LOCKLIN ANCESTRY – JOEL - 3RD GENERATION IN AMERICA

11. JOEL 3RD LOCKLIN   (b 1766 - d 1807) Joel was the youngest member of the Dennis 2 and Abegail Locklin family. He married MARY (MERCY) HOUGHTON (b 1767 - d 1849). Probably Joel was born in Templeton, Mass. where the family were residing in 1760, before their moving on to Putney, Vermont by 1773. At the time of Joel's birth, he had two sisters Sarah and Abegail and two brothers Jonathan and Levi. Cemetery records at Rutland, Vermont indicate that his wife, Mary (Mercy) died 18th Aug. 1849 and was buried in Pleasant Cemetery, West Rutland, Vermont, grave #244.   Joel and Mercy Locklin had two daughters - Salome (b 1788 - d 1859), Chloe (no dates) and three sons – Joseph  (b 1796 - d 1863), Curtis (b 1797 - d 1848) and Joel (no dates).
According to marriage records in the Congregational Church in Rutland, Vermont, this family listed above were born in Durham, Canada East (now the province of Quebec). By 1810 they were residing in Rutland, Vermont. Church records show - "Salome Locklin married Elihu Howe 27 Feb. 1810 (Salome, born in Durham Canada East"). Another marriage record of Curtis Locklin's son shows his father Curtis as being born in Durham, Canada East. Son Joseph (b 1796 - d 1863), the forefather of the Ontario Locklins, as we know, came to Prince Edward County, Ontario in 1814 and his brother, Joel, and family followed him in 1857 and settled on a farm in Murray Township, Northumberland County beside Joseph and Elizabeth Locklin. Brother Joel had a son Joseph born 1841 and a daughter Martha Helen who came to Ontario with him, as well as three other children who died in Vermont. Brother Joel's son Joseph born 1841 died 1911, and his only son Joseph died in childhood. So, no descendents of brother Joel, by the Locklin name, reside in Ontario at the present time.
JOEL 3RD LOCKLIN AND MERCY (HOUGHTON) LOCKLIN CHILDREN:
 xx Salome (b 1788 - d 1859),
 xx Chloe (no dates)
 xx Joseph  (b 1796 - d 1863),
 xx Curtis (b 1797 - d 1848)
 xx Joel (no dates).

LOCKLIN ANCESTRY – JOSEPH - 4TH GENERATION - CANADA

XX. JOSEPH 4TH LOCKLIN: was born Sept. 9th, 1796 in Durham Canada East (later the province of Quebec) son OF JOEL AND MARY (MERCY) LOCKLIN and moved to Rutland, Vermont with his family before 1810. This information taken from the Registry office Montpelier, Vermont. The family were members of the Congregational Church in Rutland, Vermont where marriages etc. are recorded. - War Service information from the National Archives & Records Service, Washington, D.C.:- "Joseph Locklin age 18 enlisted in Capt. Haig's Corp. of Light Dragoons, Vermont State. Served in war of 1812-14 from May 1st to June 30th, 1814. Place where he lived after service - West Rutland, Vermont & Ontario, Canada." Please note that these records show the name spelled "Locklin". Joseph's brief term of service in the war of 1812-14 brought him to Price Edward County, Ontario. Older members of the family living in 1964-5-6 recalled that Joseph returned to Prince Edward County after the war with a soldier named Hendrick.

O March 19th, 1822, Joseph married ELIZABETH (BETSY) STRIKER (b 25 Feb. 1799 - d 29 March 1862). Betsy was a granddaughter of James Striker, a United Empire Loyalist who fled from Dutchess County, New York State, with no possessions. He had assisted two of his loyalist nephews to escape. James Striker settled in Hollowell Township in Prince Edward County and died 1835 and is buried in Picton Parish churchyard. We believe Joseph and Betsy's first place of settlement was in the P.E. County near Mt. View. Tom Locklin recalls his grandfather William Garrett pointing out the first farm settlement of his grandparents Joseph and Elizabeth (Betsy) Locklin.
JOSEPH 4TH LOCKLIN AND ELIZABETH (STRIKER) LOCKLIN had five sons and four daughters.
 xx. Joel (b 1823 - d 1886)
 xx. JOHN (b 1824 - d 1912)
 xx. JAMES (b 1826 - dec)
xx. SALOME (b 1828 - dec) - Married GIDEON WHITE
 xx. Mary Jemima (b 1833 - d 1923) - Married ISIAH B. THAYER
 xx. Levi (b 1833 - dec)
 xx. Garratt (b 1837 - d 1907)
 xx. Abegail (b 1834 - d 1923) - Married AARON COULTER
 xx. beth (b 1844 - d 1912) - Married JAMES COULTER

