Does anyone know this couple? They were married in Wisconsin sometime
in
the 1880's. I am trying to locate them after this period of time. This
could
be my great-grandfather's(John T. Mullen)sister. She may also be known
as
Maggie Mullen.
From Biographical History of
Monroe co, WI: supplied by Oscar Bigelow; file in Big Soc Library;
Oscar W.
Bigelow, a pioneer of Monroe county, was born in Westport, Essex
co, NY, September 25, 1825, a son of Joseph and Catherine (Chilcott)
Bigelow, also natives of New York., and of English and German
extraction. The father came west the same year as our subject, and made
his home in this county until his death, which occurred in the spring
of 1859; the mother died in New York State. They were the parents
of nine children, viz.: Nancy M., wife of Henry Fish, of Tomah;
Dan W., of Monroe county; Polly O., wife of George Strabridge; and
Hiram O., a resident of Monroe county. The father was a shoemaker by
trade, but in the latter part of his life followed farming.
Oscar W. Bigelow first engaged in driving team
for $10 per month, and the first winter engaged in cutting wood and
teaming, for which services he received a cow in payment. The following
spring he took care of his father's farm, but one year later rented a
place in the same neighborhood, and after another year purchased a team
and engaged in hauling wood to the town of Moriah. Mr. Bigelow
subsequently sold his team and came to Jefferson county, WI, where in
company with his father, he engaged in farming for four years, and
later operated a rented farm until coming to this county in 1856. He
purchased 120 acres of land from the Government, on sections 28 and 33
in LaGrange Twp, where he erected a shanty, 12 X 24 feet, and the next
spring built a log house, which is still standing as a monument of the
pioneer days. In the fall of 1887, Mr. Bigelow erected a frame
residence, 18 X 24 feet, with a wing, 24 X 24 feet, where he made his
home until the fall of 1890, and then moved to Tomah, where he expects
to live a retired life.
He was married May 10, 1847, to Esther D.
Willett (Quillett in other records), who was born February 28, 1828,
and died March 21, 1864. They had seven children, namely: Ransler R.,
born February 28, 1848, is Judge of the State of Nevada, and a resident
of Carson City; Matilda J., wife of K. Taylor, was born January 1,
1850; Mary, born January 16, 1852, is the wife of T.B. Henley, of
Mendocino county, California; Farmer R., born June 14, 1854, died in
Minnesota August 8, 1884; Levi L. , born August 28, 1856, is a
carpenter of Tomahawk, Wisconsin; Helen L., born December 31, 1858,
died January 1, 1864,; and Ester D, born in July 1860, died January 18,
1864. Mr. Bigelow was again married, April 27, 1865, to Mrs. Lucinda
Gleason, widow of George Gleason. She was born in Hubbardston,
Massachusetts, September 9, 1834, a daughter of William and Sarah
(Wheelock) Murdock, natives of Mass. and Vermont, and both now
deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Bigelow are among the county's most worthy and
respected citizens.
FURTHER NOTE: Oscar W. Bigelow "teamed" at first when he was
young and farmed. He hauled wood to the town of Moriah, New
York. He subsequently sold his team and came to Jefferson Co.,
Wisconsin where he farmed with his father on a rented farm for 4
years. Later Oscar rented a farm where he lived until 1856.
He purchased 120 acres of land from the Government in LaGrange Twp
where he erected a shanty 12 X 24 and the next spring built a log
house. In the fall of 1867 he erected a frame residence 18 X 24
with a wing 24 X 24' where he made his home until the fall of 1898 when
he moved to Tomah to retire. He married Esther D. Willett
(Quillett in other records) 5 Oct 1847. She died 21 March 1864.
