Could you please give me any information on the marriage of Mary
Ann Bigelow (7) #16117.31-dau of Asa 6 Bigelow
( Asa 5 , Joshua 4,
Joshua 3, Joshua 2,
John1) She was married to
Judge Archibald Bull and they were of Troy, N.Y. My realtionship
comes through Archibald who was my great great grandfather and would
make Mary Ann my gggrandmother.
I did not have her name but discovered it through a FTM listing and
chasing
down to you. The info connected to the listing is no longer there
so
used an URL I discovered. I would appreciate any info you have as
I have little--only that the Judge was the father of my ggrandfather
which
is on his death certicate here in Bath, Maine.
Thank you. Cheech
(Frances Young Kakos)
More from Cheech 2010:
Checked lots of my collection on Mary Ann but
have come up empty on her parents. I guess I thought because you
had Archibald Bull on the Bigelow family genealogy that he belonged
there. Don't know that he does as those people supposedly
looking like her parents, couldn't have been.--at least the woman--her
mother (?)--died in 1805--and that doesn't come out correctly if the
1850 census tells her correct age--38. The parents youngest
child was born only 19 days before his mother, Abigail,
died. This meant that Mary Ann was born as the first child of
that family? Another question in mind is this--What did the
husband do about child care for 4 small children, Did he marry
again? Can't find any thing to help give an answer.
This whole family has been difficult to fit
together. There were a number of Bull genealogies that had
Archibald with a 1820 death date. I know that my Archi had to
have lived at least until William H. Bull--my gr grandfather had been
conceived. Actually, it was because I found Larry Kammerer in
Troy, NY at the Renns. Co. Historical Society that we pieced
together--census, St. Paul's records, newspaper accounts in the Troy
Library, etc. In one of the obituaries it mentioned his son
William H. Bull and what he said in a letter. Nothing had ever
been known about his 2nd marriage. He had William and another
son, John Archibald, who died at age 11 of scarlet fever.
Obituary of Asa Bigelow - appeared Troy Daily Whig July 24,1849; 3:1.
"In this city on the 20th instant, of a cutaneous disease, with
which he
had been
afflicted for several years, ASA BIGELOW, Esq., aged 79 years and 8
months.
The subject of this notice was a native of Brookfield, Mass., from
which place he
removed to Worthington, and followed the business of a merchant; and
was respected for his rigid integrity, and honorable
conduct and probity. He was appointed postmaster at that place, under
Thomas Jefferson. He removed to this city in 1803 or 4,
and for several years was a merchant in company with Consider White,
then a resident here. During a residence here of 45 years,
he has merited the respect and esteem of his numerous acquaintances,
and lived the life of a righteous, godly and upright man.
Possessing peculiar notions on the subject of religion, he never joined
any particular sect; but by his example sought to impress
upon his family and friends, that to seek for truth in all things, and
live as nearly as possible the life of an upright man, would
ensure that reward which is promised to the righteous."

Asa Bigelow, Adeline's father moved to Troy, NY in 1803/04 from
Worthington, MA. This via his Obit in the Troy
newspapers.
He served as the first Postmaster in Worthington, MA. Appointed
by Jefferson. He served for nine (9) years, and his first
recorded accounting was in 1796. The first stage coach line in
the area was estalished in Dec 1793 and soon thereafter was
the Post Office. So--say 1794 plus nine year gives 1803, the
about year Asa moved to Troy. Adeline's birth place and date
still in LIMBO. She was born 1802/03 WHERE?
The note of Abigail's death was recorded at Worthington, MA, a stop by Asa on the way to Troy, NY from Brooksfield, MA.
In the Vital Records of Worthington, MA it says, W Asa/ Dr of Noah
Washburn of Hartford, CT., 28 Yr 1 M. 10 D. / N G. R. 6.
This means, died at age 28yrs 1 month and 10 days. G.R.6. means
gravestone record, Center Cemetery. There was no
indication of what the "N" meant in the list of abbreviations.

