George N. Bigelow, September 1855 - July 1866
State Normal School at Framingham for eleven years
George Bigelow was the first layman to fill the role of Principal of the Normal School.
Bigelow added new courses and increased the content in existing courses.
Advanced training in foreign languages as well as in English literature, modern history, and higher mathematics
were added for the graduate students. Student enrollment, which previously had been on the wane, began to increase,
slowly at first, and then more rapidly due to the demand for teachers during the Civil War.
In 1864, the Principal and six assistants were teaching 173 women. George Bigelow became gravely ill in 1865.

15327.74 George Norman ⁷ BIGELOW, son of Silas ⁶ ( Ithamar ⁵, Samuel ⁴, Samuel ³, Samuel ², John ¹) and Sophia (LAMB) BIGELOW, was born 14 January 1823 at Paxton, Worcester, MA. On 25 November 1856 he married Frances Louise Babcock, daughter of Rev. Elisha and Eliza (Hubbard) Babcock. She was born 01 June 1836 at Thetford, VT and died at Framingham, MA 31 December 1863 (see below). He married (2) Fannie Whitcomb, daughter of Elbridge G. and Salome (Newcomb) Whitcomb, at Keene, NH 06 December 1866. She was born 04 September 1845. George Norman was well known in educational and literary circles. Early he had gone abroad to study at the University of Berlin and on his return received the degree of Master of Arts from Brown University. He was principal of schools both in MA and NY. He was principal of the High School at Clinton, MA for a few years; and the principal of the State Normal School at Framingham for eleven years. In 1868, he went to Brooklyn, NY where he and his brother John F. (15327.71) opened the "Atheneum", a young ladies seminary. After his brother retired, (1880), he ran the school alone until he died 28 August 1887 at Brooklyn. (Professor George Norman Bigelow was also well known as a contributor to magazines on educational topics.)

My name is Benjamin Ford. I very much appreciated finding your Bigelow website, as I've been wondering about George Norman Bigelow, whom you list as
15327.74   George Norman 7 BIGELOW, son of Silas 6 ( Ithamar 5 , Samuel 4, Samuel 3, Samuel 2, John 1)...
He and my GG Aunt Fanny Whitcomb were apparently married in Keene, NH. I've seen information about their children in the Ancestry World Tree which I am sure is in error, as in:
1 Fanny WHITCOMB b: 1826
         + George Norman BIGELOW b: ABT. 1825
           2 Jonas Fred BIGELOW b: 1848
           2 Frank Herbert BIGELOW b: 28 FEB 1850
             + Grace Amanda NIMS
           2 Edward Everette BIGELOW b: 1852

First of all, Charlotte Whitcomb's book, "The Whitcomb Family in America", shows Fanny as born 4 Sep 1845, not 1826, and states she married George H. Bigelow (no date; I'd guess the "H." is a transcription error). No further information on George or Fanny, but Jonas, Frank and Edward are her siblings, not her children, and are surnamed Whitcomb. I know this is true because Frank Herbert Whitcomb is my G Grandfather, who married Grace Amanda Nims.
I'm wondering if you have any more information about George and Fanny? Did they have any children together? Did she help raise Frances Eulalia Bigelow? I find it curious that according to your facts Fanny and George married 3 years before his first wife Frances Louise Babcock died. I would appreciate any information you have. Thanks in advance.

reply: Howe gave date of death for Frances Babcock as 1863, but transfer to Vol II became 1869.................................ROD