The registry office in Picton, Ont. records - "Joseph and Elizabeth Locklin of Murray township purchased a farm in Ameliasburgh township, 7th town line for 250 lbs. in 1854." - In May 1855 they sold the same farm for 600 lbs. It is thought they purchased this property for brother Joel who had planned to come to Ontario from Vermont but changed his plans at that time. His brother Joel did come to Ontario in 1857 and settled on a farm on the 2nd Conc. of Murray township close to Joseph and Betsy. The family of Joseph Locklin apparently moved from Prince Edward county to 2nd. Conc. Murray township, Northumberland county (English Settlement). We know Joseph and Betsy were at that address in 1854. Joseph's will, drawn up on 2nd April 1863 requested that his executors deed and dispose of all his estate both real and personal and that the proceeds be divided, as directed, among his children. Betsy had predeceased him on March 29th, 1862. We, therefore gather that the above property in Murray township was sold at the time of Joseph's death. It should be repeated here that Joseph signed his will "Loughlin" and that his son John, as executor, later signed below on the same document "John Locklin". -- Joseph Locklin died on the 28th of May 1863. Betsy and Joseph are buried in the old Smith Cemetery, Smithfield, Ontario.

LOCKLIN ANCESTRY -  JOHN -  5TH GENERATION - CANADA

XX. LOCKLIN, second son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Betsy) was born Dec. 10th, 1825 in Prince Edward County, near Mt. View. In 1850 John married PHOEBE COOPER, born May 4th, 1829, the 13th child of John Cooper (b 1787 – d 1858) and Mehetabel Bull (b 1785 - d 1854) in Hallowell township, Prince Edward County. Phoebe Locklin died March 11th, 1893 and John in 1912. Both are buried in Stockdale Cemetery, Stockdale, Ontario
The 1878 Atlas of Northumberland County shows John Locklin's name on Lot 24, Concession "C" (90 acres) Stoney Point, Brighton township. The 1881 Census of #E=3 Murray Township, Northumberland County lists JOHN AND PHOEBE LOCKLIN - FARMERS, QUAKERS AND THE FAMILY -
 xx. WILLIAM GARRATT, age 20
 xx. JOSIAH V., age 15
 xx. MARY E., age 11

Daughter Mehetabel was 25 years old at this date and had already married William W. Dolman on April 14th, 1880.  John and Phoebe Locklin were Quakers, and Percy and Ralph passed on anecdotes of teasing their Grandfather,  John, over his Quaker idioms, "thee" and "thou" and sayings such as "I see a wagon rising the hill" and "thee's a little  fool". Ella (Mrs. Raymond Norton) in conversation in 1964 recalled her great uncle John Locklin stopping at their  home on his way to Quaker meetings in Bloomfield, Ont.

From 1887 on, our information would suggest that John and Phoebe lived with son William Garrett and family, on  their return from Alexander, Manitoba. Phoebe died in 1893 while the joint family were living in Seymour township.  John lived to be elderly and died in 1912 on the farm of son William Garrett in the Lawson Settlement, Brighton  township.

You will note that Phoebe Locklin's mother was Mehetabel Bull. Mrs. Mary E. Young of Santa Rosa, California has  been in touch with the writer and several members of the family regarding a "Bull" family history which she has been compiling.

