I was researching information on Oliv epell as we have many paitings and letters and books written by olive pell. It seems my great grandmother Phoebe Harris was retained by the bigelow family as a governess and raised the bigelows children including Matlida, who went by Olive. My great grandmother was held in high regard by Olive and she cared for her until my great grandmothers death. We have a letter that should only be opened upon her death which she died in 1980 not 1971.

I was searching for information on Esau/Bigelow Arkansas online tonight and ran across the ArkPerry Rootweb site with a lot of messages concerning various people in Perry County including Mr. N.P. Bigelow for whom the town was renamed.  I saw that you had posted to this group and was very interested to read that Mr. Bigelow was an ancestor of yours.  I have lived in Bigelow for most of my life and have taught in the school system there for many years.  Several of the teachers are now interested in obtaining information on the history of Bigelow including information on the Fourche River Lumber Company which Mr. Bigelow headed.
We have found one picture purported to be of Mr. Bigelow as well as a bit of other information on him but not a whole lot!
I do have a couple of pictures of the beautiful two-story home that he lived in while the mill was still there.  As a child, I remember wandering through that house during the fourth of july picnics that were always held there.  One of my memories is of the enormous fireplace in the front room!  At least it seemed enormous to me as a child.  I also remember those very narrow back stairs from the kitchen area that we kids would sneak up.  Unfortunately I cannot find any really great shots of the exterior of the house nor any at all of the interior...sigh.  Sadly, it burned to the ground several years ago during the process of being renovated by a couple who had recently purchased it.
I and the other teachers would love to correspond with you about Mr. N.P. Bigelow if that is agreeable with you?  We would love to get a really good photo (which we would of course pay for!) of Mr. Bigelow for our school records.  We would even be happy with a scanned photo sent via email.  We would also like to know if you have any information about his time here in the town that was named after him.

Sincerely
Debra Morse

More from Debra:

I found the files at school and pictures we have of the "Legion Hut" as all of us grew up calling it.  It was originally the home that N. P. Bigelow had built for himself in the city of Bigelow. I also scanned a photo of the train depot that used to be here with the name Bigelow on the front of it.  The scan isn't the best because the original photo is in a book on Arkansas Railroads and it wasn't a very good quality shot in the book.
Apparently the original photo must have been in bad shape when the publishers got their hands on it.
