Edward's House, is located at 13 Bigelow
Road and not visible from the road. There is a long driveway, west of
the driveway for the Bigelow Homestead, that leads to this house. It is
also called the Staple's House. It was built in 1870, perhaps earlier,
and is a 2 1/2 story frame building. It is Italianate in style and has
an elevated location overlooking the Hudson River. (see above). The
front of the house faces west, and contains a door at the southeast
corner of this facade with a transom. There is a
nice detailed screened Italianate porch along the first floor of this
facade.
The present owner added a new balcony above this porch in 2000.
The house has a gabled roof with the flared
cornice at the ends which characterizes many local houses of this
Italianate style. The windows have simple rectangular moldings. There
is at least one set of shutters on the house. There is a brick chimney
in the back of the house. The rear of the house has a one-story
extension, also with flared eaves,
and a cast iron chimney above the gable. There is an enclosed entry
with
aq shed roof between the main house and this extension. The doors on
the
main house appear to be original. There are various types of windows on
the
house and its extensions.
The site includes a remarkable assemblage of
outbuildings, which step down the hill leading from the house on a high
promontory to
Bigelow Road. These barns are attached, but may have been free standing
in the past.

Pahnke Notes:
Edward
Bigelow and brother David entered and carried on their father's
business "Blue Stone", which was quarried from along the Hudson River
quarries and sent down river to New York City by barge. The sidewalks
of NYC were all paved with this Blue Stone, where they remained for
many years. Eventually they were removed and stored, being replaced
with more modern "Black Top"?? The Blue Stone slabs were eventually
sold to the Marymount Monastery, Tarrytown, Westchester co, NY, to pave
their cloister and court yard. They remain there today.
Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York was founded December 8, 1907.
The Bigelow firm was known as E & D Bigelow for many years. Janis
also took notes from Bigelow Bible below.
"My" Edward (7) was the son of Asa 6( David 5, David 4, Lt. John 3, Joshua 2, John 1). He married 07 June 1853 in Meriden, CT , Mary Ann (or Amelia) Boies, b. 06 May 1826, Blandford, MA, d. 09 November 1901, Bloomfield, NJ.
According to our family history, my Great Grandfather Dr. Edward Field Walker (04 Feb 1846 - 02 Apr 1916) married twice, both times to Bigelows! His first wife was Caroline Boies Bigelow (no dates). They had 2 children Clarence Read (09 Aug 1870 - 17 FEB 1881) and Edith (24 July 1872). His second marriage was to Katherine Boies Bigelow (26 Apr 1850 - 31 Aug 1937 in Providence RI), sister of Caroline, and they had 2 children; Caroline Lydia (03 Sep 1880 - 04 Feb 1927) and Edward Field Walker Jr. (25 Dec 1883 - 25 Nov 1972). This last was my Grandfather.
Hope this helps. Anything that you might have on this Edward's (7) children would be appreciated. Also, if you have any knowledge of Lucy Isham's ancestry (wife of Asa(6) above, I would appreciate it. Thanks
