her family had descended from King Edward, Not only through the Baguleys, and that the Royal family today did not like the fact that Lucy had been born to a “lady in waiting”—a mistress; and, although this fact is humiliating, Lucy Plantagenet Baroness Corona (1265-1316) has long been recorded in the Netherland’s Geneologie. The page within the Geneologie was moved to a location that is not accessible in the English language.

From: Michael Gallagher peyggq2660@comcast.net

In the reign of Edward II, (1284-1327), Sir William de Baggiley (aka: Sir William de Baguley) born c1260, was Lord of Baguley. Sir William built Baguley Hall c1320 and was Lord of the Manor until his death. At the time of his death, he also owned a manor at Hyde and another at Levenshulme in Lancashire, plus an inn called The Ryle Thorn in Baguley. He was succeeded by his son John Baggiley (aka: John Baguley) born c1290; who died around 1356(Refer 2) and his daughter Isabel as joint heirs of his property. Isabel married Sir John Leigh of Booths, a widower. Their eldest son William inherited Baguley. The manor remained in the Leigh family until the late seventeenth century, when the line terminated in Edward Leigh. He had married Elinour Tatton of Wythenshawe Hall. And although they had three daughters, there was no son to succeed him. (Refer 3)

An effigy of Sir William is housed in St. Mary's Church, Bowden Parish, Cheshire. (Refer 4) Not far from the old Baguley Hall. Originally there was a Baggiley (Baguley) coat of arms vis: The losenges were asure on an orange background. It is understood that this coat of arms was demolished when the property of John Baggiley (Baguley), Baguley Hall was made over to Sir John Leigh of Booths near Knutsford around 1353.

i.  William De Baguley, born 1310; died 1350; married Clementia De Cheadle.

From: John M. Fintel      <  johnfintel@crescentlink.com  >
My name is John Fintel and I've been doing a lot of research into my geneology and I came across your website while researching a line in my family tree. Looking at the chart you had on your website that was from volume 1 of the bigelow family geneology, I noticed you had a John Hyde married to an Isabella and this isabella had a father named william. This caught my eye and i went and checked on my family tree and sure enough i found an Isabell De Baggilegh with a husband named John Hyde and a father named William and from the dates you had on your site, this seemed like too much of a coincidence. as it turns out, Isabel De Baggilegh (with my father being the 1st generation) is only 22 generations back and is from baggilegh, england. She was born in 1249 and died sometime after 1358. If you could give me anymore information on this person this would be greatley appreciated, if it's the same person then we might even be cousins 22 generations apart, who knows.

{ 262177. Margaret De Sacie}. She was the daughter of { 524354. Le Sire De Sacie}.

