The late Mrs. Ed (Pat) Bigelow's records; photographs
Larry W. Campbell, 4741 7th Av., Sacramento 20, CA submitted group
sheets before Vol. 1 and 2 were on computer. Marcus crossed the plains
by ox-cart in 1857. A letter (Eugene's article) written by
Marcus' older brother to Allen Bigelow and Emily Wallace, his parents,
instructing them how to prepare for the transcontinental trip.
Allen was then 55 and took wife and children to foot of Mt. Shasta in
Northern CA, evidently taking the
Oregon trail after crossing Utah and dropped into CA fm. the north and
settled in Weed, a little community on the northeast slope of Mt.
Shasta. They went into the logging business and were active in
the manufacture of lumber during gold rush era. Then they moved
to Gridley, 100 mi.south in Sacramento Valley and farmed. In
their memory, BIGELOW FALLS on east slope of Mt.Shasta (near famous
chalets later built by William R. Hurst) and BIGELOW ROAD, near
Pennington not far from Gridley.

The following below is my personal additions
and changes (some in underlining) to your current information on the Thomas
Allen Bigelow family so you can decide what is worth using.
It
also appears from your information that Jabez Bigelow was the
first
to settle in "New" Lebanon, Columbia, NY, so a correction from
"Lebanon"
is needed in Jabez's information also.
It turns out three federal census records for
1850-1870 all show Jane Emily Wallace Bigelow gives her
birthplace
as "Mass" and not New Lebanon as we assumed. I verified
from
Gridley-Biggs Cemetery records that her correct name is Jane Emily
Wallace,
not Emily Jane. She is "Jane" on all census records, and a
daughter
was named Jane E. Bigelow, who married Joseph Hogeboom, who was a
successful
farmer living next door to her parents in Butte,Sutter,CA. It was
their son Marcus James who disliked farming and moved into
Gridley,Butte,CA.
I found June 1846 land records for Allen
Bigelow in Genoa, Dekalb, IL. This reveals that his family left
New Lebanon, NY in the spring of 1846 and arrived in IL to purchase his
new farm lands in June 1846. Note that U.S. Land Patent records
are dated years after the actual purchase because farmers had to make
the application and governments take time to act, so they are less
reliable with long delayed dates for
arrival.
It is useful to know that when you can find
section, township, range and meridian citations from land records, then
you can use www.topozone.com > view maps > state > county>
city to find
the township grid numbers, from which you can plot the portion of the
section like NENE (40 acres) or NE1/2 (80 acres) or NE (160 acres) or
N1/2 (320
acres). Then identify roads and features to find that same
location
in an aerial view at Topozone or MapQuest to see it today.
I am still trying to verify if Thomas Allen went
directly to Butte,Sutter,CA or if he went first to Shasta
Valley,Siskiyou,CA where their son Ralph P. and family remained alone
in 1860. Your information in another Bigelow ancestor says the
parents went to Shasta first and were followed by others after a letter
from one back to the family on how to
travel across the nation. There was a lot of gold mining in
Siskiyou
County, but Ralph P. Bigelow is recorded as "farmer."

More 2011:
I am finding errors regarding Emma Bigelow, dau. of Thomas Allen &
Jane Wallace Bigelow. Her number is 16B2A.22. When I
interviewed older family members, I was given her name and told she
married a Frank Neer; which is reported in your great web site on
the Society.
Recently, I found a lot more information on Frank L. Neer and his
wife Emma. Frank was born 25 Sep 1858 in Ohio; whereas, Emma
Bigelow (if she exists) would have been born about 1828 -- far to old
to marry Frank Neer. In the 1850 census, no Emma is recorded in
the Thomas Allen Bigelow family in Genoa, DeKalb, IL. If
she exists she could have married an unknown husband, or died early,
or??
Frank L. Neer did marry Emma V. HOGEBOOM (not Bigelow). She
is the dau. of Jane Eliza Bigelow who married Joseph
Hogeboom. That may be the cause of the errors. Jane
Eliza is a dau. of Thomas Allen and Jane Bigelow, and it was their dau.
Emma V. who married Frank L. Neer.
The Neer's settled next to the Bigelow and Hogeboom families in North
Butte twp., Sutter, CA The Neer's are buried in the Pennington,
Sutter, CA cemetery.
Now, I question the source for there even being an Emma Bigelow born
between Douglas and Jane Eliza Bigelow. If she was born in 1828,
then the first three Bigelow children would have all been one year
apart in age, which is not common. If she was younger, she should
show up on the 1850 censes with all the other children. She
now seems to be a mixup with Emma V. Hogeboom, since that Emma did
marry Frank Neer, and his name was also incorrectly connected to an
Emma Bigelow who would have been 30 years older than Frank.
How best to handle this on the Society page for
16B2A.22?

"Bigelow Society Web page: 16B2A.2 Thomas Allen 6 BIGELOW, son of Gale
5 ( Jabez 4 , Gershom 3, Joshua2, John1) and Almy (GARDNER) BIGELOW,
was
born 18 December 1802 at New Lebanon, Columbia county, NY. He married,
on
22 January 1826, Emily Jane Wallace, who was born 27 April 1802 in
Massachusetts.
They lived at New Lebanon until early 1846, then moved to Genoa
township,
DeKalb county, IL, where they were enumerated in 1850 (where he is
incorrectly
recorded as "Alvin Bigalow"). Illinois Land Purchases shows Allen
Bigelow
purchased two 40 acre plots (80 acres) on 6 June and 27June1846 located
about 4 miles ESE of Genoa, IL. In 2008, the intersection of Derby Line
Rd. and Lincoln Rd. is the northern boundary and center of these two 40
acre parcels in two adjoining sections. An airplane landing strip and
pond
now covers the west side 40 acres with 40 acres on the east side of
Lincoln
Rd. being the other half of the Allen Bigelow farm from 1846 to 1853.
(See
MapQuest.com > aerial image for the intersection of these two roads;
it
is like driving there and seeing it today.) These land purchases appear
in
the U.S. Land Patents on 10Mar1848, so it can be years after purchase
before
the Land Patent is issued. In 1853 they made their way overland to
California
and settled in Butte (now Pennington), Sutter, CA. There Thomas
died
08 June 1879, and Jane Emily Wallace on 23 October 1879. Buried in Gridley, CA (below)
