Looking for Hiram BIGELOW and his wife, Betsy Brown, from the area of Worcester Co.,  MA. Their daughter, Aulinda BIGELOW, married Dexter BALDWIN in Spencer, Worcester Co.,  MA on 08 April 1847.  A Rev. Levi PACKARD performed the service. I have no other information on these BIGELOWS. Dexter BALDWIN was born 02 Sept. 1818 to Benjamin and Betsey BALDWIN in Leichester, Worcester Co., MA. This is my direct line. Will gladly exchange information.
One minor correction. You show they lived in Erie, KS. Actually they homesteaded to Section 3 of  Centerville Township, Neosho Co., KS. Their descendants still live around there and in Erie, the county seat of Neosho Co., KS.  I visited there again last summer. I believe I took a picture of their graves. They are buried in the Grant-Brown Cemetery in Centerville Township. Dexter died in 1889. Aulinda died in 1880.
More from Anna Bertram:
Comments: I am the 5th great-granddaughter of Enoch BIGELOW of Charlton, MA, USA. In Dec. 1998 I casually visited your web site and copied off some Bigelow information for the future. Imagine my delight today when I found it again. Since my initial visit I have decided to join D.A.R. and this gives me a big start in obtaining the proof I need to go in on Enoch Bigelow. Thank you for your serious, and very diligent work!

More from a descendant of Aulinda Bigelow and Dexter Baldwin "They settled in Neosho County, Kansas, near the town of Erie.  They are listed on page 374 of Howe’s Bigelow Genealogy book. They are my second-great-grandparents. If you or the society would like to have the line of descent from them I will gladly furnish it. I believe I also have pictures  of their headstone and an interesting story or two about them.

As of this date no inscribed tombstone has been identified, although her son, Carl Everett Aldrich, his wife Ethel, and daughter Ruth, are buried there. She also had a daughter named Ada J. Aldrich, born about 1868 in Massachusetts.

Henry Nelson Baldwin

16252.1322     Henry Nelson 9 Baldwin son of Aulinda (8) Bigelow, (Hiram(7), Phillip(6), Enoch(5), James(4), Jonathan(3), Joshua(2), John(1) and Dexter Baldwin, was born 04 Sep 1859, Spencer, Worcester Co., Massachusetts and died 3 May 1928 in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., Kansas.  He married first, Esther S. Burket on 30 Aug 1875 in Kansas, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Adams) Burket.  She was born 08 Feb 1855 in Findlay, Hancock Co., Ohio and died October 1946 in Galesburg, Neosho Co., Kamsas.  He married second about 1924 to Ada Overall.
Henry was a Mason, a respected member of the community and a loving father. Sometime after his youngest child was married in 1911 Henry left his wife of many years. Today we would say it was on grounds of incompatibility. Divorce was not common in those days so the family looked upon it as a disgrace. His ex-wife and children were bitter about his leaving.

He eventually remarried. His second wife was a widow named Ada Overall. When Henry died in the Masonic Hospital in Wichita his youngest daughter went there by train to take his body back to Erie, Neosho Co., Kansas. She buried him in the Erie Cemetery, not where his ex-wife and mother of his children had been buried. For many years he did not have a marker other than an evergreen tree his son-in-law , Harry C. Hunt, set out at the head of his grave. Finally before his youngest child died a small inscribed marker was placed on his grave at the insistence of his son-in-law.

16251.13425   R51749, Berch Louie Baldwin, daughter of Henry Nelson, (Aulinda (Bigelow), Hiram, Phillip, Enoch, James, Jonathan, Joshua, John) and Esther (Burket) Baldwin, was born 11 November 1891 at Neosho co., KS and died 09 July 1985 in Anderson, McDonald co., MO.  She married Harry Clay Hunt, March 17, 1911 in Neosho co., KS, son of John and Martha (Baldwin) Hunt.  He was born 03 June 1888 in Neosho co., KS and died February 24 1976 in Parsons, Labette co., KS.  Harry Clay Hunt was brought up on a Kansas farm.  Her he learned he didn't want to be a farmer!  He became a school teacher, later a banker, and then an abstractor.  He was known for his honesty and stead-fastness.  He met his wife, Berch Louie Baldwin, a distant cousin, while taking refresher courses at a teacher's college in KS. For some time after their marriage they both taught school in Neosho co., KS.  Harry at the school Berch had attended, and she at the school Harry had attended.  They were born and grew up about seven miles apart but never met until teacher's college.
She was given an unusual gift for her 8th birthday. It was the opportunity for her to select her middle name. Years later she used to exclaim she had no idea how or why she came up with the name Louie when there were so many beautiful names from which to choose!

She attended a one room school house, graduating at age 16. That is when she began her apprentice teaching in Neosho County at Doane School. After teaching a couple of years in a one room school house similar to the one she had attended as a girl she went to Emporia to attend a course of study at the Teacher's Normal School. (It was something like a teachers college.) There she roomed with Miss Zella Fought, also from Neosho County, and who later married her brother, Harry Baldwin. Also while Berch was at Emporia she met Harry Clay Hunt as they were waiting in line to get a drink of water. They had been born and reared about 8 miles apart in Neosho county but had never met until then. They married in Neosho County, Kansas on March 17, 1911 when she was 19 and he was 22. Their marriage lasted until his death, over 60 years later. Two children were born of this union: Glenn Baldwin Hunt and Martha Esther Hunt.

She was well known and respected in her community as a school teacher and later as the sales lady for Prestige Silverware. Her wonderful cooking was legendary, especially her fried chicken, yeast breads, and pies. She had a saying for everything and she especially loved stories with morals. Children of all ages loved her.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches and loving favour rather than silver and gold. [Proverbs 22:1]
