Hello Rod, I found your page and thought I would give you a little bit
of information that might help you in your research. The mother of
Artemus is Charlotte Bates, born around 1793. In the 1850 census, there
was a 14 year old Gilbert Bates residing with them... In the Cemetery
that Hopestill and Charlotte are buried, are the graves of Amanda Bates
Dunham and her husband... Amanda is the sister of Gilbert Bates...
Gilbert Bates is Sergeant Gilbert Henderson Bates who became a bit of a
self made celebrity after the civil war. Gilbert's father was a David
Bates who was an engineer, and Gilbert's Grandfather is David Stanhope
Bates, the famous engineer that worked on the Erie canal and other
projects in our country's history. David Stanhope Bates was born in
1777 and is believed to be Charlotte's brother. I know it needs to be
confirmed, but I though it might help to know this info. I am the
GGG-Grandson of Gilbert Bates. If I can help with any other info, feel
free to contact me. William Doran
