 PETER McMENAMIN

Peter and Anna McMenamin came to Lyon Mountain in 1924. They were members of St. Bernard's Church until Mr. McMenamin retired in 1959. Pete had been employed in the Scranton, Pennsylvania office of the Hudson Coal Company. It was because of his ability and his education at Miner's Mechanical Institute and Lehigh University he was selected by the Hudson Coal Company to go to Lyon Montain and supervise construction of the Mill of the Chateaugay Ore and Iron Company, a subsidiary of the Hudson Coal Company. What began as a temporary assignment to re-build the Mill became his life's work. He remained as Chief Engineer of the company in Lyon Mountain and continued in that capacity after the Chateaugay Ore and Iron Company became a subsidiary of the Republic Steel Corporation.
He and his wife, Anna, were active in the affairs of St. Bernard's, especially the fund raising campaigns for remodeling and renovating the church under the administration of Reverend Benjamin H. Staie. Pete was always dedicated to making Lyon Mountain a better community.  He served as President of the School Board for several years.  He was a veteran of WWI, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in France and when WWII came he served his country and community in various civilian programs instituted for the war effort.
He retired from Republic Steel in 1959.  He and Anna went to Florida, not to relax in the sunshine, but to care for their seriously ill daughter and her family. They remained with Mary until his death in 1966. During his life God had blessed him with a great sense of humor and a real dedication to helping his fellow man. Anyone who really knew him loved him.
