Noah 6 BIGELOW

15337.1      Noah 6 BIGELOW, son of Noah 5( Cornelius 4, Samuel 3, Samuel 2, John1 and Catherine (SHAY) BIGELOW, was born in Westborough, Worcester county, MA, 29 June 1766, as listed in town records. The family moved to Hampshire county, some years later, and due to the mother's death, his father remarried in 1778. According to his own statement in later years, Noah Jr was living in Pelham, MA in 1781, and ran away from home during haying season to enlist in the 4th Regiment, Massachusetts line, and served six months in 1781.
His next few years are blank, but by 1790 he was living in Woodford, Bennington county, VT, with himself, a wife, and two boys under age 16. In 1800, still at Woodford, his family had increased, with the children totaling one male between 1-l6, one male and 3 females under age 10.
Noah married, before 1790, but at unknown date and place, Cynthia Scott (see below). He is the same person who is listed as Silas Bigelow on page 469 of Howe's Bigelow Family of America; this has been proved beyond doubt by the NSDAR application of his great-granddaughter Mrs. Laura Cole. Howe's Bigelow genealogy states that Noah died circa 1800. However, he served as town hayward in 1803. The writer believes that it was Noah's wife who died, perhaps as late as 1805, and that the family was broken up by her death, with younger children raised by relatives. Noah jr disappears from Vermont records before 1810, and some years later (1819) appears in Chenango county, New York.
In Chenango county in 1819 Noah Bigelow jr applied for a Revolutionary War pension, but was rejected because his discharge papers were missing. In 1820 he was ennumerated at Oxford, Chenengo county on the census, but by 1830 had moved to Leicester, Livingston county. Here he re-applied for a pension in 1831, and was granted $58.31 per year. On the application, he gave his birthdate and place correctly, leaving no doubt that he was Noah Bigelow jr.
Noah remained in Leicester some years, being listed there again in 1840 as a pensioner. But in March 1844, presumably when his sons began migrating westward, Noah next appeared before a justice-of-the-peace in Barre, Orleans county, NY. He stated he had lived in Barre six days, and was the same Noah Bigelow who had been receiving a pension in Livingston county, and he authorized either Elijah Cobb or attorney Hiram Prentice to collect his pension for him. He signed in a semi-literate, shaky hand. He was 78 years of age. Henry L. Bigelow witnessed the document. There is no further record of payment, and we presume Noah's death soon after the date of Mar 1844.
Judging from census records, he had a fair-sized family. The Bigelow genealogy identifies three children who remained in
Vermont. Two sons migrated to the midwest. Daughters have proved impossible to trace.

15337.15 Noah Scott Bigelow son of Noah Bigelow and Cynthia Scott born about 1800 in Woodford, Bennington, VT. Is Cynthia Scott the daughter of Matthew Scott and Sarah Snow Scott of Woodford, Bennington, VT? You also list Cynthia
Scott's brother as Matthew Scott (son of Matthew and Sarah Scott) who served in war of 1812. Cynthia Scott was born June 8, 1775. Do you have any further information on Noah Bigelow and Cynthia Scott??
More:
Thanks for hooking me up to the Bigelow site. I have done a large amount of research on the Scott family name. My father is Thomas Scott Cadden. I was able to obtain some excellent documentation on our Scott line. "The Descendants of William Scott of Hatfield, Mass., 1668---1906 by Orin Peer Allen, Published 1906 on page 39 lists children of Matthew Scott and his wife Sarah (maiden name???) Scott all born in Bennington, VT. They are as follows:
                  1. Zerah, b. Oct 9, 1765
                  2. Noah, b. June 5, 1768
                  3. Sarah Snow, b. December 11, 1772
                  4. Cynthe, b. June 8, 1775
                  5. Matthew, b. Nov. 24, 1781
                  6. Jonathan, b. Dec 24, 1784
This family moved to Woodford, VT by Feb 11, 1789. Zerah Scott as listed above is my direct connection. He served in the Rev War and has an extensive pension file with Bible records and many certified letters.
The town of Bennington, VT also has the birth records for the above listed children. I believe that Zerah Scott's sister Cynthia Scott is the correct match for Noah Bigelow. If Noah Jr. was later brought up by Cynthia Scott's brother Matthew Scott this would be of further note. The Bigelows are listed on the same Census record as the Scott family on Bennington co, VT 1790
Census.(page 24). Hope this is of some interest.
One other good possibility is that the Cynthia Scott married to Noah Bigelow Jr., is the daughter of Noah Scott who was Zerah Scott's brother. Noah Scott was the son of Matthew Scott.
Thanks Tim C.

To follow-up on previous information. I have been researching the Scott family line with Tyler Resch the Bennington, VT Museum Librarian. Town records show that Cynthia Scott, the daughter of Matthew Scott and Sarah Scott, was born June 8, 1775. Cynthia Scott married Noah Bigelow about 1796 and they had three children, Silas Pomeroy Bigelow, Noah Scott Bigelow and Sally Bigelow. Cynthia Scott Bigelow's younger brother Matthew Scott, who eventually raised Noah Scott Bigelow, was born November 24, 1781 in Bennington, VT to Matthew Scott and Sarah Scott.
I thought you might be interested in this information.
Great job on Bigelow family line.
Sincerely, Tim Cadden
