Notes for John WENZEL:
Captain John Wenzell was born in Boston, Massachusetts. It
appears
that he was christened John Jacob Wenzell, as the records of
Baptisms at
King's Chapel in Boston contains the following entry. "1765,
Sept.
27, John Jacob Wenzell, son of Henry and Mary Wenzell.
Infant sponsors:
Jacob Hederick, John Tinges and Anna Tinges." As his younger
brother,
born in 1767 was named Jacob, it is probable that John's middle
name was
dropped as no further reference to it can be found. Captain
John
is supposed to have lived in or near Boston until the start of the
Revolutionary
War when his mother having died his father removed to Holliston,
MA.
He was about ten ears old at this time and soon after reaching
Holliston
he was "put" to Deacon Marsh, of that town with whom he remained
for three
years. Then at the age of 14 he chose to learn the cooper's
trade
and became an apprentice to a Mr. Newton, who also lived in
Holliston.
After the expiration of his apprenticeship he commenced business
for himself,
remaining in Holliston until he was married in 1790. He and
his wife
are said to have lived with her parents until May 1791 when they
moved
to Framingham, MA and lived in a house owned by Phillip Metcalf.
On Sept. 2, 1801 he bought of Jesse
Everett
a farm of about 70 acres situated in the South-westerly part of
Framingham
near the Holliston line. This is now included within the
limits of
Ashland which was incorporated in 1846. Here Captain John
lived the
rest of his life, and the farm has been owned by his descendants
up to
the present time. (1942) in a workshop adjoining the house
he carried
on his Coopering business. It is said he would never allow
the rising
sun to find him in bed, and commencing his labors at daybreak, his
incessant
hammering would put an end to the slumbers of his household, in
early summer
mornings. He belonged to a company in the 5th Regiment and
3rd Division
of MA Militia. On Feb. 21, 1803 he was commissioned
Lieutenant, and
on May 6, 1806 he received a commission as Captain, which
appointment he
held until Jan. 30, 1808 when he was discharged. He was
afterwards
known as Captain John Wenzell. In 1824 he was one of the
proprietors
of the South Burying Ground which was situated in the
southwesterly part
of South Framingham. Here he and many of his family are
buried.
For many years the custom prevailed in Framingham of letting out
the care
of the town's poor to the lowest bidder for terms of five
years.
In 1828 he was the lowest bidder and at the time of his death
there were
18 paupers on his farm. They were kept in a building which
he erected
for their accommodations in the rear of his house. He
married in
1790 Hephzibah, daughter of Deacon Joseph and Lydia (Brown)
Bigelow of
Holliston. She was born Sept. 24, 1767, and survived her
husband
and died Dec. 10, 1841 aged 74. He died Sept. 12,
1830. They
had five children.