LOCKLIN ANCESTRY - WILLIAM GARRATT -  6TH GENERATION - CANADA

xx. William Garratt, eldest son of John and Phoebe Locklin, was born on a farm at Stoney Point, Brighton township con. "C", Lot 26, Northumberland County, on May 21st, 1860, and died April 16th, 1946 at his home in the village of Brighton, Ont. William G. married REBECCA ARMINTHA (MINNIE) Sharpe on Dec. 13th, 1882. Minnie was born on April 21st, 1863 and died August 4th, 1901.    After their marriage the young couple lived on the Sharpe farm on the 9th conc. of Murray township. Their first child, ELMA AMANDA, was born there in 1883. They left this location to join a Mr. Osterhout, along with two other farm families recruited by Mr. Osterhout, to take up a land claim at Alexander, Manitoba. William Garratt, with his wife Minnie and small baby daughter, Elma, travelled by train along with their livestock and machinery to face the unknown life of a homesteading family. Alexander was a journey from Brandon, Manitoba on the main railway line.  Arriving on the approach of cold weather they just had time to build a sod house for the winter. The story goes, that on account of dry weather the water in the sloughs was low and frozen solid and that snow had to be melted to water the cattle. The second year they placed straw on the ice and so doing saved the water supply. Each farmer was assigned a team of horses, and it seems one of William's horses died and was replaced by an oxen named "Rusty". Rusty had a mind of his own and when the flies were bad, he took off, pulling the equipment into the sloughs or swamp areas. The following year they had cleared more acreage and had good crops. Just as William and Minnie were thinking of taking out their own claim, they received word from home that their parents were having a difficult time. So, the decision was made to return to Ontario.
 *  The family rented a farm on the 9th Conc. Murray township, west half of lot 5 (Wiley Place) property of William Buck in the 1878 Atlas of Northumberland county. We believe the eldest son, Percy Elwood, was born here on July 31st, 1887. By 1891 we find the joint family living on a rental property, lot 19, Conc. 2, Seymour township (property of French in the 1878 Atlas). We have in our possession a letter received by Phoebe and John Locklin, written by Phoebe's sister, Sophira Striker, dated 1891, address "Hoard's Station, Northumberland County, Ont." We conclude that Phoebe and John were living with the William Garratt family at that time. Daughter, Phoebe Ethel,  was born in 1890 and son, Ralph, in 1893, while the family were in Seymour township, Hoard's Station. Phoebe died in March that same year, 1893. The family and John Locklin returned to the 9th Conc. Murray township and after a brief stay on the Andrew Sharpe farm, purchased in 1895, a 100 acre farm on the 9th Conc. south half of lot 6, Murray twp. (the R. Buck farm). This property is presently owned by WILLIAM GERALD LOCKLIN, Grandson of William Garratt, R.R.#1, Frankford, Ontario. It was on this farm that the last member of the family, Mae, was born in 1898.

XX. REBECCA ARMINTHA (MINNIE) LOCKLIN died 1891. Elma, oldest of the family, was married here in 1906 to Mr. WILL  SEWARD. William Garratt purchased the adjacent 50 acres, property of W. Bush, and later he divided the 150 acres  in parcels of 80 and 70 acres for sons Percy and Ralph. Later, when Ralph married in 1917 a second house was  built on the 70 acres fronting on the side road. Percy built the large frame home, presently on the property, on the 80  acres fronting the 9th conc. road, about 1921. A portion of the original farm house stood for some time.  - Percy married Jane Powell in 1911, and William Garratt and his second wife, SARAH MIKEL GLENN, purchased a farm in the Lawson Settlement, Conc. "B", lot 30, Brighton township, from G.L. Reddick on October 12th, 1911. John Locklin moved to Brighton with the family and died there the following year. The other family members, Ethel, Ralph and Mae moved to Brighton with their father, William Garratt, and step-mother, Sarah, and grandfather, John. When Ralph married in 1917, he and his wife Anna Peister moved to the 70 acre parcel of the farm on the 9th Conc. Of Murray, as previously mentioned. Sarah Mikel Glenn Locklin died in 1928, and in the spring of 1929 Ralph and Anna purchased the Lawson Settlement farm from the father. Percy and Jane Locklin then purchased the 70 acre parcel of the original farm on the 9th Conc. of Murray from Ralph and Anna Locklin. William Garratt stayed on with the Ralph Locklin family until 1930 when he purchased a home in the village of Brighton, Ontario.
 -  This family were members of the Methodist church. William Garratt and Rebecca Armintha are buried in the Stockdale Cemetery, Stockdale, Ontario.

LOCKLIN CONNECTIONS

On the previous pages we have attempted to give you a highlight glimpse of the Locklin Genealogy from the ancestor
Dennis' arrival in America. However, we believe you might be interested in a brief sketch on the information
collected from many American and Canadian relatives on the brothers and sisters of John Locklin.

This was the first family born in Ontario, Canada. A remarkable statistic and credit to JOSEPH AND ELIZABETH LOCKLIN,
that there were nine children born and no record of infant or childhood deaths.

It should be mentioned here that the descendents of Levi and Jonathan Locklin have supplied us with a great deal of
detail and photos of their branch of the Locklin family. Levi and Jonathan Locklin were brothers of Joel Locklin and
uncles of our Joseph Locklin who settled in the Price Edward County, Ontario, Canada. The descendents of Levi
and Jonathan live in various states of the United States of America
