Blue Gray Line

From: Belinda Kent      BKwendy@aol.com
Hello,
My name is Belinda Kent and I have done some research on the Bigelow Cemetery in Madison Co.  Our Kents are buried there.  I have discovered that the people in the cemetery are related to the Samuel Kent and Desire Cushman Kent family.  I found her Bible records in the Union Co. OGS, which I will send to you.  Everyone in the cemetery are related and related to the Kents from her Bible records.  Desire Cushman was the first white grand daughter born in the US.  She was grand daughter of the Howlands that came over on the Mayflower.  I believe my research is starting to prove that most of the people buried in the cemetery may be descendants of the settlers of Plymouth Colony.  I have discovered some stones that were not recorded , such as Tinkham. Which is also a name from the colony.  I have been researching our Kent line for two years.  I may have made mistakes, who doesn't.  I have not put everything I have found in my files yet.  This letter is to help you be aware that there is a very good possiblilty that we come from Plymouth Colony Descendants.  Our Kents are buried there and most also be related to Hannah Kent.  If you look at my notes you may start to see the connections. You may need to do a liitle more research because I have not sent you everything.  I can tell you off hand that Lucinda Kent married E.W.Barlow whom was first married to a Bigelow.  They had a daughter and his first wife died. He then married Lucinda , whom was the daughter of Hiram Kent who is buried in the cemetery.  Lucinda had a brother Cicero.  That is our line.  Our line is as follows: James Kent from VA Silas Kent from NJ married Olive West from Conn. Hiram Kent from Franklin Co. OHio married Maranda(Miranda) Harrington Cicero Kent from Ohio married Margaret Morford Albert Kent from Madison Co. married Edith Poling Roy Kent from Madison Co. married Hazel Hildreth Donald Dean Kent from Ohio married Shirley Elleman    still living Dwight Dean Kent born in Logan Co. Ohio married Belinda Lambour our sons Kyle David Kent married Jaclyn Sewall Michael Dean Kent not married.

I am sending three emails with three files.  This one is the Bigelow Research. see bigkent.htm ; bigcem1.htm ; and .............................ROD

Notes from Belinda Kent:
I have researched many of the names from this page and found they are related to the people buried in the Old Bigelow Cemetery in Madison Co. Ohio.
Silas Kent, Hiram Kent , Rolston Kent, Addie E. Kent and Charlie Kent are buried in Bigelow Cemetery.  There fore it is my conclusion that Silas Kent’s father whom was James Kent was a descendant of Samuel G. Kent.  Our family branches from Hiram Kent , buried in the Old Bigelow Cemetery on Rosedale Road just off of 161.
I have also discovered that Samuel G. Kent married Desire Cushman , the first grand daughter of the United States.  A grand daughter to the Howlands that came over on the Mayflower.  The people buried in Bigelow Cemetery are descendants of the first Plymouth Colony.
I have been researching the people buried in Bigelow Cemetery, (now a state nature preserve) and our Kent family line as well as the people from this Bible page.  They are all related to each other.

Richard Kent came from England and into Massachusetts and this was Samuel G. Kents first relative to enter the United States.

There may be some more information in Delaware co. on this family .
James
came in to the Ohio in about 1806-7. The family moved around a little
first.
They lived in Greene, and Montgomery and Union or Franklin counties.
James
had a son named Silas who with Olive West had 13 children.  I have
mostly
recorded his son Hiram's line, which is ours.  Hiram raised some of
his
siblings, because Silas died fairly young.  Olive, Silas's wife,
moved to
Iowa in abt. 1840. Moses Fullington raised Silas Kent's twins.
Daniel ,
Silas's youngest son also lived in Iowa.  He was a war veteran and
recorded
our family history starting with James in the L.Vernon Briggs book.
I have
recently made contact with some of Elijah Kent's family, another one
of Silas
Kent's sons.  Well, here is what I have found.  Belinda Kent

****Biography from The History of Union County Ohio by W.H. Beers 1883 – Darby Township
Hiram Kent-farmer, P.O. Unionville Center, is the fourth child of Silas and Olive (West) Kent, natives of New Jersey and Connecticut, respectively, who came to Ohio in 1807 and located in Franklin Co., where they were among the early pioneers.  Our subject was born in Franklin Co., in 1807, about three months after his family arrived at their western home.  The family subsequently removed to Greene Co., and from there to Montgomery Co., where they remained until Hiram attained the age of thirteen years, when they moved to Madison County and settled on Darby Plains.  They subsequently moved to Union County and settled on a farm now owned by George Caldwell, which they afterward sold, and purchased in the same township another farm, upon which the father passed the rest of his life, dying in the fifty-sixth year of age.  His wife afterward moved to Appanoose County, Iowa, where she died.  They raised a family of thirteen children, seven of whom are living.  He was a man of quiet, unostentatious habits, who had no aspirations for political honors and gave his entire time to the pursuits of private life.  The subject of this sketch remained at home until April 16,1829, when he was married, on the home place, by Rev. Samuel Bradford, to Miss Miranda Harrington, who was born at East Montpelier, Vermont, Nov.8, 1807. To them was born seven children, of whom two survive: Cicero and Lucinda. The former married Margaret J. Morford and had five children, three sons and two daughters.  The latter is the wife of E.W. Barlow.   Mr. Kent settled on the farm now occupied by him in 1838. It consists of 162acres of valuable land.  His advantages for education  in early life were limited, and thorough Republican in politics, and for thirty years has been a member of the Masonic order.  His wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

