Reuben 5 BIGELOW


 16C59.    Reuben 5 BIGELOW, son of Jabez 4 (Eleazer 3,Joshua2, John1) and Deborah (KNOWLTON) BIGELOW, was born Westminster, MA, 23 November 1775; he married in October 1796, Abigail Brooks of Princeton, daughter of David and Patience (White) Brooks. She was born 16 September 1776. They lived a short time in Princeton, MA, but on 01 March 1800 moved to Bromley, VT (which is now called Peru, VT). At the time there were only four families in the town. As the town grew, he became a leading citizen, and was its first representative in the state legistature. For many years he was Justice of the Peace, Town clerk, and Deputy Sheriff. He also taught the first school in Peru, and the first church services were held in his home. He was one of the first men of his era to give up the use of intoxicating beverages and to advocate their abolition. He died in Peru VT 13 December 1834; his wife Abigail died 02 September 1857.