Notes for Hamon De Mascy:
Sites of the estates obtained by Hamon I in addition to a house in Chester and land on the Wirral pensuli a were Ullerton (Owlarton). It is about two miles south-southeast from the town of Knutsford. Going northwest to the Mersey River - notheast to Bramhall (Bromhale), which in those days was about two miles southwest from Stockport. thence below Stockport t o the Mersey River. With these two lines denoting the southeast and southwest boundry and the Mersey River would constitute the northern boundry of an area having a triangular shape. At about the midway point of the northern boundry on the Mersey River would be the river crossing to the city of Manchester's original location in Lancashire, which lies to the north of Chester. This probably marks the area of the greatest holdings of the Barons De Mascy in Cheshire. Within these lands Hamon De Mascy had lesser Lords who held portions thereof for him or under his 'right'. A couple of examples would be Adae De Carrington and Alano De Tatton. Both constituted estates granted to Hamon. In 1092 King William Rufus was a guest at the court of Hugh Lupus in Chester. At least two of his barons attended the King, Hamon De Mascy and William Venables. There is mention of  the Venables Family in Venables file. They along with their entourage of adherents and servants of Hamon, accompanied the King on a hunting expedition in the Wirrall Peninsula. This probably took place on lands which had been set aside as a hunting preserve of the King and treated as his possession which had not been the subject of a grant, not even to Earl Hugh Lupus.
No doubt it was as a consequence of some occurance on this hunting expedition that a new estate was give to Hamon I, in fee of Hugh Lupus. The estate, Pontington (today called the area around the village of Puddington), was on such occasion granted by the King himself, so that therafter the De Mascy Cheshire Barons held it in fee of the King rather than in fee of the Earl. For that reason Pontington was in later years especially prized. We can only speculate upon the reason which inspired King William Rufus to make this grant. However as soon as the hunting party returned to Hugh Lupus' castle at Chester, Hamon sought out a scrivener, no doubt a monk whose duties were appropriate to the purpose recorded as follows: "I, William King of England do give unto Massy all my right, interest and title to the hop and hopland (valley l and) from me and mine to thee and thine with bond (boundry) and limit from heaven above to hell below, to hold of me and mine with bow and arrow when I shoot upen yerrow ( the place), and in witness to the sooth (action or statement) I seal with my wang tooth." Inscribed as witness was William Venables "fratre suo".
In the consideration given to the first Hamon De Mascy it should be remembered that he was a part of the court and governing body of nobles in Cheshire at a time when Cheshire was a county Palatinate under Earl Hugh Lupus. What this means is that its rule was like that unto a country under martial law. At least Earl Hugh Lupus was not hampered by either King William the Conqueror or King William Rufus, and he reigned in Cheshire as a king. The Ba rons and their lords were almost constantly put to defense against the Welsh on Cheshire's western border and to maintain control over the Saxons who made up a great bulk of the population.
Hamon Massey, the first baron of Dunham-Massy, held the towns of Dunham, Bowden, Hale, Ashley, and half of Owlerton, in Bucklow hundred, under Hugh Lupus, Earl of Cheshire, in the reign of William the Conqueror; all of which one Edward held formerly, as appears by Domesday Book. So as it seems to me, that this Edward was dispossessed of his right therein, and these lands given to Hamon by Earl Hugh.
This Hamon had also in Maxfield Hundred, Bromhale and Puddington in Wirrall Hundred, at the same time, and other lands. The last two paragraphs from History of Cheshire by Sir Peter Leycester.

Children of Hamon De Mascy and Margaret De Sacie are:
i.  Robert De Mascy.
Notes for Robert De Mascy:
He was found to have been holding one of the family estates, Pontington, in "Knight's Fee" of his brother Hamon II. From 'History of Cheshire' by Ormerod.

ii. Hamon De Mascy II, born Abt. 1100 in England; died 1140 in Dunham, Lancashire, England; married Eleanor De Beaumont.

In 1172 many English nobles rose against the King in protest of his attempt to increase his royal authority. This provides a history that shows Randall Baguley (b. abt 1578 in
Wrentham, Suffolk)'s father as Robert Baguley rather than the Philip
(1544-abt 1600) you show.
If you use the lineage at the pages linked to above (if they are correct),
the line goes back even further, to Sir William de Baguley, b. abt. 1260,
married to Lucy Corona, supposedly an illegitimate daughter of King Edward
II. Loring Bigelow (more on him below) says, "I did dig out my records to
try and help you - Wm. de Baguley that you refer to [b. 1260] - his mother
was dgtr. of Hamon Massey." The register shows  Richard de Baguley, b. 1243
(before Sir William de Baguley mentioned above) having a son Ralph who
married ___ de Massey, daughter of Hamon de Massey. Judging by the dates,
they both could have married daughters of Hamon de Massey. The second
Bigelow Society webpage above has a note, "as to whether Hamon Massy, Baron
of Durham [your register says Dunham] was a direct ancestor of Sir William
de Baggiley (aka: de Baguley) still has to be established. If Loring's
information is right (and I don't know whose is), then Sir William de
Baggiley's wife is the direct descendant of Hamon de Massey.

