read that on April 14, 1851 Harvey Edgerton, Eli Dunsha, and Dexter Rice were

was in December of that year thee men voted a tax of $350.00 for leasing a lot and
bujilding a schoolhouse. The following year it was agreed that Orson (sic)
Sherwood would 'Furnish all materials and build a school house and two outhouses
for $300.00.' Ten dollars was paid for a stove. This building was located on
Edgerton road and today has been remodelede and is occupied as a house.
In 1851 the school year was reported as fall, winter, and summer terms totaling
seven months, the number of days in each varying with the summer being the
longest."

and women.).

"Services were from his late residence, #92 Cortland Street, Monday, March 31, at 10 a.m. Standard time. Friends
invited. Burial private at North Royalton. Please omit flowers." -- Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer obituary follows, as recorded by Wayne Sherwood at the Case Western Reserve
Genealogical Library:
"He was a Prominent West sider and an Early Settler.
Orasmus (sic) Sherwood, at one time one of Cleveland's representative business men, died at his home, No. 98
Courtland Street, Sunday afternoon of paralysis, at the age of eighty-one years and three months. He was born in
Genessee County, N.Y., and came here when seventeen months old with his parents on a small sailing vessel from
Buffalo, and was carried in his mother's arms for fourteen miles to what is now called Royalton. He lived there for
45 years, with the exception of frequent trips to Cleveland. Cleveland was at that time a great wilderness.
Mr. Sherwood's recollections of Cleveland were very interesting as he related them. He forded what is now the
mouth of the Cuyahoga River to Whisky Island. At that time it was possible to enter the old river bed from the lake.
Mr. Sherwood is the inventor of the apparatus for sawing spiles under water, and of the hoisting apparatus
which made it possible to unload ore from the hold of a vessel. he was a prominent abolitionist, and took great
interest in all public improvements. His mind retained its remarkable vitality to the hour of his death.
The interment will take place Monday in Royalton at the old family burying ground.
Mr. Sherwood was a distant relative of Ethan Allen of revolutionary fame."
Wayne also said that he viewed the old Census Records for Ohio on microfilm and he saw the handwritten census
records for the farm in Royalton, which is just outside Cleveland (southwest), listing all the people who were living
there in the Sherwood family (and he thought a couple of others). Headed by Orsamus Sherwood. The records said
he had previously (at the same of the 1830 census) been in Albany County , New York. There are a lot of
Sherwoods in that part of New York state at that time, and they have good records in Albany County, but he never
followed up on this, other than to ascertain the name of somebody in that region, near Schenectady, who knows
quite a bit about their records in that area.
At the Case Western Reserve Library, he also found a microfilm clipping of Orsamus Sherwood's death notice in the
newsletter, which memtioned that he was sort of a builder and inventor, and also called him a "prominent
abolitionist." He made a copy of that and it should be in the materials that Carol Hosler has.
He also gave the library a copy of Lovesta's "autobiography," which they eagerly snatched out of his hands.
KST 4/24/03 research from records of death shows he died at 81 years 3 mos. while living at 92 Courtland. Died
from Valvular heart disease, apoplexy.
Lived at 63 Courtland St. during 1876-1879. Looking at old maps in the Fairview Park City Library show
Courtland St. is now 54th St. as we drove down this street we found an Old Catholic Church there and further
down was an old building with "The Covrtland" ( this was the spelling with a "v" on the side of the building which
seemed to prove to me that it was once Courtland St. This was quite an exciting find.
Ron, Karen's husband went into St. Stephen's Catholic Church and found out that it dated to 1869.
KST 4/24/03 research also from city Directories of Cleveland shows:
Reel 1 1883-84
Sherwood, Orsamus, residence 63 Courtland
Sherwood, Strieginger & Geissendorfer (Orsamus Sherwood, Jacob Striebinger and John Geissdorfer), breakwater
contrractors, nr. head of river bed.
Orsamus
Reel 2 1884-85
Sherwood, Orsamus, carp. r. 382 Franklin Ave.
3
Family Group Sheet
Reel 2 1885-86
Sherwood, Orasmus (sp. error), Contr. 382 Franklin Ave.
Reel 3 1887-88
Sherwood, Orasmus (sp. error), removed to Kansas
My research is some what inaccurate as to the dates on the reels as we were in a hurry as the library was ready to
close and I need to recheck some dates as I also show another reel as follows:
Reel 3 1887-88
Sherwood Orsamus, cont. 382 Franklin Ave.
It was difficult to tell which year was which as there were usually two years on a reel. Reel 6 did not show an
Orsamus and I am not sure what date that was, obviously haste makes waste and confusion.
KST research looks like the marriage to Lovesta was Oct 10 instead of the 11th, 1858 as was previously in the
records.
Family legend has it that Orsamus's brother, Samuel, married Caroline
Stewart who was related to several significant people from England:
third cousin to Queen Elizabeth of England; 2nd cousin to Mary, Queen
of Scots; and 2nd cousin to Charles Fox. Caroline Stewart's mother
(Hayes) was first cousin to Rutherford B. Hayes. Obviously much work
is required to support this legend.[sherwood9-00.FTW]
