I have just come across your Bigelow Society web site, and am interested
in some material.
During the past year I have been able to trace my line back to James
Bigelow (b 1762, MA , dc 1842 Wayne County, PA). I can document
back to
Edwin A. bc 1828 with b & d records and Edwins' CW discharge papers,
plus
census and a county history indication James Howe and James.
Does the Bigelow genealogy provide documentation and anecdotals, or
just
names and dates? Either way, I am interested in acquiring a copy.
Thanks for the good work in making the material available.I have been
working on my paternal line for several years.
My progenitor, Frederick Getman (1693-1781) arrived with the 1710 Palatine
immigration and settled in Stone Arabia in the Mohawk Valley. His
homestead in in Ephratah, Fulton County, and his descendants were in Fulton,
Montgomery and Herkimer counties until about 1820, when they began the
outward migration. I grew up in Binghamton. You may have come
across DAvid Martin (West Chazy) who has done a tremendous amount of research
on some of the Palatine families (Snell, Zimmerman) with which the Getmans
are connected.
My mother was born in Honesdale, Wayne County, was taken to be raised
in Binghamton by her grandparents at age two following her mother's death.
She was told very little about her background. All I knew were the
names
of her grandparents, Bigelow and Peck. The internet has been a boon
for genealogy. I have documented my
personal line back to Frederick, and have been databasing his descendants,
with the assistance of previously unknown "cousins" across the country.
After getting the Getman material in pretty good order, I began searching
my mother's lines. I can trace her grandparents back to Pleasant Mount
and to early settlers James Bigelow (1808) and Elijah Peck (c 1790).
My major sources have been the Goodrich, MAtthews and Whaley histories
of Mount Pleasant and
Wayne County and the various census records for Wayne County.
From these I have been putting together a tentative reconstruction of the
descendants of James Bigelow and Elijah Peck.
I have been living in Memphis, Tennessee, for several years, and need
to schedule my onsite visits in New York and Pennsylvania with care during
the time I am home each summer. In August I was able to be in Mount
Pleasant and located the Peck family homestead, with a Peck descendant
still on the farm. It is probably about a mile from the Bigelow
homestead. I hope to find the Bigelow homestead next summer.
Your material notes James and Mary buried in the Presbyterian cemetery.
Does it still exist? Have the gravestones been located? These
are my kin of questions.
I am looking forward to receiving and studying the Bigelow books, and
will probably have some questions after that time. It is good to
know that all Bigelows seem to find their roots in a common ancestor.
And I will be pleased to share what I find.
Best wishes in your work.

The Bible of Erwin and Carrie Bigelow was transcribed by Clyde J. Getman