I know you got your information from Rod so I don't know what to make of the
differences. Maybe you already have sorted it out and put your conclusion

Additionally there are some Baguley gedcoms that can be downloaded from
ancestry.com that appear to be other lines but use some of the same names. I
haven't sat down with it all, and I wonder if anyone is crunching all the
files available with whatever sources are given.
Any thoughts about this  would be most welcome, as it will
help me to put accurate information in my gedcom and leave out anything that
is still up in the air.
Best, Martha

Hi Rod, this is your cousin through Patience Bigelow.  I was looking through your site this weekend, there's a lot of new stuff in there since I really dug around in it.  I have a question:  in the Baguley Family Page 5, there is a disclaimer that some of it is unresearched.  I saw on the Baguley History page the line from John to the people at Ollerton Hall.  Is this accurate, to the best of your knowledge?  That chart that was drawn makes me think it's been researched.  The Lucy Corona, daughter of Edward I, where did that info come from?  I can't find her listed even in the info that mentions illegitimate children.  I tried the links on the Baguley History page but they didn't take me anywhere.  Either the server was busy or they no longer are valid links.  I really appreciate your help.  Your website has so much great stuff in it!  Thanks a lot!  Mary Ellen in Memphis

Rod,
James Baguley in Canberra, Australia. Just thought I would start looking up to see what family names I could find. I found your
pages and got the OOPs message.
A little background might be in order. My great grandfather, Alfred John Baguley came from Manchester, England to Australia
around ?1860?. He settled at Sandy Flat, near Tenterfield in New South Wales. I have not found any connection to Alfred in my
search so far. I was hoping that there may be a link to your tree. If this could be verified it would be great. I will try to find out more
detail to see if it will fill in any missing parts.
Anyway, I hope you appreciate my thoughts.
Thanks
Jim Baguley

 Hi Rod,

Just browsing thru your pages again for anything new and saw the posting on the Baguley Hall page from Pamela Haeussler.

Since making contact with Pamela a while back (she replied to my visitor posting on the Bigelow pages) I have been in correspondence, on and off. It's been great to find another family member and I have passed to Pamela the family tree work done by her father, which my parents had (Irl Baguley visited Ted Baguley, my father, in 1963).  She was very pleased, I think!
I am also now in regular contact with two of Irl Baguley's sons, Norman & Keith, in Michigan and shall send them your web addresses, particularly
Baguley Hall etc.
All of this through yours and the previous work - keep it up!
Regards,

My  neighbour is Peter Baguley and I was printing out the pages of all your entries for him. He has birth certs of his father etc. going back to the 1800s and was taken to Baguley Hall when younger, but he seems to think his family came here from
Staffordshire which is not far from the BAGULEYarea. He's in bed at the moment and can't stand the pace like us owd uns.
My only problem with my search is a man in ontario named Grant William Vallis but his e-mail address given in his family web page keeps bouncing back. I have gone back to 1770 with Vallis name and wondered if we could connect but I can't. You have a great site. I am enjoying it but can't understand why the quarterings have the scythe crest twice. My only relative over there  was buried at Beacon Hill, Saskat. I hope to see the grave one day but time is running out. I was on my way during the war as evacuee but ship got sunk off Northern Ireland or I may have been closer than I am now.

Dear Rod, my name is Chris Baguley, and I live in Sydney Australia, I have been interested in finding my genealogy for quite some time now,and being on the internet i finally have the resourse available to do it with ease..it appears that the Bigelow name is the same as Baguley, which is something I did not previously know, however I did know about the towns of Baguley near Manchester England..anyway, if you  could possibly get back to me with some family details it would be gr8ly appreciated..

I have been researching our family tree after Karen Dore contacted my
mother. We are a family of Baguley in Stafford, Staffordshire although I know
my grandfather or great grandfather was from Sheffield. Both their names
were Charles John Baguley although my grandfather was known as "Jack" and
was born circa 1900 (died 1985). He married a lady called Anne and had two
sons, Brian George and Raymond. My father Brian George Baguley was born
26.9.1949 and passed away on 20.9.1984. His brother Raymond lives in
Cannock now, but we have had no contact with him since my father died. My
mother has since remarried a Marshall who was also previously married to a
Bagley in Nottingham. I am currently trying to link ourselves to Baguley in
Manchester and "yes" Baguley Hall is still there, although the town of Baguley
itself is in a place called Wythenshaw which has quite a bad reputation. I
know Karen Dore has been researching this line too, but I hope this
information is of use to you.

