Gideon 6 BIGELOW

1592C.5      Gideon 6 BIGELOW, son of Amasa 5 ( Isaac 4, Isaac 3, Samuel 2, John1 and Rosina (CONE) BIGELOW, was born 22 Sep 1781 Cornwallis, Kings county, Nova Scotia. He was a ship's carpenter, and followed the sea the first part of his life. In the 1820's he moved to Richland county, OH, settling near Shelby. Family tradition says that he married twice, and had a daughter by his first wife, but this is unproved. He married (2?) circa 1829 or 1830, Mrs. Mary McCart, widow of Henry McCart, and mother of eleven McCart children. She was born 28 Mar 1785, and died 20 Aug 1850 in Bloomingdale, Richland county, OH. She was aged 65 years, 4 months, and 23 days, according to her headstone. Gideon remained on the census through 1860, after which we find no trace of him through probate or cemetery record.
In 1830 he and his wife Mary McCart figured in a chancery suit, when they sued her McCart in-laws on behalf of her McCart children, for property that she felt was theirs. All of her McCart children are named in the suit. Later several of the McCarts moved to Walworth county, WI; her youngest daughter, Amy McCart, married Gideon's nephew Daniel Bigelow jr.

In 1971 I received a letter from Ralph DAVISON answering a HOOSIER ANCESTORS query on ROBEY:
"Wm. H. McCART was b.1801. He was the son of Henry McCART, pioneer settler in Richland and Ashland counties, OH,
near the Indian village of Greentown. (Henry was previously from Knox county OH; also KY, PA, VA.)
Wm. H. McCART 1st.m.Sarah Jane BIGELOW; they had four children. Sarah Jane died young. Wm. H. came back from WI to OH and 2nd.m. Patsy Ann ROBEY; they had eight children. I have found the graves of Wm. H. and Patsy Ann McCART in WI. (Ralph also said he had just published The Pioneer McCART Family.)"
I hope this will be beneficial to someone's BIGELOW research.

Bigelow Society notes says Sarah Jane m John McCart:
"She married her step brother, John McCart and they lived in Fairfield Co., OH."
