Charles Eli 8 BIGELOW

16314.493          Charles Eli 8 Bigelow, son of  Roderick D. 7 ( Ira 6 , Ezra 5 , David 4, Lt. John 3, Joshua 2, John 1) BIGELOW and Sabrina (UTTER) BIGELOW, was born at Troy, Bradford co, NY in 1826 (17 December 1827). He married Kate E. Spencer (see below) (Jackson?) in Iowa about 1840 and was divorced by 1860. Charles and Kate went west in an ox-drawn covered wagon in 1853. Their oldest son Eli was 12 years old. He and his younger brother Ed had a grand time on the way out, hunting and fishing and gathering wild berries. They had no Indian problems. Their mother Kate, was the type of pioneer woman who was a practical nurse and doctor. The Indians greeted the wagon train everywhere with sick folk for Kate to dose and poultice.
They arrived in California and lived in the Mother Lode country in the gold rush days. They got to know Fremont and other celebreties in that area of the country. Charles did not like California, or was homesick or something, and decided to take the family back east. Kate said he could go, but we are staying here. He went, and that seems the last that was heard of him. Of course, he may have remarried there and started a new line of Bigelows. Charles died 12 October 1895 San Francisco, CA (obit below)
Kate and the the two boys moved to Potter Valley in Mendocino county, CA. They took up land there, and she later married John Endicott. They had one daughter Fanny. Fanny Endicott married twice; m (1) George Ristine, and m (2) John Hergesheimer. Fanny had a daughter, Kate Ristine, and two or more boys Eli and Andrew and ??. The lived for many years in the "Big Bend" country in Washington on the Columbia River. .................Kate died and is buried in Potter Valley, but headstone or record not found.
New info: They must have gotten together as Charles.Eli and Kate came to Calif. in 1853 with the boys by wagon train. They were divorced in 1859 as Kate married John B. Endicottt on Jan. 1, 1860 in Placerville, CA. Charles Eli married Ximenia Jackson with whom he had 3 children, Judge Talmage Bigelow, Nellie Aruhu Bigelow and Charles Eli Bigelow.. I haven't tried to find any of their history.

Kate E. Spencer in IA and div. by 1860 when she m John Endicott; at one time, Charles, res. Sawyer's Bar, CA. This is an interesting family to follow in the 1850 census  Elizabeth (Betsy), for instance, is enumerated in her father's household in Johnstown, Rock, WI on 12 Aug. Ten days earlier, she was counted in the Rockwell family home at Jefferson, WI and on one count, (with no date), she is counted in the home of her brother, James L.'s inlaws, along with her brother, Charles E. He was counted twice - in two different households.

Re: Charles Eli Bigelow
In browsing Ancestry.com, I found an error regarding Charles Eli Bigelow. I am pretty sure the information came from you as I was given the same data from you in the 1990's, and was told you received it from one of his brother's family in Sawyers Bar, CA. First of all Charles Eli was the seventh child of ten children from Roderick and Sabrina Utter Bigelow (16314.49). He was born 15 Feb 1822 in Tory, Bradford Co., PA, and died 12 Oct 1895 in the city and county of San Francisco, CA.
I am having a difficult time finding much of his first marriage. It may have been in Eire? (Erie), N.Y., to a woman known to us as Kate (possibly Catherine, Katherine or Cathleen). You and ancestry.com have her last name as Jackson but that is his second wife's maiden name and it is doubtful both had the same maiden name. I believe her to be a Spencer as her first son was Eli Spencer Bigelow, and his second son was Charles Spencer Bigelow, and my uncle (son of the E.S.) was Wilfred Spencer Bigelow. The first son, Eli Spencer Bigelow was born 21 April 1841 in NY, died 08 June 1919 in Bishop, Inyo Co., CA. , married Mary Beck 29 Nov 1877 in Windsor, Sonoma Co., CA the second son, Edwin Bigelow born circa 1843 is an enigma to me. Searching the 1850 census, we find C.E. and Kate living apart. C. E. is in both Iowa and Wisconsin. I am not sure where Kate and the boys are, but I think with a Bigelow brother in Wisconsin. At any rate they must have gotten together as C.E. and Kate came to Calif. in 1853 with the boys by wagon train. They were divorced in 1859 as Kate married John B. Endicottt on Jan. 1, 1860 in Placerville, CA. Charles Eli married Ximenia Jackson with he had 3 children, Judge Talmage Bigelow, Nellie Aruhu Bigelow and Charles Eli Bigelow.. I haven't tried to find any of their history.
Obit from S.F. Examiner 10/14/1895, pg 97 "aged 67 years, 9 mo., and 25 days. Obit from Arcata Union 10/19/1895; "at his residence, 1304 Pine street, S.F., at 10pm last Saturday of Brights' disease, Chas. E. Bigelow, a former well known resident of this city. ... He moved from Sawyers Bar in 1862 to Arcata and 1863 came to Eureka, where he engaged in blacksmithing. A few years later he invented a surgical truss, and in 1887 moved to S.F. where he was engaged in the manufacture of the truss up to the time of his death. Deceased was a native of Bradford, Pa. aged about 68 years, and was the husband of X.C.Bigelow and father of J. Talmage Bigelow and Nellie Boosen of Petaluma.