+++++++Obituary for Margaret J. Morford Kent (Housewife)
Margaret Jane Morford was born Aug, 1841; died March 6, 1913. She married to Cicero Kent March 3, 1864. To this union was given six children.  One passed away in infancy.  The two daughters and two sons being in the far west.  She joined the M.E. church at Plain City in 1863, always remaining faithful to her chosen belief and attending to her duties as a member when convenient.  One of our truest and best friends has fallen, but we should not say fallen, only laid down her armor and passed on up higher to her reward for work faithfully done.  She was a devoted Christian, a faithful wife and a loving mother.  Her life was one of uprightness and devotion to those around her and her influence was much felt in the community, but nowhere so much as in her home and among her loved ones.  But her place here is vacant and that fact makes our lives more lonely, knowing that we too, shall pass the same path that has been trod by so many before, but we must be comforted with the thought that the loss is only adding to the attraction of the other side where our loved ones have gone.  She was a brave, conscientious and broad-minded helper, always willing a stranger to help, not only to bear another’s burdens but with that kind look, word and smile which goes a long way to cheer another’s sorrows.  As to a living person whose will is to be its law, whose love is to be its life, so Godliness in the devotion of the soul of our sister.  She was a true helpmate, full of sympathy, devotion and unbounded energy, often going many times beyond her strength.  She had endeared herself to scores of people so that those who would comfort her were themselves comforted.  A visit with her was often times better than a sermon.  The fragrance of her memory will ever remain in the heart of those who knew her.  Words fail to sum up the life of energy and meekness, firmness and tenderness, sterling honor and congeniality, compassion and purity.  Devoted as a wife, companionable as a mother, true as a friend, we shall all miss her.

The Bible records of Hannah Kent can be posted. You may post my Kent
file ,
but I would start with James Kent from Va.  I am still trying to find
the
link between James and Josiah Kent, Hannah Kent Gray's brother.  I am
sure
they will connect.  You may post the people in Bigelow Cemetery.  I
however
did my research in a two week time frame and I could have made a
mistake or
two on the parents of the people buried there.  Many times the
records in the
books and the tombstone have different names.  For instance, Sabin is
what is
on the stone.  Sabine is in the history books.  Did they run out of
room on
the stone? or Did the person writing the book mis spell the name.  Or
did the
person taking a record mis spell a name?  Or did the family change
the
spelling?  I have searched thru books and online for a lot of that
material.
I also have a old family register on our Kent line.  I guess , my
fear is
that sometimes I found the material online.  I have put it in my
notes that I
found it on the computor.  If so, I would be leary of posting it.  I
have
tried to contact some of those people and my emails would not go thru
or my
letters were not answered.  I believe that our line did come from
Richard and
that James Kent's father or  grandfather was most likely Josiah Kent,
Hannah's brother.
Did you have any information on the Kent family buried at the
Bigelow
Cemetery?  I can't tell you how excited I was to figure out that many
of the
people buried in the cemetery are related to the Gray and Taylors
that were
listed in the Bible records of Hannah Kent Gray.
I found it interesting that names like Tinkham, Wood, King and
Smith,
are all names from the Plymouth Colony.  Knowing that the Howlands
came over
on the Mayfower and that Desire Cushman was their grand daughter was
a great
find.  I also read that the Smith's buried there are the descendants
fo the
first preacher of the first colony, Plymouth Colony.   The Tinkham
stone was
not recorded as well as a few others I found.  The cemetery is not in
good
shape.  It is a state nature preserve and the prarie grass is
destroying the
stones.  I called Jeff Johnson, the person in charge of the cemetery
and he
burnt off the grass.  He and I went in and  photographed the stones.
We
discovered that many of the stones are not in the right place.  I
believe
there are many more people buried there and they have not been
recorded.  I
think we would find stones under the dirt.  The grass has grown up
again and
they will not burn it for another three years.  He said he would like
to help
figure out where everyone is buried and look for the stones with a
special
pole.  I was not able to devote the time to it this spring because my
oldest
son got married at my home this year.  I did get some great photo's
though.
I have heard that they say the people buried there went there to
avoid
the Rev. War.  I question that.  What do you know.  I know that the
family is
related to George Washington via your Bigelows and there are
connections to
the Briggs and Howes which are big military names.  Do you know the
military
history of these people?  I have also run across records that may
show they
were Loyalist, atleast some of them.  Belinda Kent
