16A43. Stephen Moses 5 BIGELOW, son of Moses 4 ( Ebenezer 3, Joshua2, John1) and Mary (HAMMOND) BIGELOW, was born 05 August 1764 at Watertown, Middlesex county, MA. As to his life and death, we have only the evidence submitted to G.B. Howe that certain men were sons of a Moses Bigelow, and grandsons of a Moses Bigelow. From this and from the content of the letters (see Howe's Bigelow Family of America, appendix), we infer that Moses 4 Bigelow the elder (see below) was killed or lost at the siege of Quebec, and that as a consequence his family was scattered, the son Stephen Moses being raised by a man surnamed Arnold in Providence, Rhode Island. Stephen Moses Bigelow subsequently moved to Vermont, and married a Phebe Wing. He possibly also spent some time in Canada, as he does not appear on any census of early U.S. (1790, 1800, 1810). We have no other facts, but at his death he was survived by the five sons listed below, one of whom was a correspondent of G.B. Howe:
Children of Stephen Moses and Phebe (Wing) Bigelow:16A43.1t Horace, b 20 May 1796 VT; d 30 Oct 1854 Berkshire, Franklin county, VT; m Sarah Wiltsie born in Canada (see below), and had at least 5 children.
16A43.2t Hardin, b ca 1801 VT; d 27 Nov 1850 San Francisco, CA of cholera; he settled early in upper NY, then in MI, two daughters being buried at Marengo, Calhoun co, MI and other references in that community show that he was in business there; at one time lived IL and served in Black Hawk War. Alleged to have mined in South America. In California Gold Rush he was early at Sacramento, and elected its first mayor, after directing that the town be sandbagged against flood, and levees built. He later put down a squatters' riot in the town. He left other issue besides his daughters buried in MI, whose tombstone refers to them as children of "Hardin and Thirza," but when he sold land in 1830's in NY, the deed was "Hardin and Cynthia"
16A43.3t Ward, b ca 1802?; in 1850 res Diana township, Lewis co, NY; was married to Sarah _____ ,and had at least 5 children.

and before 1866 settled in Big Rapids, where he had flouring and lumber
mills until his retirement; m (1) ca 1835 Eliza Davis, and (2) ca 1874

Its not clear, but I believe the website indicates that Moses-5
was killed at the siege of Quebec. Because the siege of Quebec
City during the French and Indian War took place in 1759,
Moses-5 whose birth date should be 1764 could not
have fought in the battle, which started 13 Sep 1759. It had to
be Moses-4, who was born about 1730 and would have
been the appropriate age to participate. This also
establishes an approximate death date of 1759 for him, and further
supports my suggestion that Moses-6 and Moses-5
should be the same person.

Your family records of Moses (5) Bigelow (16 A43) does not fit for the
children to be of the man. I am sure that it is just a small mistake
but the children as listed are of Moses born 1764? The Horace is my
line and his daughter was
my ggrandmother. She died in Berkshire, VT. and Horace died in 1877,
also
in Berkshire, VT. They are buried in the Berkshire Cemetery. Sarah
Thayer as listed is not a Thayer but is Sarah Wiltsie born in Canada.
The DAR, (we have a copy) lists her and Horace. My Grandfather was
named after Horace Bigelow
and can be found in the Hart Family History by Andrews on page 153 as
family
number 482. Horace Bigelows daughters name is Ann Maria. George Hart
and
Ann Maria Bigelow were married in Potsdam, St. Lawrence, NY 16 Sep.
1851.