I have read your website with great interest as my Mother was a Baguley.
She was due to start to trace her Father's family history Christmas 2000
following her retirement but sadly died 11 December. Therefore I have started
to trace our Baguley line; which at first was quite daunting, but with the help
and support of websites, like yours, and local lists I think I am getting there.
                        Keep up the good work.

Hi Rod, this is your cousin through Patience Bigelow.  I was looking through your site this weekend, there's a lot of new stuff in there since I really
dug around in it. I can't find her listed even in the info that mentions
illegitimate children.  I tried the links on the Baguley History page but they didn't take me anywhere.  Either the server was busy or they no longer are valid links.  I really appreciate your help.  Your website has so much great stuff in it!  Thanks a lot!  Mary Ellen in Memphis

Hi Rod,

Your page Baguley Page 5, that is still on the web, has given me lots of problems. It would seem that the whole page was attrbuted to me when it
clearly was not my page. In particular the mention of the Royal connection through Lucy Carona. The first time that I heard that statement was from seeing the family tree from Cecelia M Johnson-Baguley. As far as I know Lucy Coroun (Corona), daughter of who knows?  was the wife of Hugh De Coroun of Adlynton
(Died 1291). Lucy then married Sir William de Baggiley. I would like to know how this doubtful parentage of Royalty came to be so widely proposed without any back up detail? I hope that you can shed some detail on this point. Barry

I apologize for any misinformation and misattribution on this page. I did say this was a work in progress. The info started with a file from Barry and he is right, that some of the information has nothing to do with him....................................ROD

Sorry to bug you. I just entered the Bigelow world today (he just sent me the e-mail today so I made a quick look at ancestry.com) with the help of a genealogist in New York where I was stuck. I have done a good amount of work in Cheshire over the past year on other lines and neither of the two standard texts-- Ormond or Earwacher say that Lucy is from Edward 1. History of Cheshire, page 654, Earwacher-- Lucy, daughter of-------, living a widow 10 Edw. 2. (qy. married 2dly, sir William Baggylegh, kt.). Her first husband was Hugh de Coroun. Where did you find that she is the daughter of Edw. 1?
more:
The family goes into De Hutton's---> De Lacy's ----> De Clare's. The De Lacy is the Constable of Cheshire. There is probably a legitamate royal tie-in along that route. I'll work it out after Christmas if you'd like and we'll see.

As an aside.  This is very interesting to me, because I come
from a long line of Marslands who were tenants at Baguley Hall through the
1700-1900's.
My folks began with  William Marsland.  And this has been the
only page I've ever found that has a history of the people who owned the Hall.
Now I have found another descendent of John Marsland 1791? who
wants to know more about the hall and I shall pass the web site address.

I, too, am a decendant of the Baguley and Bigelow families. My mother has done
a lot of research on our family and we have come to a discovery with the Lucas
family having ties to yours. If you are interested in the information, please
notify me and I will gladly provide you with such. I am very excited to hear
from you. Sincerely, Andrea Pendleton

Rod,

Hello. I recently saw your site on the Bigelow/Baguley family. I descend from this family, from Ellin Baguley who married John Leigh(Venables).
On your chart of the Descent of Baguley/Bigelow family in England (http://bigelowsociety.com/rod/baghist1.htm) you have Ellen as dau. of William, son of John, son of Ralph, son of Richard. On another part of your site (http://bigelowsociety.com/rod/baguley5.htm)you show this a bit differently. Could you confirm or deny the descent of Ellen as shown on the chart?
Also I see that you show Lucy/Lucia Corona as a dau. of Edw. II,not Ed.I as I would think by the dates,in one spot, but show Ed.I as her father in another. I gather you meant Ed. I in both areas.
I thought you'd be interested that Lucia also married Hugo de Corona (Jr.),who also married Anabell de Bamvill;Lucia had son Thos.de Corona with husb. Hugo de Corona (Jr.)(Ref.Visitation of Cheshire,1580,pedigree of "Pro Leigh de Lyme".
Sincerely,   Steve Aderholdt   Lutherville,Maryland
