Robert Ashley Bigelow
Robert A. Bigelow Passed away on August 15, 2002. Bob
Bigelow was one of a kind.
Born to Muriel and Robert S. Bigelow on July
23, 1940, in Springfield, Massachusetts, the family moved to Maine in the
1940's. Bob attended a two-room schoolhouse and occasionally rode his horse
to school with his sister Betsy. In high school, he excelled in track,
holding the Maine title for the mile, and in skiing. He placed first in
the State of Maine Ski Championship in 1959. He gained national recognition
by earning a place on the National Ski Association's junior team, a training
ground for future Olympians. Bob earned a third place medal in Nordic combined
(cross-country and ski jumping) in 1957. He also was a talented trumpet
player and participated in school and local dance bands as well as occasionally
serenading neighbors and loons at the family lakeside camp.
As a young adult, Bob worked as a lumberjack, forest
fire fighter, member of the Saddleback Mountain Ski Patrol (referring to
himself as Rangeley's first ski bum), water skiing instructor, high school
varsity ski coach, aerial photographer, and an elementary and middle school
teacher. He also served in the U.S. Army.
Bob earned a BA in psychology, a M.A.T., and a Ph.D.
in educational research and evaluation.
He attended Dartmouth College, the University of Maine,
and the University of Delaware.
While at Dartmouth, he was a class A skier, was named
All-America in 1960, and became a Wearer of the Green, a distinction reserved
for Dartmouth athletes who have been Olympians, All-Americans, national
champions, or professional athletes.
His professional career in research, evaluation, and
assessment started as an evaluation specialist with the Pittsburgh Board
of Education and he moved to Delaware to become state supervisor of evaluation
and planning at the Department of Public Instruction in 1970.
While at the Department, he managed the first statewide
student-testing program; evaluated Federal programs; and provided school
district workshops in assessment, federal program project management, and
evaluation. He was a key team member in developing the statewide student
longitudinal database and an interactive reporting system.
Bob became supervisor of research, evaluation, and
technology in the Christina School District in 1986. He worked extensively
with databases to provide information to inform district decisions and
managed the district's testing program and participation in the statewide
program. He evaluated district programs and provided expertise and training
to district staff in areas such as using test results for curriculum development.
Bob retired from Christina and in 1996, received a
double lung transplant, the only available treatment for alpha-1, a genetic
disorder that causes lung disease. During his retirement, he taught at
the University of Delaware, served as a consultant for districts and doctoral
candidates, gardened, and worked with pre-transplant patients as a volunteer
at Christiana Hospital.
While visiting family in Maine, he became ill and died
at Maine Medical Center in Portland of complications resulting from the
lung transplant. Family who mourn his loss but draw inspiration from his
courage, determination, good humor, and wit include his wife, Patricia Bigelow;
daughters Barbara McGuigan, Caryn Bartolozzi, and Tessa Bent; mother Muriel
Bigelow; niece Tracy Ladd; and 4 grandsons.
Funeral services were private.
