Charles J. Bigelow
Former Owner of Leominster News
Leominster --- Charles W. Bigelow, 95 years old, a lifelong
resident of Leominster, MA, died peacefully at home in the
presence of his wife, Barbara (Brown) Bigelow, and their children
on February 12th.
Charlie was born in Leominster on July
21, 1926, son of the late John H. and Ruth (Glasser) Bigelow.
Charles is survived by his wife of 72 years, Barbara; his brother
Donald
Bigelow and his wife Jackie; children Randy and Judy (Rutter)
Bigelow, Rhonda and Jim Malatos, Lynn Bigelow, Sharon and Carl
DiMassa and Scott and Beth (Boulay) Bigelow, all residing
within 3 miles of the family home. He also leaves seventeen
grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren all having been
the co-pilot on numerous trips around the yard on his John Deere
Gator. He also leaves many cherished nieces and nephews.
Charlie graduated from Leominster H.S.
class of 1944 and patriotically signed his draft papers for the
Army where he served in the Pacific Campaign
for 2 years during WWII. His lifelong career as a Leominster
business owner began at 5 years old (yes 5) hawking newspapers on
the street corner before school for Bell’s News Agency working
there through HS. Charlie continued working for the next owner
John Carberry. He learned the ins and outs of wholesale
distribution of newspapers, magazines and paperbacks. He bought
the business from Mr. Carberry and renamed it Leominster News.
Charlie was baptized and confirmed as an
American Baptist and later joined the Congregational Church in
North Leominster where he supported many of the Church’s
endeavors. He began the Church monthly suppers in the early 60’s
and as chief cook, the suppers continued for 6 more decades.
Charlie enjoyed many “Dad” roles, coaching and umpiring little
league, organizing yard games for the neighborhood kids,
overseeing Wednesday pickup basketball at the Church, and trekking
to the Cape for family vacation. He was alsoa lifetime
handicapper, a reluctant traveler, an avid Boston sports fan, with
the Red Sox as his favorite.
Charlie loved his God, his family, his
country and the opportunity to work hard to createa wonderful life
for his family. Even with the communication challenge of dementia
he often told Barbara he loved her.
Living through the depression and tough
times fostered his generous nature, as he always had a soft spot
for people who were down on their luck. Charlie touched the hearts
of so many people from paper boys and girls to little leaguers and
boy scouts as well as his children’s friends allof whom have fond
memories of his “humor”and his “matter of fact” comments. He will
be deeply missed by many, but we can take comfort knowing he is
now in heaven with his parents, and siblings, John and Elva
Bigelow, Edie and Gug Picucci and Roger and Ginny Bigelow,
brother-in- law Richard Brown and his wife Marylou, sons- in-law
Larry Despres and Matteo Ciccone, grand- son-in-law Scott Boulay
and nephew Mark and niece Donna.
The family would like to thank Trinity
Compassionate Care Company who provided amazing caregivers and
also Charlie’s granddaughters’ Sarah and Amanda who have been
invaluable in providing care with their RN skills and love for
their grandfather.
In lieu of flowers please make donations
to the American Diabetes Foundation and Kidney Fund or the charity
of one’s choice.
The funeral service will be held Friday February 18, 2022, at the
Congregational Church of Christ, 583 Main St, Leominster, MA
01453.
