Methodist Services at Rogersfield, later named
Lyon Mountain, were conducted by visiting clergy in the homes of members
until 1880. Land on which the first church was to be built was deeded to
the church by the Rogers family in that year.
According to a book written by Rev. Stanton
P. Allen, he moved into the first parsonage at 11 First Street in May,
1892. From a congregation of six, he built the church membership to

The church that was built on the Rogers property
on Depot Hill in 1880 continued in use until 1952, when the present church
was built. Four years later, in 1956, the church was dedicated and the mortgage
burned while Rev. Parker B. Ward was pastor. The present pastor is Rev.
Charles 0. Latimer who is also pastor at Dannemora.
Sunday School has been held throughout the years
with many faithful members conducting the classes. The present Sunday School
superintendent, William Kline, and his wife, Lorraine, teach the classes with
volunteer help. For many years the children have received weekly religious
instruction taught by the pastor and Sunday School teachers.
The women's organization of the church, called
the Ladies' Aid, was active from 1916 to 1940 when the name was changed to
the Women's Guild. The name was again changed in 1969 when the Guild became
a part of the Methodist Church's world wide organization, and was called
The Women's Society of Christian Service. Upon the union of the United
Brethern Church
with the Methodist Episcopal the present name is United Methodist Women.
From 1940 to 1953 the men of the church were organized
in a group that met once a month. For many years the Epworth League was an
organization of the youth of the church. More recently the young people's
group is known as The Youth Fellowship.

He was pastor of Lyon Mt. Church in 1956, and was possibly a pastor
in Dannemora as well in this era.
I believe he had a son named Wesley, who was a friend of mine
in the 50's (would love to hear from him)

One young man from the church who went into the
ministry is Rev. Thomas S. Evans, present pastor of The First United Presbyterian
Church of Lansingburgh, Troy, N.Y
The first church at Williamsville, better known
as Standish, was a log cabin built in 1884. The Lyon Mountain pastor
served both churches. Later services were held in the school until 1932 when
the Standish congregation joined the Lyon Mountain church. Four Standish boys
entered the ministry. Claude Winch and Albert Wilson studied at Poultney,
Vermont. Two other Wilson brothers, David and Lauren, were pastors of the
Pilgrim Holiness Church.
THE PROTESTANT
CEMETERY
The oldest
stone in the Protestant cemetery is dated 1882.
The upkeep
of the lots was done by members of dedicated families.
In 1964 a few
volunteers cleared away the dead trees and brush and seeded the cemetery.
Since that time George Compton has kept it well groomed.