Please add this to the long Asa Bigelow site:
The 1800 census for Worthington, MA.
One male-has to be Asa, 25 under 45
One female-has to be Louisa, under 10
One female-has to be Abigail, 15 under 26
Just three in the house. Makes great sense.
Adeline not born until 1802.
I removed Mary Ann, who married Judge Bull,

I find diddly for Asa year 1810 -- Lots of Asa Bigelow, all cross

I have the maiden name of Hannah. Hawkins. Before all I
had was Hannah H
Bigelow. Now I the marriage date, 1826, which proves she could
not be the
mother of Adeline b 1803+/- and Louisa b 1797, two daughters of
Asa with which I
am familiar and in the Troy newspapers. Adeline is my GGGM,
married Nathan
Marble 19 Feb 1822, in Troy and trekked to Port Byron, NY after
the canal was
operational. Adeline was Nathan's second wife, first an Esther.
Wickes?? I know
all about a child of Esther and Nathan. She was an Esther too
and married at 16
to Lemuel Covel Paine Freer Louisa married Joseph Wickes and
remained in
and around Troy.
To repeat, the Troy newspapers have Asa as the father in the
marriages of
Adeline and Louisa.
So, Abigail Washburn has to be the mother of Adeline and
Louisa. Probably born
in Worthington or Cheshire MA. I have been looking at
Worthington and Cheshire.
My luck, so far neither place is on the net for/with decent
data. So, I'll keep on
turning rocks for Adeline's birth data. In the 1850 census she
gives birth state as
MA and 1860 she gives NY. Or was it the other way around? Has to
be MA.
Nathan died in 1868 without a will, but the probate has him
worth $. As NY had a
death tax in those days too, it cost the heirs $5,000 to get
their hands on it.
From several sources I have the following for Asa and Abigail
children. Anson
Wells ?, Amelia ?, Mary Ann, Louisa, Adeline and Asa Washburn.
Nothing for Asa
and Hannah. Anson Wells and Amelia came from Barbour Early
Families of
Hartford, CT.
Looking for birth data re Adeline Bigelow in MA
My Adeline and Louisa data was via what I found in Troy. And,
before I knew about Abigail Washburn. I made a msg to A Streit,
due to his material in LDS CD # 10, and he made me aware
of Abigail and that it would appear that the two daughters were out of
Abigail, not Hannah. So it would seem.
In June 2002, I found the grave markers of Nathan Marble and Adeline
in Port Byron, NY. Adeline's says DEAR
MOTHER-ADELINE-wife of NATHAN MARBLE, DIED Jan. 31, 1874, AGED 72
YEARS. Both Adeline's and Nathan's markers
are rather fancy well carved marble.
So, just a little cleaning up will lock on the Washburn line.
Maybe.

Guess the best question is, who is Abigail's mother?
There is a marriage of Archibald Bull, Esq married 12/27/27
(this
meaning 1827) Mary Ann Bigelow both of Troy ; Rev. Howard (9-1/1/28)
This was the date of publication--the 9 translating to the source--the
Troy Budget newspaper. I have the book this info is published
in--10,000 Vital Records of Eastern New York--1777-1834. This is
one of
a three volume series drawm from ealy New York newspapers.
The date of William's birth certainly coincides with the marriage
date
of Archibald and Mary as he was born 11 Oct. 1827/8.
Archibald Bull could have been married before--which would have
nothing
do with the birth of Wm.-- as an announcement from the Detroit
Gazette
shows that Mary Bull died 28 Feb 1826--in her 35th year at Troy, NY,
wife of Archibald Bull, sister of Mrs. Doty and Mrs. Rice, who reside
in
Mt. Clemens (Michigan?). Another Mary? He probaly married again
after
her death.
Also, Archibald Bull 60, lawyer- Mary 38, and William 22,clerk were
shown in the Fed census of Troy in 1850. Mary's age causes
question.
Was she a young mother when she gave birth?
One more confusion is that there was another Archibald Bull, judge
who
died when he was 35 in 1820. He is not the Archibald who is mine
as
Wm.--the son---was born later.
What information do you have on Mary Ann Bigelow who married
Archibald
Bull, judge? I think the listing I saw on your genealogy gave her
father as Asa--not completely sure, tho. Was there an Asa married
to a
Washburn?
Thank you for any info you may be able to give me.

Here it is!!!!!
Asa married Abigail Washburn.
Hannah, her sister, married Joseph Hawkins. Joseph died. Were there
children? Not in Ancestry. Did Hannah lay them on Abigail, as she was a
widow?
Can this be the reason we cannot find Adeline in Worthington and she
was really Hannah's kid and thus a Hawkins?
Abigail died. Asa moved to Troy and later married Hannah (22 Jun 1826).
Hannah Hawkins and Hannah Bigelow both died on the same date.
John Clements, inter alia, found Hannah in New York City working with
her sister Rebecca and then she, Hannah, married a Mr. Bigelow and kind
of vanished.
The rocks are a turning.

