Ira
Myrick
Ira Myrick's family home in Elysian, Minnesota, undated.
Various family members, too far away to be identified
1851: Ira, with his wife and 3 surviving children, migrated to
Wisconsin. He erected the first frame building in La Crosse
and remained there 3 years. He was elected Treasurer of La
Crosse County in 1853, but resigned because he was moving to
MN. He first built a sawmill near Le Sueur, but later moved it
to Elysian, where he was in the lumber business. He was County
Commisioner and Justice of the Peace.
1852: The village of Le Sueur was first surveyed and laid out.
It was not actually incorporated until 9 March 1867. A social
hall, called Strong's Hall was put up in 1852, possibly by Ira
Myrick (though he was not supposed to have arrived until the
following year). There people gathered for entertainment of
all kinds; programs, spelling bees, dances, and so on. In 1853
this building became known as Myrick's Hotel. On the first
floor was a boat landing, a warehouse and store. On the second
floor was a tavern or hotel.
1853: Ira Myrick came to Le Sueur. He had a sawmill, and built
and operated a combined freight warehouse, store and hotel at
the lower landing of the river, NW of the present Green Giant
plant. The building was later moved to George Tousley's
property north of the house at 1329 N. Commerce. It became a
barn with hardwood floors. It was the oldest building in town
till it burned in 1922. K. K. Peck built the first hotel in Le
Sueur, called Peck's Hotel. It stood on the SE corner of
Commerce and Dakotah Streets.
1854: North of Peck's tavern, on the NE corner of Commerce and
Dakotah, Ira built the second hotel/tavern, which was still
operating in 1874.
The first Le Sueur County Courthouse was a frame building to
the east of Myrick's. When it burned during those early years,
Myrick's hall became the courtroom. It probably continued to
function in that capacity until the courthouse was moved to
the Smith building on the NW corner of Ferry & Main, which
was built in 1868.
1862: Ira was a Charter member of Union Lodge #45 of the
Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, organized 20 May. The first
meeting was in Myrick's Hall, north of Tousley Ferry, on the
NW corner of Division and Commerce Streets.
1870: Ira moved from Le Sueur to Elysian, MN.
Jan 1884: Elysian village was incorporated. Ira Myrick was
elected Justice of the Peace.
Elysian Enterprise, 2-28-1902:
The death of Mr. Ira Myrick occurred Tuesday evening at a few
minutes before seven o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs.
S. L. Goodall, with whom he had made his home since the death
of his wife about three years ago. The immediate cause of
death was heart failure, with which affliction he had been
troubled for some time having been confined to his bed the
greater part of the winter. Mr. Myrick was born at Westport,
N. Y., December 2, 1820, being 81 years old at his death. He
was one of the very early settlers of the village, having
located in Elysian in the year 1870, and was a citizen who had
taken an active interest in the up building of the village in
its earlier history. Three children survive him, Mr. S. L.
Goodall and Miss Abbie Myrick of this place, and Rush L.
Myrick of Duluth. The funeral was held Thursday morning from
the Episcopal church, the service being conducted by Rev.
Krickmer.
