Noticed the Lesperance surname on the Clinton County Surname list.
I have a Charles Lesperance married to Henrietta Brion (Brien/Breau/Brault,
etc.) They had about 14 children and I think they lived in Keesville.
Any connection??
Sincerely, Elaine Brehio

All data was taken from the LDS Family History Microfilm # 1450721 except
where indicated. Information in ( ) is the number of the event for
that particular year, ie. B-50 for Marie Ellen is the 50th baptism for
1896.
I hope this will be of some benefit to you. If you ever run across
marriage data for Joseph Brion and Marie Angelique Fontaine I hope
you will drop me a line. This is my largest brickwall. They
were both born in Canada but I believe they were married in NY state.
I believe they were living in Peru, NY about 1842 and then moved to Chesterfield.
They went to
church in Keeseville. Both last names were corrupted many times
in the microfilm mentioned above. Brien, Brault, Brillon, Breau,
Brisson and Fountain, LaFontaine, LaFountain, etc. My last
name is the Massachusetts version of Brion. What a puzzle!!
More from Jerry:
As you may know from the
Lesperance pages within the Bigelow genealogy I have done considerable
research on the Lesperance name. It is obvious that you have also. So I
would like to exchange notes with you. In addition to the info in my message
to Rod, I want to pass the following to you:
1. I don't have a copy of the marriage entry but my notes tell me that
in her 1873 marriage to Charles Lesperance, Ms Brien used the first name
Josephte. Yet in most subsequent records she was Henriette or Henrietta
2. You may not have caught it on the Lesperance pages of the Bigelow
genealogy, but the first Lesperance in North America, Corporal Jean Landie
(or Landier ) dit Lesperance, married Marie-Suzanne BRIEN dit Desrochers
at L'Assomption, L'Assomption County, Quebec on 29 May 1758.
3. I have Rene Jette's "Dictionnaire genealogique des familles du Quebec,
des origines a 1730" (Genealogical Dictionary of Quebec Families from the
beginning [early 1600's] to 1730.) This dictionary is an extraordinarily
complete and accurate accounting of the early Quebec families. There is
only one Brien or Brion who left descendants. The first marriage of that
line in North America was Louis Brien dit Desrochers (son of Julien [or
Elie] Brien and Jeanne Liou) from Brittany , France, who married Suzanne
Bouvier at Montreal in 1681. They had 9 sons and 3 daughters all born at
or near Montreal between 1682 and 1705. Seven of the sons married so they
left quite a dynasty. Their first child Louis born 1682 in Montreal married
Catherine Desrochers at Pointe-aux-Tembles (near Montreal) in 1718. Louis
and Catherine's 8th child was Marie-Suzanne who married Corporal Jean Landier
dit Lesperance. I consider it a better than a 50-50 chance that your name
will trace to Louis Brien dit Desrochers and Suzanne Bouvier. But first
you have to get past Joseph Brion.
Many thanks for the info. It's rare that somebody
offers me info. You sure spent a lot of time just typing it up. Yes, I
had the marriage and 13 of the 14 kids that you listed. I didn't have Henrietta
Elizabeth. I had an Andrew with no date of birth or baptism who is probably
"your" Louis Andre; and I had a Joseph (again with no date of birth or
baptism) who is probably "your" Joseph Narcisse. The 13 kids that I had
were all baptized at St. John the Baptist Church (the Keeseville "French"
Catholic Church)
If you are interested in
more on this family here are some marriages:
Charles m. Lya Desroches (date/place of m. unknown to me)
William Olivier m. Ida Provost (date/place of m. unknown to me)
Pierre m. Leah Barber, 8 May 1907, St J-B Church, Keeseville
Lulicite Esther (I have Juliette Esther) m. William Lebrun, 4 May 1915,
St. J-B
Anne m. Joseph Charland, 14 Nov 1911, St. J-B
I have been working French-Canadian
genealogy very heavily after I retired a second time in 1993. I am of 100%
French-Canadian ancestry; ditto my wife who I met and married out here
in paradise in 1954. I get back to New England, Clinton & Essex County,
NY and Quebec every autumn. This year it will be late September. Rattle
my chain in July or August and I'll make a note to try to do something
about Joseph Brion and Marie-Angelique Fontaine on the September trip.
But as you have already found out the name changes are a problem. Also
that first marriage on the U.S. side of the border can be difficult to
find. I only have two gaps in my entire pedigree: both in Northern Vermont;
both first generation U.S. (it's politically incorrect to use "American"
in this sense) people; and both in the last half of the 19th century.
Let me make some suggestions
for you: NY State and some of the counties in Northern NY made periodic
censuses in addition to the U.S. census. These can be helpful. St J-B didn't
get started until the 1850's so before that date the French Catholics used
Immaculate Conception Church (the Irish church) in Keeseville but on the
Essex County side. You might write them. Lastly, for a few years I was
a member of the Northern NY American-Canadian Genealogical Society whose
mailing address is Plattsburgh but whose library is in Keeseville. You
can probably get them to do some research for you for a modest fee. (You
can join them for a year for something like $20 and you can get some free
services.) Let me know if you want more on this society. I don't have an
address for immaculate Conception Church but it's a small town, so you
could write to the church with just a Keeseville address. Best,