To: DEC405 _ I
I am delighted to hear from you and I do have a little info on Abigail
Washburn. The historian in Troy has been very helpful and I have sent
him
the info that I have on the families who lived in Troy.
Asa was a founding member of the Free Masons Lodge in Cheshire
Berkshire MA in 1794. The building is now a museum and there is a
plaque there with the names of both Asa and Consider as founding
members. If you write to
the Masonic Lodage in MA they will send you some photos.
In the Troy city directory Asa is listed as a saw filer. From 1840-49
lived at 48 Ferry St., in a fine Greek revival house which no longer
exists. I
have some info on Abigail as follows: Bn Dec 11,1776 in Hartford CT.
DOD
Jan 21,1805 Troy NY. She had 2 children, Mary Ann ( no data) and Asa
Washburn
Bigelow, DOD Jan 2, 1805.
I can only assume that the baby died at birth and Abigail soon after.
Mary Ann marr Archibald BULL, (1779-1849) on Dec. 27, 1827 in Troy. The
announcement is in the Troy Budget,
June 27.1 got this from the Rensselaer Historical Society.
Asa married Hannah HAWKINS, June 22, 1826 in Troy.
I shall need to go into my files for the resources, through the years I
have had a few crashes and I see that I have not put sources into the
program where I should have.
I am not related to the WASHBURN family except for the fact that
Consider married Sarah so I have not done much work on searching their
genealogy.
Only to try to find more about Consider.
Have you read the BIGELOW site? They have a great family genealogy
site. You might pick up something there.
thanks for writing, ,

Hello Cousin Dave.
I think I have Hannah HAWKINS, wife of Asa BIGELOW, fingered.
In your data you have Hannah WASHBURN (dau of Noah) died 19 J? 1858,
citing
"Harman Weslee Odom msg 5/5/2003 re bible with Noah Washburn data plus
Bathsheba Sexton etc. Great data."
This Hannah WASHBURN married Joseph HAWKINS according to "Early
Hartford Families" p. 635.
at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/surnames.bigelow/264.1
your message shows Hannah H. BIGELOW died 19 Jan 1858 citing the Troy
Daily Whig.
And you say "The H is for Hawkins."
I agree it is HAWKINS. Asa BIGELOW married the sister of his deceased
wife Abigail,
Hannah WASHBURN, widow of Joseph HAWKINS.
Just yesterday I got the work of Helen Graham Carpenter. "The Reverend
John Graham
of Woodbury, Connecticut and his Descendants" [Chicago : The Monastery
Hill Press,
1942], Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah microfilm 1321224,
item 3.
The four Washburn sisters sure get around:
Abigail Washburn married Asa Bigelow before 1792. Abigail died 1805.
Hannah Washburn married Joseph Hawkins.
Hepzipah Washburn married Joseph Graham in 1801 as his third wife.
Hepzipah died 1819.
Rebecca, Hepzipah's sister, married Joseph Graham about 1820 as his
fourth wife.
Hannah went into a partnership with sister Rebecca in New York City.
They were both
widows at the time. The partnership arrangement lasted for only "about
two years, until
the widow HAWKINS married a Mr. BIGELOW."
The book doesn't say when Hannah married a BIGELOW, but from other data
it appears to be about 1830.
The 1830 Census is when the "older" woman shows up in the Asa BIGELOW
household.
What say you?

Okay. I dunno when they were married or when Joseph HAWKINS died.
But "John Graham descendants" says: Joseph Graham died 1823, widow
Rebecca
(WASHBURN) GRAHAM carried on the boarding house for 7 years (1823 + 7 =
1830).
Then Rebecca moved to another address in NYC and went into a
partnership with her
sister Hannah (WASHBURN) HAWKINS.
The partnership went for two years (1830 + 2 = 1832) when Hannah broke
off the
partnership and married a Mr. Bigelow.
Were there children?
Graham descendants doesn't say if Hannah had children but does say,
"Hannah had
married a Mr. Hawkins and had lived in Boston, evidently in some style
- for an old family story says that 'she had a page to carry her
train.'
After Mr. Hawkins died she moved to New York..."
So it looks like Hannah would have moved in New York City about 1830
when she joined her sister Rebecca.
Did Hannah lay them (children) on Abigail, as she was a widow?
Abigail died 1805. I don't think Hannah became a widow until years
later.
Abigail died. Asa moved to Troy and later married Hannah (22 Jun 1826).
Where does that marriage date of 22 Jun 1826 come from? It doesn't jibe
with the fact
Hannah (WASHBURN) HAWKINS is in New York City as late as 1830 and
didn't marry BIGELOW until after 1832.
