Sarah Bemis, dau of Joseph and Sarah ( ___ ) Bemis was born 15 Jan 1642/3 Boston, Of Watertown, Middlesex, MA; died 1712 Watertown, Middlesex, MA; and buried: 1712 Watertown, Middlesex, MA; she married 2 Oct 1694 Watertown, Middlesex, MA, John 1 Bigelow as his second wife and had no children.

Joseph BEMIS (father of Sarah) b Abt. 1618/9 Dedham, Essex, England; d 07 Aug 1684 Watertown, Middlesex, MA; m 1640? Watertown, Middlesex, MA, Sarah _____ . It is thought that Sarah was the second wife of Joseph. Joseph came to America in 1640 with his sister, Mary, who married William Hagar on 20 March 1644/5 in Watertown.

    3. Joseph Jr., b 28 Oct 1647, a twin; bur 4 Nov 1647.

    4. Ephraim, b 28 Oct 1647, a twin; bur 4 Nov 1647.

    5.  Martha, b 24 May 1649, unm. Admitted to Church on 25 Feb 1697/8. Died in middle age.

    6.Joseph jr., b 20 Dec 1651; d 7 Aug 1694 in Westminster, MA.

    7.Rebecca, b 17 Apr 1654; m (1) 11 Apr 1684 to John White. He died 30 May 1684 after being gored by a bull.     Rebecca m (2) 1 Apr 1686 to Thomas Harrington.

    8. Ephraim, b 25 Aug 1656 Watertown; d ____; m Elizabeth _____ ; had daughter Elizabeth Bemis who married Jonathan 3 Bigelow # 162;

    9. John, b Aug 1659; d 24 Oct 1732; m (1) ca 1680 to Mary Harrington; m (2) Mrs. Sarah Phillips; m (3) Mrs. Judith Barnard.

LDS has a Richard WILDSOW (AFN: 119W-CCW) married to Sarah Bemis on 23 Nov 1700 Watertown, , MA.There is much confusion on this Sarah Bemis as noted below.

Ephraim Bemis was born 25 August 1656 in Watertown, MA. After marrying Elizabeth, they moved to Windham and Hampton in Windham county, CT. He was living there in 1738. Ephraim was a private in Capt. Joseph Sylls Co. in King Phillip's War. Ephraim and Elizabeth ( ___ ) Bemis had 7 children. The first four were born in Watertown, MA. There is not absolute proof that the last three are their children, but much circumstancial evidence exists:

1. Elizabeth, bapt 1687; d 11 Jan 1734; m 7 Jun 1702 Jonathan 3 Bigelow # 162. Jonathan was b 22 Mar 1679, Watertown and m (2) Mary Rice.

2.  Sarah, bapt. 1687.

3.  Rebecca, b 16 Jan 1684/5.

4.  Abigail, b 10 Jan 1686/7; m 16 Sep 1708, Watertown to Stephen Pierce.

5.  Daniel, m Ruth, lived in Hampton, CT.

6.  James, lived in Windham, CT.

7.  Ephraim.


Notes from Bigelow Society Historian:
Sarah outlived her husband, John 1 Bigelow as his second wife.  She was daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth ( __ ) Bemis and sister of Ephraim Bemis whose daughter Elizabeth married Jonathan Bigelow, grandson of John Bigelow who had married secondly Sarah Bemis.

Greetings!  I found your name in the Roots Surname List, and I think we may have some interests in common.  I have a double Bigelow line in Watertown, Mass: John 1  (1617-1703)- Samuel 2 (1653-1732)- Mercy 3 (1686-1745), and John- Abigail  (1664-1754).  I suppose the most interesting question right now is who was the Sarah Bemis that immigrant
John 1 supposedly married in 1694: the widow of Joseph Bemis, or the daughter?  As far as I can tell, there is no evidence at all that the daughter lived past infancy, aside from Bond's assertion that she was the one who married John.  Can you shed any light on this?   John Chandler   jchbn@cuvmb.cc.columbia.edu
